...Symbols like waving a white flag means to surrender or to give up. That is a universal to all people regardless of a language barrier. When I think of visual literacy I immediately think of what I see and how I interpret what I see. Adding visual literacy to business now mean interpreting what I see while engaging with others. After breaking down what I think visual literacy is I can draw a educated conclusion that I agree with the text book more than Brian Kennedy’s video. The text book states that “a group of vision related competencies a human being can develop by seeing, and at the same time, having and integrating other sensory experiences… to communicate with others… and comprehend and enjoy visual communication” Visual Literacy learning to see William Ryan Copyright © 2012, Bridgepoint Education, Inc. That definition seems to hit it right on the head whereas in Brian Kennedy video he explains visual literacy as “the ability to construct meaning from images”. Mr. Kennedy definition seems to be missing important aspects when used in a particular subject. Taking what you can see and not only get meaning but relate that meaning to the subject at hand with your peers would be a more complete definition. The text book definition would be more accurate in today’s world. Being able to comprehend which is to understand what you see and discuss your understanding with other’s for class, on any social media site can help you engage in an informative discussion. Visual Literacy and Impact of Multimedia

...Visual Literacy visual-literacy What is visual literacy? Visual literacy is something you make up, something you can imagine in your mind and put that imagination to paper. Visual literacy is information we can interpret from visual images such as presentations (or PowerPoint), pictures such as art, graffiti, collages, etc. As you can see above the image I’ve posted about visual literacy is only one of many types of examples of visual literacy. This is to make meaning of the information we see within the pictures that are the text base that are on the image. Learning to read visual images can help you both in your work and life, it makes it easier for us to know what is being said and done in an image. Visual Literacy can also represent your own company for example an advert you want to make to help sell a brand new product your company is hosting, you will use people, pictures and other ways to credit the product We need to learn how to identify, read, and understand images to become literate in visual language in order for us to communicate successfully. I recently came across a website called Wikipedia that said this about visual literacy ” Visual Literacy is not limited to modern mass media and new technologies” I wondered for hours why they said that, and came to this conclusion Visual Literacy isn’t something that is taken away but is taken by the imagination of people on how to communicate in many different ways whether they’re able to speak or not, visual...

Why Is Visual Literacy Important

...Why is Visual Literacy Important Visual literacy is the learned ability to interpret visual messages accurately and to create such messages. (Argerinou & Pettersson, 2011, p. 6) Children must be taught visual literacy in school to prepare them for the information age we now live in. Schools teach the meaning of words and very often ignore visual literacy all together. For our next generation of leaders to be successful in this age of over-information visual literacy has never been more important. We all are exposed to massive amount of visual stimuli on a daily basis. In order to not to get completely overwhelmed we must developed the skills to be selective about what we allow ourselves to process and what we just tune out. The two major requirements of visual literacy are sight and perception. This is rooted in any theory you read about. Brian Kennedy theory is that everything is an image. We use our mind eyes to interpret these images. To be able to do this successfully we need to be able to use our critical thinking skills. The average person does not see the majority of visuals that he is exposed to on a daily basis. This is necessary to weed out a lot to the stimuli in order to not become overwhelmed. It would be in everyone’s best interest to developed our critical thinking skills and see the beauty in the world on a daily basis. We can use visual literacy to help us enhance globally understanding. This is a great idea if all the visual stimuli that...

Visual Literacy in Business

...Visual Communication and Approaches Deondra Richardson CGD218: Visual Literacy in Business (BNC1111A) Mr. Tony Sgarlatti April 11, 2011 Visual Communication and Approaches “Visual communication is a central aspect of our lives, and much of this communication is done indirectly, through symbolic means: by words, signs, and symbols of all kinds” (Berger, 2008a, p.2). Utilizing communication is an important part of advertising or expressing ideas without actually saying them. I recently finished a visual project in which I was required to reflect on the effectiveness of visual communication using at least three different approaches to convey my message. The different approaches I used in my visual project to demonstrate the effectiveness of visual communication are as follows: images, typography, color, signs, and symbols. In this paper, I will explain why each approach will pose as an effective tool in communicating my message. In conclusion, I will also explain why I feel signs and symbols is the most effective approach in my visual project of effective visual communication. As the old saying goes, “a picture says a thousand words?” In my opinion, this phrase exemplifies the power of images. I believe this saying is true because images can be used to persuade and to perpetuate ideas that words alone cannot (Lester, 2006). We see images every day, and they often contain more information than we imagine. The world has become flooded with images: some selling...

The ability to understand visual literacy you must be able to see your world, but is it the ability to just see things around you the clear definition of visual literacy? Of course not, it is much more than just being able to see. We will review the International Visual Literacy Association (IVLA) definition versus the information provided in a video “TedTalk” by Brian Kennedy, director of the Hood Museum of Art at Dartmouth College, how visual literacy is a universal language and finally how it impacts communication and global understanding. The International Visual Literacy Association (IVLA) definition of what visual literacy is A group of vision-related competencies a human being can develop by seeing, and at the same time, having and integrating other sensory experiences. [These competencies] enable a visually literate person to discriminate and interpret the visible actions, objects, and symbols that he [or she] encounters . . . to communicate with others . . . and comprehend and enjoy visual communication. (International Visual Literacy Association (IVLA, n.d.) (Ryan, 2012). This definition is stating that one should see the object but be able to critically think about the object. By critically thinking about the object we can view the object; understand and interpret it. When we...

Sihite’s Family Literacy Practices

...the sustainable literacy mastery of one generation to the next generation. Literacy is really needed to speed up the development or the progress of a country especially in this era of globalization in which technology advance and rapid economic development requires everyone to be competent and to have good skills. Everyone should be literate and be able to read or write at least. In line of this, Hussain (2005) said: “Access to quality literacy learning opportunities and the development of literate environments are essential components of strategies for poverty reduction, equality, economic development and environmental protection, and for achieving democracy. Literacy is a fundamental human right and a prerequisite to the empowerment of the individual and development of society”. It is fully essential to social and human development in its ability to transform lives. For individuals, families, and societies alike, it is an instrument of empowerment to improve one’s health, one’s income, and one’s relationship with the world. Literacy education is one of important aspects which should be applied in order to foster an interest and latent talent in order to get that empowerment of the individual and development of society. ...concerns which is known to be an essential part of developing globally-competitive and productive citizens. To achieve this, one of the best ways to build a strong foundation of technological literacy is to implement the use of digital media in schools to assist the teaching-and-learning process. Technology in classroom serves as a great partner of teachers to deliver a complete package of standard teaching. Learning process equipped with various visual media incorporated in lessons are much likely to awaken the learners’ interests to get involved than that of dominated by traditional way of teaching in which the center of information source are the teachers themselves. Gone were the days where Filipino children read passages from the back of used calendars. Teachers are also challenged at the same time that since one of the goals is to produce learners who will be able to respond to the current demands of the market, they must be very careful in using technology in teaching and bring out the best of it and ensure that this technique will heighten the learners’ skills and abilities. Moreover, technology in classroom is as much helpful to learners. With this, the first graders in school become oriented at their young age of different forms in technology which include computers and visual media. As K-12 learners, it will also be a requirement for them since the workforce nowadays demands for an individual to be literate in computers and other technological tools for them to pass...

Musical Literacy

...Musical Literacy: The Stuff of Genius Keith Rulli COM 156 December 7, 2012 Karen Nowak Musical Literacy: The Stuff of Genius Literacy is the ability to read and write, which implies knowledgeability and capability of exercising one's ability through comprehension and expression. It is developed through learning and training in the intellectual and formal standards of a language. It is not a natural talent or innate capacity, therefore, it is not to be underestimated in importance. Standard, or formal English, differs from substandard, or informal English, as well as broken English and slang, because it is contrained by formal rules and elements. Language of a higher caliber is of greater worth because of its sophistication which breeds sophistication. People with a feebly sentimental attachment to their own nature and its affections may be complacently stifled from pursuing a sophisticated consciousness. Fluency and literacy are not the same. Fluency only requires a degree of understanding that gives one the ability to easily and readily express oneself. Often, illiterate or borderline illiterate individuals are able to speak and understand the English langauge in a basic way. People who speak the same language often speak different dialects identifiable by characteristic nuances. The concept of musical literacy is one that many people are unfamiliar with. Musical literacy is partially an understanding of the notation system that enables one to read notes...

Seeing Is Believing

...“Is seeing, Believing?” – Visual Literacy Understanding Visual concepts, globally 2014 Visual literacy is important to understand what you are seeing. As kids we watch and mimic people because visually we learn he best by watching others. In the video, Brian Kennedy defines visual literacy as the ability to construct meaning from images. The video helps provide more validation by saying, 90% of all the info we take in from the world is taken in visually. This is a huge number. In the video Kennedy said that we take in visuals faster than we do text. While the textbook defines visual literacy with more empathizes on all the senses working together to understand. The text states that more than one sense is needed to understand what you are seeing. So, jus sight along can't provide you with a complete understanding of what you are seeing. I believe that in both definitions there are valid points. Understand the thought that is seeing does not mean believing. So, if you see and smell it - that could be believing it. If you hear it and see it, that could be believing it too. Also, that construction meaning of what you see from images is the understanding of visual literacy. Both valid points. I tend to believe and relate more with Brian Kennedy. Beside the fact that the video was very good, I agree with this terminology and reasoning behind believing what he does. If I see an image, on a post card, that image does not have to be heard, or I don't have to use...
