...Tonya Butts Some of the various forms of visual entertainment media that has shaped American culture are television, movies, and social media. Television has played a role in bringing many people closer to local and world happenings. People can know what they might need to know about certain things that are going on in their neighborhood. They can also know what is happening in other parts of the country. Television also brought comedies and reflected attitudes about sitcom families, women’s roles, divorce, and parenthood. Movies continued to portray the same attitudes. Movies also have showed us bad influences such as murder, drugs, fighting, and drinking. Television has also showed us these things. Television has influenced our thinking in the way of commercials. Social media has the influence from advertising and other people’s opinions. These influences have had positive and negative effects. I think the influences had more negative effects than any positive ones. A few shows and movies still show family values and family oriented movies. These are the ones that have positive effects on people. There are so many more that shows more violence, alcohol, drugs, and all the bad things in the world. These negative things influence some people that watch these things all the time are influenced to do these negative actions. The negative things we see or read through social sites can influence us in bad ways. Some people can use the negativity to understand what...

...Visual media plays a big part in American culture. Television itself has made an impact on what we look at as right and wrong in our culture. As a small child I can recall watching programs such as, Roseanne, The Cosby’s, and Full House to name a few. These programs represented what family life was or could be like and they were models of what Americans do or should live like. Programs like Saved by the Bell, or 90210, surely influenced teen behavior and sparked fads and fashion. We primarily idolized these figures and television and it became very much a part of who we were, and are today. Television also impacts the way we get together as a family. Certain programs such as American Idol, or a sports program, are known to bring groups of people together, whether it’s a weekday night in front of the television rooting for the best singer, or sitting in a crowded bar or pub shouting out obscenities at the opposing team. Reality Television is becoming a widely accepted past-time, which is a big influence on our culture. Everyone has that famous person or celebrity whose style represents them, or who they struggle to be like. Reality television is an invasion in the lives of real people, and as Americans I feel that we are totally consumed with others people business. Reality TV is a first class ticket into other people’s business. The social influence of visual entertainment can be negative, but it can also be positive as well. You have certain programming aimed towards children...

...Visual entertainment media has shaped American culture and values in many ways. There are so many forms of entertainment nowadays that it has cause many of us including our children to forget what is more important. For example we now use the Internet to rely on so many things, like information. When at one point in time we would use books or news papers. Video games, Internet, cell phones and things like this have taken away from our values of taking time out to enjoy a book. The children of today won’t even take time out to play outside they are more concerned with playing their video games. There was a time where children played outside everyday and that was a form of exercise but now all they want to do is watch television, play games and be on the Internet and their cell phones. The social influences of the visual entertainment media have been more negative than positive. For example YouTube has millions of video up where most of them depict something of negativity or something of no substance. There are so many videos of people fighting than there are of someone speaking out to promote non violence. There are also sexually explicit videos where you see a person has millions of hits, but what you don’t see is anyone encouraging young girls not to post something of that nature for it will come back to haunt them. Also movies have become so much more violent these days that young people are easily influenced by them. I think it is up to us as parents to make sure we monitor...

...Influence of Visual Media Craig M. Desrosiers HUM/176 March 24, 2013 Christopher Theim Influence of Visual Media Visual media such as movies and television has played a part in the changes in American culture and by being the avenue by which the values, social issues, and cultural changes of the time could be expressed and either promoted or discouraged. The “Brady Bunch”, first airing in 1969, showed the life of a combined family dealing with everyday situations such as sibling rivalry, lying, and following rules. It was a show that showed what family life was all about and showed healthy lessons to its viewers in an attempt to showcase a model family. Another show that helped American children see the way family life was supposed to be was the 1982 television sit-com, “family Ties”. This show also demonstrated typical family issues and showed lessons to the viewer through the characters. Lessons learned were often life experience issues like honesty, trustworthiness, and being a good person. Both of these shows helped expand the belief of what a typical family should look and act like making both shapers of American culture and values. As a child I watched both of these shows and they reminded me of my life at home and I could relate with many of the lessons discussed in them. Although the long term view of television shows like these, and many others, displays how visual media relates to American culture and values, I do not believe the changes in our culture, and society...

...Influence of Visual Media Kimberly Malave Hum/176 Melissa Caldwell 11/8/14 • In what ways have various forms of visual entertainment media shaped American Culture and its values? Media has changed dramatically over the last century. And visual entertainment media has shaped American culture and values in many ways as well. In today’s society there are so many different kinds of entertainment media that it has caused us to forget about the more important values in life. For example, today we all rely on the internet for so many things from shopping, to paying bills, to social media and news updates. We no longer have to wait for our information to be released through the newspaper, or books. Game systems, internet, films, cell phones and more have taken away from our values of taking the time to actually enjoy a drama or comedy through reading, even looking for information. Back in the day children didn’t have TV’s, so they would spend a lot of their time outside playing and being active. In today’s younger generation, the children rather be in the house and play video games or watch shows on TV than go outside and play with friends. The social influences of visual entertainment media have been more negative than positive. For example, YouTube has millions of videos up but most of them are either something negative or something of no benefit. Most of those videos are either about...

...Effects of Visual Media Your Name HUM/176 June 2, 2013 Instructor’s Name Effects of Visual Media As film technology has advanced through the years of development to the media outlet it is today, films have shaped culture and attitudes through stories and other content. As more movies are produced, views and values of society continue to alter based on the images portrayed. These changes in society occur because moviegoers absorb the styles and attitudes of idolized characters from films. For example, in the late 1960s, several movies were released depicting rebellion and violence. Movies such as “The Wild Bunch” and “Bonnie and Clyde” let to more liberal attitudes toward social order as well as an acceptance of violence and sex on-screen (Lule, 2012). More films were produced to specifically shape the viewpoints of the audience once filmmakers took notice. The movie “Super-Size Me” is one example of a movie produced specifically to alter perceptions of society. Television provided a source of at home visual entertainment beginning in the 1950s. Initially, television was a family oriented activity with programming such as “Leave it to Beaver” featuring white families living in suburban communities with a focus on issues of family life but not on issues of society. These types of shows depicted the ideals of the time. As society events began to create stress in everyday lives during the 1960s, shows like “Bewitched” provided a world of fantasy and escape, but still...

...Influence of Visual Media Radio was the popular media until television became the leader in mass media. Television reached out to people in a visual and auditory sense. The influence of this visual entertainment coupled with major motion pictures shaped and influenced American culture in ways that are negative as well as positive. The positive aspects range from instantaneous world news coverage such as weather events to political wars. Sporting events or learning how to prepare a favorite meal is available through a television in a person’s home. Major motion pictures “the movies” brought big screen entertainment to people where they were able to escape reality of their own lives and get lost in the plot of a story shown on the big screen. Some of the television shows and the motion pictures have mirrored real life activities and at other times are fictitious or a combination of both. There is ample proof in society that media is responsible for generating negative feelings among its viewers. Children are especially vulnerable to the negative influence of violence or viewing alcohol use, and abuse in films. When people frequently view death, sex, rape, suicide, and murder, it is a negative influence, because there are images etched in their subconscious that can never be unviewed. The television shows cost money to produce and air time has to be bought to show the program on television. Commercials are sold in order to pay for the cost of the shows. The companies...

...Influence of Visual Media American culture and values have been influenced in many ways by visual entertainment media. Televisions, smart phones, computers, and gaming systems, are a part of almost everyone’s daily life. Although many people will deny it, many of people’s actions and beliefs are linked to what they are exposed to in their daily life. From fashion sense, to political views, to the cars we drive, our minds have been led that way with the help of entertainment media. Each time any form of entertainment media is accessed, American values are influenced. Through television, the younger generations of the world are being taught that it is acceptable to lie, cheat, steal, use vulgar language and behave inappropriately in public. Many people look up to the President of the United States, but how is one to explain their wrongdoings? President Clinton had an affair, but the media portrayed it as if it were no big deal. President Obama refused to produce his original birth certificate for Americans to see and again this was acceptable. Both of these leaders, that many Americans look up to, have shown that it is okay to lie, cheat and withhold information. As Americans, we see it as “if they can do it, so can we”. Another poor form of entertainment media is video games. Most of these games are full of violence, drugs and vulgar language. For example, in the game Grand Theft Auto, you are on a mission to steal cars, fight with others, and run from...

...Influence of Visual Media American Culture has been shaped and reshaped with visual entertainment media. The violence depicted is still the same as it was at the dawn of television. But we as a society have greatly changed in the standard we deem to be acceptable. Violence is easily viewed and visually accepted. Due to this modern age and how easy it is to view crime as it happens and eye witnesses thru cell phones and other devices that are commonly used and available everywhere by everyone. A good example would be a television shows from the 70s three’s company. This show was very edgy for its time it pushed the envelope for back then with its double meaning jokes and very sexually driven innuendos on every episode. Not to mention the Gay topic and the reasoning for living with two girls because the landlord wouldn’t allow one man to live with two women. These may be small things now looking back, but were really ahead of its time back then and was a sign of what was to come with the growing popularity of visual media and entertainment. Pushing the line and finding the next big thing in entertainment and news have always been the goal in the American culture. This new age is about who has the biggest news the best shows or the most groundbreaking. That’s what is and has shaped our American culture from visual entertainment and media. (Jacqueline L. Jennings, 2013) The social influences from these visual entertainment media seems to be mostly positive though in most instances...

...Influences of Visual Media Paper HUM/176 Professor Craig Bowler There are many forms of visual entertainment readily accessible to us; it has become the primary source of entertainment. Visual entertainment only has not helped shape American culture but also its values. Visual entertainment comes in many forms; whether it is reading a newspaper, magazines, or just watching television. Visual media has many numerous advantages as well as some disadvantages. Advisements are used to target individuals that find their product appealing. This compels viewers to buy the latest technology gadget or to wear the latest fashion clothes. Media has also changed the way we communicate and this has improved our culture in many ways. For example, in the recent years it has been possible to connect on real time with someone across the world through a computer. Now we are able to connect with people through a simple device like the IPhone 4S. The IPhone 4S lets a person talk through face time and allows them to see each other. Visual media has also made a huge impact on young children and teenagers. With all the new artists coming out changing the music and media culture the younger generation is looking up to them more each day. The younger generations view these artists as role models and want to be exactly like them. The music industry has changed media forever. Artists have introduced us to many different cultures...

It is stated by the Department of Education that children/young adults watch as much as 4-5 hours of TV a day; Influencing their lives in not such a good way. They have less time to interact with others resulting in poor social skills. It also has introduced many different trains of thought into the houses of America, which can be a problem because some TV channels negatively influence the youth when drugs, sex, and violence are shown. The television media has changed the mind of many adults too. We are...

...Influence of Visual Media Paper Course: HUM/176 December 08, 2013 Jonathan Langdon Culture and visual entertainment media have an interrelationship with each other such as film and television. With the years going by, more television shows and movies have been constructed which has become in my opinion a reflection of our cultural times. Society and our people can see visual instead of having to read to learn which can give them a distinctive perspective that they may not have thought of on their own. As people view the visual entertainment they are being influenced from the way celebrities act, dress, talk, and so forth.. American culture has been shaped and influence by visual entertainment in so many ways. Entertainment has brought various benefits and challenges to American culture and changed how our people and society communicates. For most people TV is the primary source of entertainment back then and most likely today since technology has been updated, electronic devices such as iPads, iPods, tablets, and cell phones have become society’s primary source of entertainment. Television has also helped to establish our culture by making an impact on newspaper's and magazine's design and content and books. Sports have also made an impact on our culture. For example when it’s close to Super Bowl my family and I plan a big family brunch or meet up at the bar for a couple drinks. Or whomever out of my siblings that wants to...

...between culture and the visual entertainment media. I believe that there have been many television shows and movies that have displayed the culture of times in them. People have been influenced by these movies and television shows because some individuals can really relate to the lifestyles or actions of the people in these movies or shows. Especially with videos out there for learning things, I think that can really help with teaching people rather than just trying to get them to read materials to learn. It gives a different view of the materials and what is supposed to be learned. I think that these different forms of visual entertainment media have shaped American culture and its values by influencing people to act differently because of what they see on television or in movies. I believe that celebrities can have a large impact on how people say and do things. For example, Marilyn Monroe was a huge symbol in the past. She was someone who a lot of women admired and tried to be like. I believe that the social influences of the visual entertainment media are mostly positive because it is not always a bad thing to want to better yourself to be like someone in movies or television. Honestly, I think some people can learn a lot from visual media because if they just moved to America or where ever, they can watch movies and television to get an idea of how things are. That is just one example, there are just so many more. In conclusion, visual media does influence social behavior...

...Influence of Visual Media Paper By: Marco Contreras There is a strong link, or interrelationship, between culture and visual entertainment media. Visual entertainment media has been used to depict, and to some extent, influence society and culture. Everything we watch on television, film and even digital gaming has influenced us in one way or another. We can easily see an array of examples of these influences. For instance, Marilyn Monroe was considered a huge “sex symbol.” Visual media created this image of her as the “ideal woman,” thus many other women at the time began to imitate her and her style. Another example is the singer and actress Jennifer Lopez. At one point in time, being “anorexic skinny” was what every woman aspired to be. This changed thanks to the exposure of Jennifer Lopez through visual entertainment media. Her “curvy” body became the “ideal” much like Marilyn Monroe was during her time. As such, many women began to change their concept of what is “sexy” or the “ideal woman.” Unfortunately, not all visual entertainment media’s influence on society has been positive. There have been saddening examples, such as the appearance of the television show “Sixteen and Pregnant.” Instead of learning from the show, young teenage girls began to imitate this behavior. Next thing we know, there was a wave of teenage girls getting pregnant across the country. We see all these music video where sex, drugs, and alcohol are glamorized. Kids think that...

...The three significant forms of visual entertainment media that have shaped our culture are movies, television and video games. These three have been a staple or lifestyle in almost every American household. Movies have been around since the early twentieth century. At that time it was the most popular form of entertainment. This continued until the fifties when television was starting to make its place in American homes. As television sets became more popular and more affordable, movie theaters started to feel the impact, with the loss of patrons. In order to compete against television, movie producers had to become more creative. As technology started to advance, many producers started using this as a method to attract more people and stem the tide of lost revenue. As production costs continued to rise, a majority of film companies stopped making so many low budget films. It seems that each producer wanted to create an epoch production, which in general was quite expensive. This allowed their latest efforts to spend more time in development. Television was founded around 1920. It wasn’t until after world war two that it gained acceptance. Television grew dramatically in the fifties as both availability and affordability became commonplace. Color television became the boon of the sixties, although in the fifties certain programs and movies were developed in color. The seventies and eighties saw the development of both cable and satellite transmission...
