Assignment I

Vitreon Corporation: The Hyalite Project 9-607-031

This case brings forth issues about process yields and productivity. Productivity is simply a measure of how much output(s) one gets out of given input(s). You may find more information on how to measure and use productivity in your mandatory and recommended textbooks.

To prepare for the case, consider the following assignments.

Q1. What is the crisis at Vitreon? What are the root causes of this crisis?

The main problem at Vitreon is the inefficiency of Hyalite manufacturing process. After 5 years they couldn’t be able to meet the demand because of their inefficient production at Fontana plant.
One of the root causes is the Fontana plant organization. According to the team the organization of the plant has some problems. Moreover, the plant manager, MacIntosh, is stubborn about not cooperating with M&E Project. That also causes problems too.
Secondly, the disagreement between Andrew and MacIntosh causes problem remain unsolved.
Another cause is the misallocating of engineering resources among various Vitreon’s plants. There had been a change between plants and some experts moved from Fontana plant to Spoken plant. Hence, there is a lack of experience on people work in Fontana plant.

Q2. As Michael Andrews, how would you resolve this crisis?

First, I would start with changing the organization including the plant manager. Since MacIntosh is conservative and stubborn about his ideas it would be hard to change his mind. Hence I would first start with replacing MacIntosh with an experienced expert from the Fontana plant. Then I would prefer to re-organize the plant with the new manager.
Moreover, I may suggest to the board that they need to bring more experienced staff from the other plants. It will be helpful at least for education the unexperienced staff.
