...Climate change is one of the most critical global challenges of our times. Recent events have emphatically demonstrated our growing vulnerability to climate change. Climate change impacts will range from affecting agriculture - further endangering food security - to sea-level rise and the accelerated erosion of coastal zones, increasing intensity of natural disasters, species extinction, and the spread of vector-borne diseases. [1] This issue is of immense importance for every global citizen. That is why it requires an initiative against it globally. Fortunately, a few of the global initiatives to prevent climate change are started by various sectors. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and enhances political attention and action through World Environment Day, commemorated each year on 5th June. The World Environment Day slogan for 2008 is " Kick the Habit! Towards a Low Carbon Economy". Recognizing that climate change is becoming the defining issue of our era, UNEP is asking countries, companies, and communities to focus on greenhouse gas emissions and how to reduce them. The World Environment Day will highlight resources and initiatives that promote low carbon economies and lifestyles, such as improved energy efficiency, alternative energy sources, forest conservation, and eco-friendly consumption. [2] In 2007, The World Environment Day slogan selected was " Melting Ice - a...

Social Media

...The Media and its Social Responsibility Media empowerment is a sign of true democracy, a medium to communicate with the youth and the entire world. Media definitely has a responsibility on its shoulders, which is to guide the people. People have blind faith in the media and they are convinced that what they hear or what the media has declared is correct. But have we ever deliberated over the fact that media can also be selfish? The truth is that in this competitive world – the media is also a victim. The media has exposed our very own celebrities whom we normally idolise. Thanks to the media, we got the true picture of these celebrities who have shamelessly indulged in wrong doings. If this be true, then why do we blame the media for interfering in their lives? It is their duty to expose the people. Once a person is a celebrity, his life or his actions definitely make the news, then why do they forever crib and blame the media? The Casting Couch is a ubiquitous phenomenon in many industries. As an average reader, we may already know that it exists in the film industry. If you ever had any doubts after all those newspaper articles, gossip magazine stories during the last couple of decades, which featured the infamous casting couch – India TV and Suhaib Ilyasi have definitely convinced the public that it is indeed in existence. Thanks to the media, we now know that there exists an industry where you have beautiful people, aggressive bosses and ambitious new entrants – yes, the...

Smartix Evaluation

...Smartix Case HBS Smartix 1. Imagine that you are Vivek Khuller. Should you accept the offer from MSG? I don’t believe that I would take the offer from MSG. Here’s the problem with not taking the deal: Accel is relying on the MSG deal far greater than anticipated, and the deal with Accel has a high probability of falling through once it is discovered MSG may not be participating in the way Accel is anticipating. The other issue at hand is that without the Accel deal, Smartix is nearly out of time and the funds required to continue aggressively pursuing the project. An alternative for Smartix in this situation is to scale it back and seek out a slightly smaller deal. They have the capacity to do so and it seems that they were aiming rather ambitiously with MSG. If they wanted to reassess their end game and dial it down some, they have the opportunity to connect with a slightly smaller venue or company and they have a short amount of time to do so. Another alternative to accepting the MSG deal is for the founders to gain outside employment in an effort to sustain themselves while they regroup Smartix to succeed under their terms. They all know that the last thing they want to do after all their hard work is become MSG employees. In the end, don’t accept a subpar deal if you know your venture is worth more. 2. Should Vivek have tried to start this venture without co-founders? Could he have been a solo founder? While not doubting his competence or his ability to...

Smartix: Swinging for the Fences

...Question 1: Imagine you are Vivek Khuller. Should you accept the offer from MSG? From my point of view, I would not accept MSG’s offer. Instead, I would make a counter offer. The main reason is that MSG didn’t like the deal and proposed a very different deal, which basically wants to control the company and hire all the founders as its employees. And as a founder, I would be very uncomfortable with MSG trying to wrest control from me. In other words, at this stage, I prefer control over wealth. From the founder’s viewpoint, all of them have a promising future following HBS and working for MSG as their fulltime employee would mean that they would be settling for much less as compared to what they would get otherwise. Also, accepting MSG offer would mean that Smartix will lose the opportunity to shape the culture of their startup, establish their version of fairness and reward philosophy in the company. If they had to work for an organization, why would they settle for MSG, wouldn’t they aim for something more financially rewarding? The MSG offer itself lends to what Smartix can expect in the future from MSG. MSG potentially could hijack the idea, make it a proprietary preventing Smartix from implementing elsewhere, seriously limiting the ability to Smartix team to reap rich dividends later. Moreover, MSG didn’t like the idea of VC, as MSG considered VC couldn’t bring any value other than money on the table. MSG only cared about minimizing the risks instead of thinking about...

Distant Dream

...moment he said Go, Raja started his search, completely lost in his dream, walking miles after miles; touching each stone, each pebble on his way, waiting for it to turn to gold. Days, months and then years passed, the mission still unaccomplished, but raja did not stop. Slowly the winds of time started to show up on Raja’s health, even with his deteriorating health and age, he went on and on. One day a small boy named “Vivek” saw him and pondered. Looking at the boy starring at him, Raja’s thoughts ran a flash back; his childhood, his family and everything he had forgone for his dream came in front of his eyes and tears rolled down and today his sole companion was his iron stick. He called upon Vivek and asked what was so amusing seeing him? Vivek instantly replied “Uncle what are you doing with your stick; touching the ground and moving forward? If you are searching something then I can help”. Raja knew that no one except himself could help him and so with a distressed heart he said, “I am waiting for the stick to turn Golden; only then will I find my thing”. Vivek in sheer amusement replied “It’s already...

...For the exclusive use of V. Veeraiah, 2016. 9-316-101 NOVEMBER 1, 2015 YOUNGME MOON Uber: Changing the Way the World Moves Uber is evolving the way the world moves. By seamlessly connecting riders to drivers through our apps, we make cities more accessible, opening up more possibilities for riders and more business for drivers. From our founding in 2009 to our launches in hundreds of cities today, Uber’s rapidly expanding global presence continues to bring people and their cities closer. — From the Uber website, November 2015 In late 2015, Uber was among the most high-profile new companies of its generation. Founded just six years ago, the company connected passengers to drivers at an unprecedented scale, using point-topoint software enabled by smartphone technology. Customers raved about Uber’s reliability and convenience. The breathtaking efficiency of its value proposition had fueled astonishing growth: It was now said to be booking 2 million1 rides a day, and although it did not report revenues as a private company, analysts estimated Uber’s net commission from drivers would come in between $1.5 billion and $2 billion2 in 2015. But if there was an adage about disruptive technology companies—”move fast and break things”— few companies embodied this adage better than Uber. Not only did the company endure frequent customer criticisms about its surge pricing policy, Uber was constantly battling government regulators, taxi companies, and critics who charged...

Why is it important to focus on motivating employees who survive a layoff? Most companies focus on layoff processes, but they should take more in consideration the layoff survivors who in fact experience more anxiety and tension. After the layoff, the survivors are the ones who “suffer” more. Their workload becomes heavy and as a result their stress levels are increased. It is important to focus on motivating the employees who survive a layoff because after that, they feel a lack of security on their job, due to the fact they don’t know when it will be their turn. Motivating surviving people reduces the negative feeling they experience during this layoff event, and the negative consequences. This is what company should do, if it wants to develop the organization during...
