Complaint of a Lowell Factory Female Worker (1845)

Source: Factory Tracts Number One. Factory Life As It Is (Lowell, 1845). Voices of Freedom, Vol. I, 3rd Ed., by Eric Foner.
The early industrial revolution centered on factories producing cotton textiles with water-powered spinning and weaving machinery. In the 1820s, a group of merchants created a new factory town near Boston, incorporated as the city of Lowell in 1836. Here, they built a group of modern textile factories that brought together all phases of production from the spinning of thread to the weaving and finishing of cloth. By 1850, Lowell’s fifty-two mills employed more than 10,000 workers.
At Lowell, young unmarried women from Yankee farm families dominated the workforce that tended the spinning machines. Competition among the mills led to a deterioration in working conditions and, beginning in the 1830s, protests among the workers. They engaged in strikes or “turn-out,” and petitioned the legislature to limit their hours of labor. Founded in 1845, the Lowell Female Labor Reform Association published a series of Factory Tracts to expose conditions in the mills. Frequently, as in this account by an unnamed worker, they drew an analogy between their conditions and those of southern slaves.
Reading Questions: 1. Why does the female factory worker compare her conditions with those of slaves? 2. Why does she doubt the sincerity of the Christian beliefs of the factory owners?
Philanthropists of the nineteenth century! – shall not the operatives of our country be permitted to speak for themselves? Shall they be compelled to listen in silence to [those] who speak for gain, and are the mere echo of the will of the corporations? Shall the worthy laborer be awed into silence by wealth and power, and for fear of being deprived of the means of procuring his daily bread? Shall tyranny and cruel

The Perfect Voice

...The Perfect Voice and Talking Proper Rough Draft Is it safe to say that your accent is a part of you? By trying to change or reduce your accent, are you consequently changing who you are? Our voices change all the time throughout our lifetime anyway. Who cares if it changed intentionally or naturally? Carl Elliot in “The Perfect Voice” and Lynda Mugglestone in “Talking Proper” both speak about accents. Although they both explain the effect of accents on class and social status, it is safe to say their perspectives are not so similar. By examining both articles, we are able to get a clearer view on what exactly the authors want to convey in their writings. It is very clear that both Elliot and Mugglestone believe that accent has an effect on class and social status. In his article, Elliot provides several examples to show this idea. Even during his own childhood, while watching other southerners on TV, he realized something. These people sounded like hicks just because of the way they spoke. They had a certain accent that made it hard for anyone to take them seriously. I9t is because of this social pressure that people were willing to go to “the Perfect Voice” clinic and spend $45 an hour to “reduce” their accents. You identify with your accent, so by changing it you are changing the way others think about you. An example that Elliot gives is of a man from Pennsylvania who was running for public office and wanted to reduce his northern accent in order to improve his chances...

Distinctive Voices

...“Distinctive voices in texts present to us thought-provoking ideas about the world” Ideas about the world can often be thought provoking and challenge our initial views through distinctive and unique voices that are presented to us throughout texts. This notion is evident within “summer of the Seventeenth Doll” directed by Ray Lawler, which provokes ideas about the world, influenced by unique characterisation that portrays the role of Men and Women in Australia during the 1950’s. Similarly, the ABC’s television episode, “Stand Up” in the series ‘Redfern Now’ aims to capture and recreate the diverse and changing nature of the Australian Voice. Significant voices are evident in both of these texts as they force the reader to adopt stimulating ideas regarding our beliefs on the current world. The Doll demonstrates a range of distinctive voices that confronts the reader with thought provoking ideas in regards to the roles of men and women in society. Through the distinctly gendered voice of the character Roo, Lawler exposes his proud and dismissive approach in order to protect his masculinity. The Australian slang used in the line “I won’t bludge off you” demonstrates Roo’s defiant refusal to accept money off his partner Olive. Traditionally, it is a male’s duty to be the financial provider therefore if he was to depend on Olive it would be seen as emasculating. This expresses Roo’s adherence to the social expectations of men within a patriarchal society, which ultimately...

Daily Goal: Practice the correct breathe way and try to find a balanced, free, and flexible singing posture as Emily said in the class, and also do some warm up. In the first voice class, I learnt that how to breathe in a right way. I not only need to inhale quickly and exhale slowly when I sing a song, but I also need to maintain right posture. Emily taught me that when I inhaling or exhaling, I both need to release my shoulder and muscle. When I practice the inhaling, I try to only to mouth to inhale. I also practice to explore the sensation that let the air fall lower than my belly button. Then let the breath fall in faster. After that I felt that my abdomen and lower back expand. When I practice the exhaling, I felt that it is more difficult to expand my belly than inhaling. I have to control my exhalation and have a sustained and smooth exhalation. I want to develop good posture while I breathe. A balanced, free, and flexible posture is fundamental to efficient vocal production and lovely voice quality. Emily taught me that when my body is aligned correctly, taking and using an efficient breath is easier. So I practice the...

Artist Voice

...What do you think an artist’s voice is? An artist voice refers to a person’s unique style. If an artist have a strong voice people would be able to identify their work easily; it could take years to develop a strong voice but with some people it comes nature. We will find that some artist has similar themes, but if we study them closely we can find the unique differences. My idea about an artist’s voice is that they express themselves by their beliefs, life experiences, and their personality. Communication with God has been a main subject for art in many cultures. For instances, I have heard that conceptual artist link their work to traditions. Some artist drew icons, which were believed to be able to talk to God. Sound Voice

...THE SOUND VOICE © Shelagh Davies, M.Sc, S-LP(C) SOUND ADVICE Your guide to a strong, clear, easy voice 1. KEEP THE LARYNX HYDRATED To vibrate easily and resist injury, the vocal folds need to be kept moist, both internally and externally. Dry air, mouth breathing, smoking and certain drying medications all dry the vocal folds externally, while drinking too much caffeine or alcohol and not drinking enough water dries them internally. To make sure your vocal folds are well hydrated: DRINK: 8 to 10 glasses/day of non-caffeinated, non-alcoholic liquids. Drink more in hot weather and if you are exercising or using your voice a lot. Drink water: it’s the easiest and it’s what your system needs. How can you tell if you are drinking enough water? Follow the dieticians’ advice to “pee pale”. Check your urine – if it is pale yellow, you are well hydrated; if it is dark yellow and concentrated, reach for the water bottle. 8 - 10 cups daily STEAM: Breathing humidified air rehydrates the vocal folds from the outside. It can be useful if: • you have an upper respiratory infection • your throat feels tired or sore • you have been doing a lot of talking or singing. (We automatically breathe through the mouth and that dries out the vocal folds.) • you are in a dry environment, like an airplane or Saskatchewan. Steam for 5 to 10 minutes, twice a day. • Take a hot shower or bath • Put your face over a bowl of hot water and drape a towel over your head (you get a facial at the...

Facial and Voice Attractiveness

...Introduction Voice is produced by breath, vibrating the vocal folds in the larynx. It is one of the most important components of a person’s identity. Every person has different voice quality. As defined by Trask(1996), voice quality is the characteristic auditory coloring of an individual's voice, derived from a variety of laryngeal and supra laryngeal features and running continuously through the individual's speech. The natural and distinctive tone of speech sounds produced by a particular person yields a particular voice. Various studies said that voice gives clues to physical characteristics and listeners might be better at relating the two traits than they think they are. A 2002 study showed that people are able to match a speaker’s voice with a photograph over 75 percent of the time and that those people with symmetrical traits (a sign of genetic fitness) were rated as having more attractive voices. Research has also shown that listeners can detect people’s socioeconomic status, personality, and emotional/mental state from their voice, and that they can estimate age, height, and weight about as accurately from voice clips as they can from photographs. Chris Brooke and Markus Koppensteiner (2015) studied on The sound of beauty: Men can tell if a woman is attractive simply by listening to her voice. Researchers photographed the faces and recorded the voices of 42 women with an average age of 24. They found out that those who are rated highly for looks often scored...

Thomas Lux's Voice

...The word “voice” was originally defined as an utterance from the human mouth. Thomas Lux’s, “The Voice You Hear When You Read Silently” sheds a new light upon this simple word. Lux’s description of “voice” is entirely different from the original definition. Instead of this voice escaping the human mouth, it is “caught in the dark cathedral/of your skull” (Lux 11-12). He describes it as inward, unique, and silent to all people except the individual “reading silently”. Throughout this poem, Lux expands and shares his fascinating realization of the inward voice. By using repetition and flowing structure sprinkled with vivid imagery, this poem conveys its message thoroughly and gives the reader a component to add to his unique individuality....

Direct Employee Voice Analysis

...Employee voice can take place either directly between employees and management such as employee involvement programs or indirectly through worker representations (Kim, MacDuffle, Pil, 2010). Direct employee voice refers to the degree to which individual employees or groups of employees directly influence key local establishment level decisions that affect their day-to-day work (Kim, MacDuffle, Pil, 2010). Indirect forms of employee voice exert influence on issues affecting employees and their work by using employee representatives such as unions, joint labor-management consultation committees, and employee representation. These indirect arrangements differ from direct employee involvement in how employee influence is expressed alongside the...

Social Roles and Identities Determine Intelligibility and Voice

...Social Roles and Identities Determine Intelligibility and Voice One can only wonder how many times a person is misinterpreted, misunderstood, and misrepresented during their lifetime. Usually this has to do with a lack in verbal communication. However, in this essay, we will see how social roles and identities determine the intelligibility and voice of a speaker and thus directly affect whether the intended message is received accurately or not. Drawing from several academic sources, we will see how it is possible and even a common occurrence to be misrepresented due to one’s social role or identity as it biases people about the content of one’s speaking even before the speaking has begun. Before we see how intelligibility and voice are affected by social roles and identities, it is important to define them. Intelligibility is defined as simply the ability to be understood, and voice is simply the perceived content of a message that a person is communicating. These two terms, are very much related and have a lot to do with how the message of what is being communicated is received. If a message is conveyed with a high level of intelligibility and an unbiased, clear voice, then the content is understood according to how the speaker intended it. This however is not often the case as social roles and identities often manipulate and alter the intelligibility and voice of a message. Social roles, i.e., the set of norms that people are expected to follow given their...

Voice vs. Data

...Cell phones are both voice and data. Voice was the first initiative use for the phone. Then after they have noticed that the cell phone could transfer data, they decided to push the data limitations. That is how we got to 4g today. A landline is voice without a modem. The landline cannot transfer data unless it has a converter called a modem. When this modem is applied the landline then could connect to a computer and transfer data. Sms/text messaging is definitely just data. There is no voice involved in those programs. Texting is the same as typing and is delivered like a message from an email. Sms is correlated with chat online which is a data transfer. Fax machines are considered voice/data. With this I do get confused. On some fax machines you talk on them, while others are more like computers. Most fax machines are connected to the landline. Pagers are data, there is not talking into them. And you can only receive data, and maybe send one back. Some pagers are considered sms/text messengers, with that in mine; it definitely reassures me that it is a data. VoIP is data. You ask me how I know. I say because of the cord that it has to go through. It would most likely go through a cat 5. VoIP is an online phone service. Anything online is considered data regardless of the voice that you get to input into it. Skype and face time are both voice and data. It really depends I guess where you Skype from or with what. Cell phones are both data and voice. So what is Skype…...

...business on the telephone lines it will go to the Telco’s switch in the area or to a digital concentrator box. Here your voice is digitized into 8,000 samples per second and 8-bit resolution before being transmitted onto its destination. 3. SMS/Text Messaging uses data networks also. This would seem natural since most cell phones use data networks and SMS/Text Messages are sent from cell phones. The way it works is because cell phones are always sending and receiving information, even when they are not in use. This is so the phone is constantly telling towers where it is so when a message is sent to a particular number the message can find its intended recipient. 4. Not surprisingly, Fax Machines use a data network to send information. This is done by digitizing an image. I say image because even if it is a text document it is still taking a picture of the document and transmitting it to the recipient. It is divided into a grid of dots and each dot would either be “on” or “off” using a 1 or 0. 5. Pagers use a data network also. Pagers are used to send messages and are sent from either a phone line or through email. There is not the option to send any type of document and/or voice communication and therefore a voice network would not be used. 6. VoIP also uses a data network to transmit information across the network. This is done by taking an analog voice call and converting into packets of data. The packets then travel like any other type of data over the public internet...
