...VOLLEYBALL A. History * The origins * William G. Morgan (1870-1942), who was born in the State of New York, has gone down in history as the inventor of the game of volleyball, to which he originally gave the name "Mintonette". * The young Morgan carried out his undergraduate studies at the Springfield College of the YMCA (Young Men's Christian Association) where he met James Naismith who, in 1891, had invented basketball. After graduating, Morgan spent his first year at the Auburn (Maine) YMCA after which, during the summer of 1895, he moved to the YMCA at Holyoke (Massachusetts) where he became director of physical education. In this role he had the opportunity to establish, develop and direct a vast programme of exercises and sport classes for male adults. * His leadership was enthusiastically accepted, and his classes grew in numbers. He came to realise that he needed a certain type of competitive recreational game in order to vary his programme. Basketball, a sport that was beginning to develop, seemed to suit young people, but it was necessary to find a less violent and less intense alternative for the older members. * At that time Morgan knew of no similar game to volleyball which could guide him; he developed it from his own sports training methods and his practical experience in the YMCA gymnasium. Describing his first experiments he said, "In search of an appropriate game, tennis occurred to me, but this required rackets, balls...

...Nicole Myhre Callenbach.2 Question #2 A Reader Response I think Callenbach’s ideas of integrating sex and aggression is interesting. The whole idea of the war games is kind of interesting I think. It makes sense and it doesn’t. The Ecotopians hold these games to so that men can get rid of their aggressions. The Ecotopians believe that men are having these biological desires to be aggressive. The war games are so that men can let these aggressions out. Some men die in the War Games. It kind of reminds me of the Hunger Games except it is just men. The Ecotopians also believe that if these aggressions that men have deep down aren’t able to be let out they will result in things such as war. For that reason, the Ecotopians believe they should take the risk of the War Games, so that they won’t have to deal with an outbreak of war. What doesn’t make sense is that some men die in the War Games, so isn’t that kind of the same idea as war anyways? The book basically portrays women as sluts and political and they portray men as fighting murderers. The idea is supposed to be equality and at the same time this book portrays it as inequality in so many ways. I don’t really think that the War Games make Ecotopia more civilized. I don’t really think war and killing people really has anything to do with being civilized. I think it relates to how the real world is, but I don’t think that in a so-called “perfect world” people would be killing each other. If you were to look...

...On September 2, 2017 I watched my very first University of Minnesota Volleyball game. This was our second home game, and I was extremely excited to see how the girl’s were going to play this night. With a group of friends, together we planned meeting up at Centennial Hall before going to the Sports Pavilion to cheer on the Volleyball team. On our way towards the Sport Pavilion, we accidentally grouped up with a bunch of other U of M students who was going to watch the game, as well. When arriving, I noticed what seemed to be a extremely long line coming from inside the door leading into the parking lot. Everybody coming from different directions trying to get inside to see this game made me realize how well the students, and the people...

...Hand signal in volleyball Jason caliz IV-Galilei Hand Signals in Volleyball Referees use several hand signals during a volleyball game. The referee blows the whistle to signal the start and end of each play. The hand signals are given by the referee who first signals the fault and then indicates which team has won the point. A point is indicated by one finger at the side of the court to indicate the winner of the rally. Ball in bounds is meant to show the point of the court where the ball landed and is indicated by pointing one arm and hand toward the floor. If a ball is out of bounds or went outside the antenna, the referee will raise his forearms vertically and palm facing inwards. A carry is when the ball had too much contact time with the players hand and is indicated by holding hand horizontal with the palm facing upwards. A double hit is indicated by two fingers showing that the player contacted the ball twice. Begin service is meant to indicate that the server is now allowed to serve, which can be shown by holding the hand high in the air with the palm in the direction of the team serving the ball. A net violation is meant to show that there was a contact with the net. This can be shown by placing a hand over the net, ensuring that the palm is facing down. Volleyball Terms Player, coaches and referees should know certain volleyball terms. These basic volleyball terms include an ace, which is a serve that makes a direct point and a kill occurs when...

...I miss the feeling of accomplishment when I get an amazing dig and the rush of being on the court with my teammates. I miss the proud moments of beating the teams we didn’t think we could, and coming back from being down by so much, just by working together as a team. Volleyball was my passion— I loved playing it; even though I was small for my age compared to all of my other friends who played, I still worked twice as hard to prove to myself and my teammates that I had some skill. I had played on my middle school team in seventh and eighth grade, but I desperately wanted to play in high school. By the time the summer before my freshman year rolled around, I only had 3 months until high school try outs, which was a team I deeply wanted to be...

...At the initial stages of my participation, I was overwhelmed both by the fact that I was new to the team and also that, it had been years since I played volleyball. I was in a pretty bad shape. From relevant previous experience, I knew I had to be very careful and tactical in play to avoid injuries and complete breakdown. I played it safe and cautiously because I did not want to truncate or miss any minute of the fieldwork. With time, I got better conditioned, and now advanced to become an active participant. Active Participation Being an active player enabled me to be totally immersed in the volleyball team, have a better understanding of the observations made and why participants behaved the way they did and how these factors influenced...
