INTRODUCTION
I. I’m sure that just about everyone in this room has something they are passionate about. Mine just so happens to be the sport volleyball.
II. I have played volleyball since the fifth grade and even joined a travel volleyball team upon entering high school.
III. Sadly, I was unable to continue my volleyball career into the collegiate level, but I have joined an intramural team to keep up with my passion.

The name of the game was changed in 1896 when a bystander observed that the hits of the players were almost more of volleys, and perhaps volleyball would be a better fitting name.
1. Volleyball was made by the YMCA, or young men’s Christian association, as a more relaxed sport that the elders could enjoy without requiring as much physical contact. As stated by volleyball.org, it was intended to blend elements of basketball, tennis, handball, and baseball.

II. The definition of volleyball from volleyball1on1.com states that volleyball is a sport that consists of two teams of six players competing over a net to try to score points by landing the ball on the opposition’s court under a set of rules.

III. The game is still continuing to evolve today, and the most recent changes to the game have been as recently as 2008.
A. Volleyball has evolved from your standard six person game, to now there are even four person teams, and two person teams; two person teams are generally beach volleyball teams. There are even sitting teams, so that those who are disabled are still allowed to play the game.
B. The most recent changes were changes made to the rules. In 2008, the system of scoring was changed in NCAA, or national collegiate athletic association, play for women. The change now required that to win any of the first four sets, a team would have to score a minimum of 25 points to win the game. In the fifth set, the team would have to score a minimum of 15 points to win the game. Also in 2008, the term for a game of volleyball was changed to a set of volleyball.
C. Volleyball has been played over the past 100+ years, both indoors and outdoors, both recreationally and competitively. It is a very dynamic sport that has changed and grown so large that it has spread worldwide.
