Sports are enjoyed by everyone all around the world. Volleyball is one of these sports that people love to watch. Volleyball often exerts qualities such as, quickness, timing, reflexes and hand-eye coordination. The article talks about two girls, Katie George and Emily Podschweit, who take volleyball very seriously. They both have a single driving force in their life: volleyball fever.
In this article, Katie George is a seventeen year old recruit from the University of Louisville, 5’10” senior setter for Assumption in Louisville, Ky., and three-time MVP in a trio of 2011 events, had her tonsils removed in July. Soon after the surgery, Katie’s life suddenly turned upside down as the doctors discovered a blood clot in her left lung and told her that she was not allowed to play volleyball. The doctors told her that she couldn’t even finish her final high school season. Despite all of her troubles, she decided to play the tournaments anyway, even if this meant that she would have to give herself blood thinning injections twice a day for ten days. In the end, the article says that she was named the MVP at all three events.
Emily Podschweit, a 5’7” libero and an aspiring beach player got her inspiration when she met legendary beach player Kerri Walsh at a clinic at the age of eleven. When Walsh told Emily to “dream big”, the pre-teen took it to heart. Emily lives and plays by, “No one will believe I want to be a beach volleyball player unless I’m the best”. The article basically talks about how she had to earn her way to the top. She got to the top by making her family move from Iowa to Colorado. She also emailed Jon Aharoni, the head coach for the U.S. under-19 beach volleyball national team.

Volleyball

...Volleyball is a highly enjoyable sport played by many individuals of all ages today. It is a sport that requires immense physical activity and coordination with other teammates. Volleyball can be very rewarding to our health since it involves movement of all our body parts, mainly the upper body. It also helps to improve our reflex since you have no idea when the ball will be heading your direction over the net. In the game of volleyball, every player has to be prepared to bump, set, spike, or dig the ball to the other teammates over the net. Volleyball can be played professionally, recreationally, on school teams, or for fun. So, what exactly is volleyball? Volleyball, originally called “mintonette” is a combination of basketball, baseball, tennis, and handball and it was invented by a man named William G. Morgan in 1895. Sports-information.org says that William G. Morgan was a physical fitness instructor for YMCA in Holyoke, Massachusetts. He wanted to invent a game that was not as physically hard on the body, and that is where volleyball came about. A ball was needed for the game and a basketball was thought to be too heavy so Morgan asked Spalding to make the first volleyball out of calf skin, and they did. 25 years later, after the invention of volleyball, rules were finally enforced into volleyball. Volleyball went from recreational, to professional, to competitive, and then finally a featured sport in the Olympics. The game begins with the serve of the volleyball. After...

Quit Volleyball

...Volleyball has been my life since before I can remember, but unfortunately every volleyball assistant I’ve ever had has quit. It started at a young age and I know it has changed me since then. It started during my club volleyball season at a fairly new organization called Maryland Juniors. Every year during travel volleyball season I have always been given both one head coach and one assistant coach to start a season off right. But, little did I know volleyball was very political, which causes issues between player, parents, and coaches. This changes the relationships on and off the court that makes me question sometime whether or not I want to continue playing the sport I love. One year I had a club volleyball coach who was very strong willed....

Volleyball Breach

...Let’s face it, when a kid sits the bench game in and game out they start feeling like a failure. I started playing volleyball in the 7th grade. I probably made the team because I was tall for thirteen years old. I worked out and practiced with passion but the better athletes prevailed. We had a total of sixteen girls on the team and six to eight of them got most of the playing time. That season was long and hard but I loved the sport and had no intentions of giving up. I thought my 8th grade year would be different, but nothing changed with the exception of me becoming stronger and taller. Even when I tried to imitate my better teammates, coordination and skill did not come easy. I probably got to play two or three times during that season. It is awful to sit on the bench. I would not wish it on anyone. I felt worthless....

Everything About Volleyball

...VOLLEYBALL A. History * The origins * William G. Morgan (1870-1942), who was born in the State of New York, has gone down in history as the inventor of the game of volleyball, to which he originally gave the name "Mintonette". * The young Morgan carried out his undergraduate studies at the Springfield College of the YMCA (Young Men's Christian Association) where he met James Naismith who, in 1891, had invented basketball. After graduating, Morgan spent his first year at the Auburn (Maine) YMCA after which, during the summer of 1895, he moved to the YMCA at Holyoke (Massachusetts) where he became director of physical education. In this role he had the opportunity to establish, develop and direct a vast programme of exercises and sport classes for male adults. * His leadership was enthusiastically accepted, and his classes grew in numbers. He came to realise that he needed a certain type of competitive recreational game in order to vary his programme. Basketball, a sport that was beginning to develop, seemed to suit young people, but it was necessary to find a less violent and less intense alternative for the older members. * At that time Morgan knew of no similar game to volleyball which could guide him; he developed it from his own sports training methods and his practical experience in the YMCA gymnasium. Describing his first experiments he said, "In search of an appropriate game, tennis occurred to me, but this required rackets, balls...

Gym Volleyball

...Gym Volleyball Final Essay 3/1/2012 Difference between indoor volleyball and beach volleyball The first difference that I will be explaining about indoor volleyball and beach volleyball is the courts. Indoor courts are 18mx9m with a parallel attack line, also the players from the back row in indoor volleyball must stay behind the attack line when hitting the ball. In beach volleyball the courts are smaller they are 16mx 8m as I saw in the video of Cody and Pats men’s open I determined that there is enough room for two players in each side of the court it gives the game more intensity when playing. You also noticed that the player may hit the ball from anywhere on their side of the net, if you get to experience beach volleyball you will be glad the court is smaller because you will get exhausted right away do to the sand that holds you back and how much faster the game gets to be because the ball will be able to stay in the air and won’t become a dead ball this makes the game more entertaining. Indoor volleyballs are made up from leather and are much heavier since I played indoor I felt the difference right away since the ball is heavier you are able to hit harder for a faster spike. Now I beach volleyball they are softer, lighter and a bit bigger than indoor balls since is lighter than it can float more in the air and wind so when you get a chance to serve the wind can help a small curve the ball. Also in Indoor volleyball is played with six players...

Michigan State Summer Volleyball

...I miss the feeling of accomplishment when I get an amazing dig and the rush of being on the court with my teammates. I miss the proud moments of beating the teams we didn’t think we could, and coming back from being down by so much, just by working together as a team. Volleyball was my passion— I loved playing it; even though I was small for my age compared to all of my other friends who played, I still worked twice as hard to prove to myself and my teammates that I had some skill. I had played on my middle school team in seventh and eighth grade, but I desperately wanted to play in high school. By the time the summer before my freshman year rolled around, I only had 3 months until high school try outs, which was a team I deeply wanted to be...

Informative Speech About Volleyball

...Volleyball Fans and players are anxiously awaiting the start of the game. The players are jumping and fidgeting around on the court waiting for the referee to blow his whistle to issue the start of the game. The whistle blows and the visiting team serves the ball while fans in the stands are clapping and stomping on the bleachers trying to distract her. The serve is good and the Titans returns a pass, set, kill and the crowd goes wild. This could be just the beginning to a fun filled game of volleyball. The sport of volleyball was created by a man named William G. Morgan of Holyoke, Massachusetts in 1895. Morgan was a physical education teacher at the YMCA and originally called it "mintonette". The first rules were made by Morgan himself. His rules called for a 6 foot 6 inch net and a court of 25x50 feet. A match composed of 9 innings and 3 serves for each team in each inning. In case of a serving error they got a second chance just like in tennis. If the ball hit the net on a serve it was considered a foul and it caused a side out or a point was taken away. In 1896 during a demonstration game, someone remarked to Morgan that the players seemed to be volleying the ball back and forth over the net, and perhaps "volleyball" would be a more descriptive name for the sport. Since the first creation of volleyball there has been many rule changes. For instance in 1900 the net height was raised to 7 feet, 6 inches, the dribbling line was eliminated, and the length of game was changed...

Beach Volleyball vs. Indoor Volleyball

...Ashley Lechleidner-Rodriguez English Composition 1101 September 30, 2011 Illustration/Compare-Contrast Indoor and Beach Volleyball have gained immense popularity over the years. They’re both very fun sports that anyone at any age can enjoy. Although most people would think both sports are the same, the truth is they are very different. The environment, rules of play and the collegiate opportunities that many players have are a few of the main components that separate these sports. Indoor volleyball was invented in Holyoke Massachusetts by William G. Morgan on February 9, 1895. Originally, the sport was known as “Mintonette” until it was changed a year later to “volleyball” which it is still known as today. The present name seemed to fit a lot better because of the nature of the game. Since then, the sport has grown at a fast rate throughout the world. It was added to the Summer Olympics program in 1924 where both men and women competed. On the other hand, Beach volleyball was introduced several years later in 1987 and became part of the Olympics in 1996. The environment of both sports is vastly different in many ways. Indoor is completely covered and usually has wood or concrete floors which make it very easy to move on. All players must be fully equipped with uniformed jerseys, kneepads, tennis shoes and the appropriate bottoms, usually spandex for females and gym shorts for males. Beach is played outside completely uncovered and on sand. Female players mostly wear...

My Volleyball Research Paper

...As my mom would tell her players how to make the best play possible. I watched as the players threw their bodies across the floor in an effort to keep the ball off of the floor, and stretch to kill the ball. Spending hour after hour at the gym watching, and learning new techniques to become a better player. This is when I knew I wanted to be a volleyball player, and I could not do it without the help from my mom. I would dread waking up at eight in the morning everyday in the humid month of August. My mom dragging me out of bed and taking me to the gym. I would hate sitting on the floor until my body went numb everyday. One practice, I was sitting on the floor dazing off in my young imagination when my mom yelled my name. I jolted out of my daze and walked over to her. Twelve girls were huddled around my mom. They all seemed intimidating. My mom gave me the volleyball, told me to go back to the end line and serve. It seems like an easy task, but when my mom told me if I missed the team would have to run it was not so easy. My hands were sweating and my heart was beating at a...
