Everyone has a different opinion about the true value of life. Some believe theres a set and definite price, while others believe you can't put any monetary value on the price if a human life. In my opinion, you can put a dollar value on the price of a life if you're part of an insurance company, or a government body. However, life is priceless to the family and loved ones of the victim, which always asks the main question. What is the real value of a life? Even though the family members of any tragety agree with the fact that you can't put a monetary value on life of a victim, the U.S.government, and some citizens including myself, feel differently. An example from Amanda Ripley’s article “WTC Victims: What's A Life Worth?”. The concept of …show more content…
11th, 2001. From her article, she states, “ Find your loved one's age and income and follow your finger to the magic number. Note that the lifetime earnings have been boosted by a flat $250,000 for "pain and suffering"--non economic losses, they are called. Tack on an extra $50,000 in pain and suffering for a spouse and for each child. The charts, while functional, are brutal, crystallizing how readily the legal system commodifies life.” She is basically saying that the amount of money back a person would receive back would depend on their social status, and their job and ultimate income. Even though to some, it might seem like a heartless, and horrible system, in my opinion it works. Since the family gets 250,000 dollars, for pain and suffering, then much more for the victims income, it makes sense that the more money you make, and the more your job helps society and the American people, you should naturally have a bigger and better profit. Therefore, the more kids and …show more content…
Others would say that the payouts for different jobs simply aren't fair. But it's not discrimination or hatred towards anyone. They just take the persons salary, and family members, and determine it that way. An example from Kenneth Feinberg’s article “What Is The Value Of A Human Life?” He states, “ Courtrooms, judges, lawyers and juries are not the answer when it comes to public compensation. I have resolved my personal conflict and have learned a valuable lesson at the same time. I believe that public compensation should avoid financial distinctions which only fuel the hurt and grief of the survivors. I believe all lives should be treated the same.” Just because all lives should be treated and given the same rights and freedoms doesn't necessarily mean that they should be awarded equal amounts. Many people who earn higher salaries live off of that salary, and for them to make everyone have the same amount of payout, it might not become enough for the family. If a CEO of a huge corporation died in a horrible tragedy, and was only payed out 250,000
