...143993 Daniel Olivan EN12 (R70) March 27, 2015 Time Check July 21, 2014. It was another Monday and it was a school day. I woke up early and drove to Ateneo de Manila University where I took up chemistry with materials science engineering. It was my first year in college and the semester just started a month ago, so I was only beginning to get to know the people in my course. On that Monday, my first class was chemistry and good thing that it was only a 50-minute class. I cannot take in all the formulas that Dr. Valera just discussed. My stress level was already too high. It was 8:20 am. My blockmates, Mariel, Diego, and Magin wanted to eat first before their next classes start. They have class at 9:30 while my next one was at 10:30, so we all headed to JSEC which was a cafeteria. After choosing a table, I volunteered to reserve the table and keep guard of their bags while the three of them went to food stalls to order. I checked my phone and it was 8:30 already but still I see no sign of him. Magin was the first one who got back and sat down with his bacon and eggs with fried rice. I expected that he would have mentioned his name, but he didn’t. Instead, he talked about how difficult it was to remember all of the dates in our upcoming history exam next week. I agreed and started asking him what the coverage of the exam was, so that he wouldn’t notice that I wasn’t paying much attention to what he was saying. The truth was I just...

...A DAY’S WAIT LITERARY ANALYSIS Author: Ernest Hemingway, an American writer. His writing celebrates heroes and explores the nature of courage in this story. In much of his writing he dramatizes the importance of bravery in the face of death and of life’s everyday problems. This story deals with the quiet courage needed to face fear. Looking at Hemingway´s biography we can find parallels between the story "A Day´s Wait" and the author´s real life. When Hemingway took part in World War I he was wounded twice. When he was in hospital he heard the doctor talk about his health and since he did not know any better he thought he would have to die. His own fear, the behaviour and the feelings in this situation Hemingway expresses through the character of the son. The boy only knows that you will die with a fever of 44 degrees but does not know that he lives in a country with different thermometers. Title: The title ‘A DAY’S WAIT’ suggests that an important thing is expected to happen till the end of the day. It suggests that somebody waited for something all day long. (It means that the protagonist had to spend a day waiting for his death (which ultimately did not occur). The title signifies the boy's tiring wait. Also, the story is set in the time span of one day.) Setting: The story is set in the country in winter. Point of view: First person point of view/ 1st person narrative, because a character tells the story and refers to himself as ‘I’, and participates in...

...A DAYS WAIT A brief Analysis The fateful misunderstanding Obviously there is an invisible wall between father and his son. They talk about two different things, the father about the disease and the son about his death but they do not know that they misunderstand each other. This fateful misunderstanding appears in different scenes where the father and son talk about "it", meaning two different things. One example is when the father asks his son why he does not go to sleep. "You don´t have to stay in here with me, Papa, if it bothers you." The son is talking about his death but does not mention his fear. He must be shocked when the father answers "It doesn't bother me". Because the father does not know of the fear of his son there is no reason for him to explain that he won´t die. Instead he goes out to hunt. The boy must think that his father does not even care that he will die, but prefers going out to hunt. This fateful misunderstanding happens another time, again Hemingway uses the word "it" to describe two different things. Father: "It´s nothing to worry about." He means the fever. "Just take it easy." Since the son always thinks of death he assumes his father tells him to take dying easy so he answers: "I am taking it easy". The hunting scene In the story "A Day´s Wait" there is a story in a story. In this part of the story the father goes out to hunt for a while while his son is in bed thinking about death. In the passage there is a description of nature...

...The story opens as a father discovers that his 9-year-old boy, Schatz, has a fever. The father sends for the doctor and he diagnoses a mild case of influenza. As long as the fever doesn’t go above 104 degrees, the doctor says, the boy will be fine, and he leaves three different types of medication for the father to administer with instructions for each. Schatz’s temperature is determined to be 102 degrees. When the doctor leaves, the father reads to Schatz from a book about pirates, but the boy is not paying attention and is staring fixedly at the foot of the bed. His father suggests he try to get some sleep, but Schatz says he would rather be awake. He also says that his father needn’t stay in the room with him if he is bothered. His father says he isn’t bothered, and after giving him his 11 o’clock dose of medication, the father goes outside. It is a wintry day with sleet frozen onto the countryside, and the father takes the family’s Irish setter out hunting along a frozen creek bed. Both man and dog fall more than once on the ice before they find a covey of quail and kill two. The father, pleased with his exploits, returns to the house. Upon returning home, he finds that Schatz has refused to let anyone into his room because he doesn’t want anyone else to catch the flu. The father enters anyway and finds the boy still staring at the foot of the bed. He takes Schatz’s temperature and finds it 102, as before. He tells Schatz his temperature is fine, and not to worry. Schatz...

...The First Eagle – Analysis Adaptations An interesting aspect of Hillerman's fictions is the multi-ethnic, multi-cultural contexts in which they are set with their particular historical imperatives and consequences. The "Big Res" itself although sparsely populated by the standards of large urban enclaves is nevertheless home to a wide mix of Native American tribal entities including Navajo, Apache, Hopi, Ute, Zuni as well as Anglos and Hispanics of various national origins. Add to this cultural diversity such social elements as the disparity of power and wealth between the communities, and the opportunities for friction and conflict are significant. Therefore, a possible focus for discussions of this novel could be to examine the ways in which Hillerman ignores, acknowledges, utilizes, or highlights particular elements of the cultural and economic contexts in the service of his plot, characterization, and themes. Characters Hillerman populates the novel with a rich cast of characters whom he reveals through their speech, their actions, and their thoughts. He also describes their physical appearance so that readers form specific and distinguishing images of them. Jim Chee is portrayed as a "traditional" Navajo who has studied to become a hatathali, a traditional singer who can conduct traditional curing rituals; he is also a universityeducated (University of Arizona) lawman as is his former supervisor, now retired, Joe Leaphorn (Arizona State University). The relationship...

...Organizations COMM1006E-02 Executive Summary John Butkus is set to open his second Mongolian Grill in just over a month, to be located in Waterloo, Ontario. Mr. Butkus who currently owns another Mongolian Grill in London, Ontario is debating if he should change the current floor plan for the Waterloo location after observing wait times in London. A design that would allow for customers to eat faster without taking away experience as well as a design that would increase total profit. Mr. Butkus has many potential design options to choose from. Choices must be made to include one additional food prep area which includes a food bar and sauce, oil, and spice bar. Whether or not to centralize the location of the grill which would add more counter space. He could also choose to only include one of the features above or none at all. Lastly Mr. Butkus could hire a firm that specializes in restaurant design so that an optimal design is used. After examination based on the London’s location wait times it is advised that Mr. Butkus put in both the additional food prep area and the extra counter space. This recommendation will allow for the restaurant to reduce wait times, which will increase turnover rates as more customers can be seated on a nightly bases. Financially this option does not cost much as the purchase and installation is rather cheap and only two additional workers will be needed to cover the busy periods (Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights). Overall total profit will...

...The long wait home I have been waiting for Ma since a really long time now. The frills on my dress were beginning gnaw my pink flesh and the heat was enjoying the show, shining mischievously. We had some feast in school, hence the dress instead of the uniform. I wonder what kept Ma away for such a long time. She told me that she’ll pick me up as soon as she finishes her purchase. Both Grandma and she would sew innumerable dresses for Bua. Today, they had gone to buy some other supplies. Grand ma was with her too. They told me to wait after school and assured me that they would be there before time. I patiently waited and after a long time of baking under the unwanted vitamin D, I went inside and sat on the staircase. Schools have a peculiar feel to them. They always have staircases; I guess the makers know how exciting it is to run away from the institution once you’re done for the day. There were several parents who’d come by to bring back their kids. While hoping that Ma would come sooner, it occurred to me that I had noticed Aunty. Misra Aunty I think was her name; not that it was of any consequence then, as she was in this great tussle to drag her daughter’s hand in what seemed like an unwanted stretch of the limb. She somehow threw in a glance! Man! I am dead meat. I hope she doesn't notice me. I wonder what caught her fancy, my dress or the constant dragging of her daughter, who seemed quite forlorn. She looked like she was tired of dragging her with one hand,...

...I had the topic for this speech chosen since the second or third week of class. Public radio is such a big part of my life and the life of my family that I knew it would be something that I could write passionately about. When I started to prepare this speech, I initially had a hard time finding sources. I was focusing on Chicago Public Media as a whole and that was only bringing up one or two hits other than Chicago Public Media’s website. After struggling through that for a few days, I realized that what I really wanted to emphasize was Chicago Public Radio so I searched for that instead. Thankfully I came up with several sources and I built my paper upon those. I knew that Chicago Public Radio had a fantastic program line-up and that I could use that as the basis for my argument. People love to be entertained. And most people think that Chicago Public Radio is just old people news – all stale and boring. I knew that I had a prime opportunity to expose everyone in class to the diversity that is Chicago Public Radio. I initially struggled with how to organize my speech without it just becoming one big “send your money to WBEZ” talk. I wanted clear reasons so I chose to focus on three main ideas: News, Entertainment and Community. They are the three big focuses of Chicago Public Radio and WBEZ so I knew that I would find tons of information to back those up. When I started looking at all of the different news programs that are aired, I was amazed at how...

...fatherland! Government says sex education is the answer but is it really is? I believe that being well educated about sex is not an answer. But thus chastity education is! Teaching sex education doesn’t guarantee that these number of teens will be lessen for it will only lead teens to be more curious about sex which eventually push them to doing it. Condoms, pills and other contraceptives don’t guarantee either. Worst, it can give you diseases. However if chastity education is being taught in school and most specially at home, teens will learn how to value what they have and their abstinence will be strengthen. Waiting for that right time is really worth the wait! For in that right time you’ll find yourself be with the person you truly deserve. If your love one insists in doing it, say “NO”! If he truly loves you, he’ll wait. The seminar really opened my eyes on the pros and cons of pre-marital sex and the consequences you’ll face in indulging it especially at an early age. Always remember that darkness can only hide us from people but it can’t hide us from God. God sees all. Say “NO” now and be bless throughout your lifetime. True Love...

...The definition of a waiting line is a list of consumers who continues to wait to pay for a specific service from a restaurant or other service facilities. The way I see it understanding waiting lines and figuring out how to manage them is one of the most important areas in operation management. In companies or in private life, there are instances of procedures which generates waiting lines or queues. The reason why these waiting lines occur is for the present services facility is inadequate to provide service at that instance. As an examples when people travel by airplanes, I have personal involvements with numerous types of waiting lines or queues. To buy tickets for a movie, I normally have to stand in line at movie theater ticket office. When I arrive at an airport most of the time I stand in line to check baggage, then I stand in line again to get a seat assignment. After that I line up again for the TSA security checkpoint and the again for the last time when waiting to board the plane to scan the boarding passes. I also wait when I am inside the plane, I wait for those ahead of me to take their seats. And finally, we may wait for baggage to arrive and then for ground transportation. I think this quote is very important and says a lot about waiting lines. “Perhaps the biggest influence on our feelings about lines, though, has to do with our perception of fairness. When it comes to lines, the universally acknowledged standard is first come first served: any deviation is, to...

...Designing Waits That Work Please note that gray areas reflect artwork that has been intentionally removed. The substantive content of the article appears as originally published. REPRINT NUMBER 50407 DESIGN THINKING: USER EXPERIENCE DesigningWaitsThatWork Designers at restaurants, theme parks and elsewhere have investigated how to make waiting in line more pleasant. What they have learned has profound implications for all managers. BY DONALD A. NORMAN THE LEADING QUESTION AT SOME POINT, every manager has had to tell someone to wait. We all have to wait sometimes. It’s a simple matter of timing and resources. Whenever two systems interact, one is invariably ready before the other. In the factory, this disparity can lead to stockpiles of goods or bottlenecks. When people are involved, it can give rise to inefficiency and anger. This is no good for customers or employees. But the psychological impact of waits can be managed, and studies in design show us how to do it. My introduction to design started with my studies of fundamental principles of interaction to enhance the use of technology.1 Now, as I teach and consult on the applications of these principles to business, I apply them to many aspects of customer experience. In places where waits are required, these principles can not only make waiting more pleasant but can also make it feel like not waiting at all. Sometimes inducing a wait can improve the customer experience. When waits are inevitable...

...Wi-Gig: Hurry Up and Wait Christopher Campbell May 21, 2015 EN1320 ITT-Tech- NSA- Jacksonville FL Have you ever invited a friend over to your home only to be asked the now all to familiar question “do you have Wi-Fi?”. Most people assume that Wi-Fi and the Internet are one and the same when in fact they are quite different. The term Wi-Fi or Wireless Fidelity is used to describe a standardized wireless local network. The common day Wi-Fi is used to connect computers, cell phones, tablets, and even T.V.’s to a consumers’ internet connection, making setup quick and easy. While the current day Wi-Fi systems typically contain hardware using many patents, Vic Hayes is credited with establishing the 802.11 standards in 1997 (inventors.about.com). The original Wi-Fi systems typically reached speeds of 1-2 Mbps which was more than enough for its intended purpose. The newer standard, 802.11ac is capable of reaching speeds of up to 100Gbps which is quite a feat. Even though the Wi-Fi technology has greatly improved there is one big problem in the U.S. (and most of the world) when it comes to the average residential user and that is the Internet speeds available to the consumer. While you may be more than satisfied with your internet connection, you should know that the U.S. ranked 25th out of the top 194 countries worldwide for average internet connection speed.(“PC Magazine”) The irony of this is completely overlooked by so many of the average consumers. As previously...

The video starts out by introducing a young boy, taking notice to every detail and riding his bicycle who will later witness an accident. It then goes on to introduce a young girl and her mother. The child is portrayed as sweet and innocent; playing with her toys and listening to her mother. The mother is portrayed as kind and loving; calling her daughter pet names and...
