The actions that I would take to address major communication issues in a situation are (1) separate the people from the problem, (2) focus on interests, not positions, (3) invent options for mutual gain, (4) insist on objective criteria and (5) know what your alternatives are. First separating the people from the problem can help to separate relationship issues from what is important and allow parties to deal with them separately.
