Walgreens management method has a small amount of change since the founder, Charles R. Walgreens systematic approach. As an entrepreneur, Charles had much more work to do than management today because he had to create a starting point. In 1893 when Walgreens was founded, there was already over 1,500 drugstores competing for business and which many were successful (n.d., Our Past). This left customers with many stores to choose from. Walgreen decided on beating the odds with changing the layout of the store and broadening the merchandise at feasible prices. Unlike the other drug stores Walgreen store was attractive and brightly lit, had wider aisles, and provided pots and pans, which was unheard of as well as products for health and wellness. Walgreens insisted on a wonderful customer experience, himself and his colleague personally greeted each customer. Always thinking of ways to grow a customer base, Walgreen also provided hot food during the cold season. Walgreens competition only served cold items ((n.d., Our Past). Like Walgreen, management today consistently keeps new ideas going to satisfy their growing customer base. Today Walgreens is continuing to provide a well experience for customers. Besides upgrading the physical store, management trains employees on how to provide exceptional customer care. Management continues to provide the right products and solutions in every neighborhood store in America. Upon the stores success, Walgreens has expanded the number of stores incorporating its well experience concepts from 400 at the start of fiscal 2013 to 600 today ((n.d., Our Past). Like the past Walgreens carries products from home care products, to medications. This makes it easy for customers to shop and get everything they need. Doing this expands retail and health care and causes them to successfully merge. Providing over the counter medicines brings a high rate of customer traffic and solves customer solutions. The continuing advancement of community pharmacy is another role of Walgreens management. Walgreens is advocating a greater role for community pharmacy to offer unparalleled to innovative, high quality, affordable health and wellbeing services ((n.d., Our Past). Management continues to create ways to efficiently grow a retail store and pharmacy as Charles R. Walgreens initiated. Walgreens structure has 10 different divisions, which all offer a variety of career opportunities in each division. Brand marketing and all products are handled by marketing. Hardware and software are both maintained by e-commerce, engineering, and IT which all creates the improvements of Walgreens technologically. In all Walgreens establishments team members report to their local managers. The managers in the Walgreens establishments then report to corporate to give information of inventory, sales, and other business relations. The in store manager hire qualified individuals to fill the many positions in the store. These positions include: Store clerk, beauty clerk, photo clerk, service clerk, store team lead, and management trainee positions. Walgreens also provides in store level internships. This division is made up of 5 departments and operates 19 distribution centers that distribute merchandise over 7,500 retail locations (Tucker-Mclaughlin, M. (n.d.)). This team reports to the corporate office. Positions of the distribution centers include: management, team members, maintenance, and human resources. Internships are available le for this department as well (Tucker-Mclaughlin, M. (n.d.)).The pharmacy is the heart of the store. The pharmacy positions include: pharmacist, pharmacy technician, and pharmacy student programs. College students who are pursuing a degree in pharmacy are also offered in store internship as well as a variety of corporate internships. The Walgreens structure consists of 6 positions: Executive Vice President – Oversees all of the operations of the store. Senior Vice President – Consists of three senior vice presidents that oversee Walgreen stores in specific regions. Their job is to cover the sales, profitability, salary, expenses, investments, customer service, and moral of the employees. They also have service in the pharmacy department. Operations Vice President – Consists of 16 operations vice presidents, which they all oversee 200 – 250 individual stores and up to 9 district managers. District Manager – Every district manager has responsibility of up to 25 stores. Store Manager – Responsible for the management of both the retail and pharmacy sides of their individual store. Pharmacy Manager – Responsible for reporting to the store manager and a pharmacy district manager. (Seydler, D., Black, G., Yonkoskiv, K., Giles, K., Wilke, J., & Gedeborg, R. (2013).

Walgreens is a functional organizational structure. Walgreens groups their individuals by groups and functions of their groups. Aaron Thomas, who is senior market manager of Walgreens is responsible for Walgreens market strategy. As a senior market manager Aarons daily responsibilities include: * Developing growth strategies for Walgreens across all Northeast markets * Urban site selection and focused portfolio management of Walgreens growth and market investments * Expanding Walgreens reach across all and markets
(Meet our Team Members (Walgreens Careers) Aaron’s job consists of also providing recommendations based on analysis and research to support Walgreens corporate goals. Aaron is very efficient and qualified for his position with having previous sales experience, college, and volunteer work. Having these qualities gains valuable insight for understanding others, building relationships with other professionals. Aaron is also very passionate about his work which is a plus and is all about results. As a successful senior market manager communication and cooperation is important, and that’s what’s being proven to keep Walgreens successful. Walgreens market share is currently expanding which shows no need for improvements, as a senior market manager Aaron if effectively serving his organization. Walgreens decisions are based upon a three part strategy; a new model, building community connections, and responding to change. First Walgreen stores want to keep the store attractive as possible so they expanded the pharmacy area. More space for health and health care and a room for patients is what draws customers in, and in return they can receive health care. Walgreens also upgraded information technology so that there are patient’s portals for customers. The patient portals offer information on customer’s conditions, appointments, and when last treated at any Walgreens in America. Walgreens also partnered up with Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago. Walgreens continues to respond to change in healthcare. The company is putting its assets to their best use, by unleashing the value in the clinical intellectual capital of pharmacists (How can you transform to achieve a wider company mission? (n., d)). Walgreens stands by being unmatched by other pharmacy/retail industries. The company focuses on the best “well” experience for every customer as Charles R. Walgreen. Walgreens is leading this industry with opening healthcare clinics in stores. Walgreens continues to lead the healthcare transformation In terms of: a great number of patient consultants with pharmacists, top customer satisfaction, a very high acquisition rate of new patients, and a higher retail prescription market share. Walgreens continues to grow and invent innovative ideas for a better store, pharmacy, and customer service. The managers of Walgreens motivate their team to ensure efficiency. Management maintains their market awareness, expanding the store, and staying on track with new health methods and products.

...Company Past and Current Strategies History Walgreens Co is the largest dug retailing chain in the nation. The first Walgreens store ever was just a drugstore at first. It all started in the year 1901 in Chicago by Charles Walgreen. His father lent him $2,000 in order to place a down payment for the drugstore. In 1909, he sold half interest in his first drug store and bought his second drugstore. The second drugstore served lunch and had a large soda fountain. About seven years later, seven stores joined under the corporate name Walgreen Co. Due to the fact of alcohol prohibition the 1920s was a successful time for Walgreen. Although alcohol was illegal prescription whiskey was available and was sold by Walgreen. Four years after that they opened up 20 more stores in Chicago and had an increase in sales of $1.55 million. In the year 1922, Walgreen Co introduced a malted milkshake which led to the future establishment of ice cream manufacturing plants. The firm was first listed on the New York Stock Exchange in 1927. About two years later they opened up about 397 stores in 87 cities and had a $47 million increase on sales.
