Staying upbeat through the holidays sometimes can be hard. So much rides on the month of December. We picture cocoa-drinking evenings sitting by the fire listening to Christmas music but with 25 days to frolic it’s realistic to assume that something or someone is bound to throw off our holiday cheer at least once during the month of December. So what do you do in a moment of let-down or frustration? Long before you throw the nativity into the fire consider taking a walk to recapture your holiday mood. Researchers at Queen’s University in Canada showed that if you pull back your shoulders and stroll with straight up posture you have a better chance of feeling happy. The study suggests that even walking to lunch can have an impact on your

...from what it used to be cell phones especially. The behavior I choose to be is the new way that students interact with schools. Walking to school every day I noticed that students don’t talk to each other anymore. Even when they are together on a table, walking or even during class, there is no more a face to face interaction. Technology has become the new face to interact with one another. The theory on this observation is the social behavior perspective. This theory explains how people interact with the environment. Even when they are in groups dung lunch most of them are on their cell phones. Student's face to face communication is fading by the frequency of texting, not merely in the sense that they speak is becoming abbreviated but the focus associated with talking is becoming distracted and scarce. BACKGROUND: “From a survey 800 American young people between ages 12 and17 regarding their use of mobile phones . The researchers report that half of the teens were sending 50 or more messages a day , with older teenage girls sending an average of 100 messages daily”. (Chin, Jen, Fan, 2013). Clearly, text messaging on mobile phones is an important element in the lives of many American teenagers, though voice calls remain part of their communication patterns as well. ...Business Ethics After reading the case study involving Ms. Alexander and her opportunity with Next Step, I would advise Ramona to pray, even fast, about accepting the position. Hopefully she was already prayed up before she went to the ‘Meet and Great’ at Next Steps Headquarters (HQ). As Christians, we must ‘…be wise as serpents, but gentle as dove’s…' (Matthew 10:16, ESV), and one way we get wisdom is to be in constant communication with our one heavenly Father, whom is all knowing. Before leaving, she read up on Next Step. When Ms. Alexander arrived at Next Step’s HQ, she was showered with all sorts of gifts and treated to lunch by the Corporate Recruiter who told her of the circumstances that makes it possible for advancement and the money she could be earning with those advancements. Within Ms. Alexander’s research of the company, she found a mix of different opinions, regarding Next Step. One article, and interview with the CEO, has the CEO talking about how he wants to create a healthier America, making it seem that he truly loves and cares for the people. But, when Ms. Alexander was present at the companies pep rally at Next Step’s HQ, he seemed to be disrespectful and scornfully abusive to his clientele, calling them ‘fat, lazy, lethargic Americans’ who needs to be saved. Turning the spectacle into a religious one. The CEO also talked about being an industry leader in the ethics code in his interview. Ms. Alexander mention that to the corporate recruiter...

...Chapter 1 * It all starts on a cold, bright day in April 1984. At 1 p.m., Winston Smith, a small, frail man of 39 years drags himself home for lunch at his apartment on the 7th floor of the Victory Mansions. The face of Big Brother, the leader of the Party and a heavily mustached and ruggedly handsome man of about 45, appears on giant, colorful posters everywhere in Airstrip One, Oceania saying "BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU," runs the caption. Book 1 Chapter 2 * Winston believes that the stability of the Party depends on having a lot of paralyzingly stupid people around like Tom Parsons, his neighbor and coworker. The Party decides everyone needs to love the Party and not anyone else. So the Party eliminated love among family members, actual lovers, friends, and one-night-stands. The Party trains and encourages children to monitor their parents for symptoms of unorthodoxy. Book 1 Chapter 3 Since thinking about the future is really just depressing, Winston dreams about the past. More specifically, he dreams about his mother’s disappearance when he was age 10 or 11, the alluring brunette at his workplace, and Shakespeare. A whistle from the telescreen wakes Winston up at 7:30 a.m. Rise and shine, dear dystopian citizen. Book 1 Chapter 4 * Apparently, the Party despises littering. Oceanians are to deposit every scrap of paper they find into the ominously named "memory holes," slits in and alongside buildings leading to underground furnaces where all documents are destroyed...

Beauty and Magazines

...Women and Beauty Magazines by Christine Hetcher             Beauty magazines, such as Cosmopolitan, Glamour, and Marie Claire, are widely read by women throughout America .  What do women actually think of these magazines?  Do they feel the magazines are helpful, degrading, or simply something to read?  This paper is a survey interview to determine what women in their late teens and early twenties think about beauty magazines in Americatoday.  The purpose of this study is to determine whether women like or dislike beauty magazines, why they like or dislike them, and how frequently women read beauty magazines. Background             This section reviews the previous studies conducted on the effects of women’s magazines. Magazines specifically written for women have been in circulation for over sixty years, discussing whatever issues were relevant to women at the time (Moskowitz, 1996).  Some of the earlier magazines focused on a war-time rebellion of feminism.  Moskowitz (1996) conducted a study about the effects of war-time magazines and said, “Women’s magazines of the Cold War era remain symbols of antifeminism” (p. 66).  Moskowitz (1996) found that many women liked the articles because many magazines discussed important issues to them, such as stress, emotionalism, and feminism (p.66).  Moskowitz (1996) said, “recognition of emotional tension was common for women’s magazines” (p.67).  This recognition “presented a whole new genre of articles that gave housewives the freedom...

...students are not attending college immediately after high school, they are returning students who have not finished their college education, or they may be full-time working adults or parents who are trying to obtain their education around their already busy schedules. Students of this type need to have alternate paths to choose from which will allow them to meet their other obligations and needs first. These types of students need to be able to balance their personal lives while also being able to successfully reach their ultimate goal, obtaining a college degree. These types of students will likely take a different approach than attending a brick and mortar school. While some students require the more traditional university experience, research shows that an online education is often better suited for the non-traditional student because it is more flexible and convenient, affordable, and can offer a high quality education. An online education is a more flexible and convenient learning format to choose from when compared to the traditional university experience. This benefits non-traditional students because many of them are working adults who need the convenience and flexibility offered by an online education program so they can pursue their coursework and studies in additional to their full time jobs. In this type of learning environment, “the learner is provided with choices and/or options in terms of what, where, when, why, and how they learn. Providing choice in any one...

...| | Panera Bread Company | The observation and analysis of a fast food restaurant | Panera Bread Company | The observation and analysis of a fast food restaurant | Background Information Rationale I chose to observe operations at Panera Bread Company (Panera) based on two factors: 1) I like the food and overall ambiance – I think Panera uses ingredients that are fresher and of higher quality than more traditional fast food restaurants. I also like that customers can sit down to eat using proper silverware and plates rather than using plastic utensils eating off of paper wrappers and plastic forks. Many Panera locations also have a patio, for al fresco dining, a cozy fireplace, for the winter months, and a small section with upholstered chairs and sofas. 2) Panera offers free Wi-Fi – this was an important factor because I wanted to take notes during each visit without bringing attention to myself. Because Panera offers Wi-Fi, it is not unusual to see customers with laptops. Visits I visited three different Panera locations over the course of several weeks and spent approximately 2 hours at each location. ...continued on the current diet. Thankfully, Morgan was able to quit and return his body slowly back to the healthy shape it once was in, but this happy ending isn't always the case for millions of Americans. Left untreated, obesity will surpass smoking as the main cause of preventable death. Between the ruthless marketing, placement of restaurants in low income neighborhoods and near schools, massive portion sizes riddled with fat and carbohydrates and more than 46 million people eating out at only McDonald's daily, fast food has easily gone from a “once in a while treat” to one of the most menacing killers in the country. Portion size and ingredients play a grand factor in the fattening affects of fast food. According to research gathered by Washington State University, Fast foods contain substantially fewer vitamins and minerals such as Vitamin A, carotene, vitamin C, vitamin E, calcium, magnesium and zinc. (“Does Fast Food...,” 2011) Doctors Lisa R. Young and Marion Nestle state that portion sizes started to grow in 1970, rose very sharply in the 1980s, and from there continued to grow in tandem with increasing body size, soon exceeding the national health...
