In the movie, Bud Fox makes his way into Gekko’s office initially through persistence but makes his mark by informing Gekko of inside information regarding a company, Blue Star Airlines. Gekko rewards Bud Fox by showing him the rich and fast life, and Bud Fox continues to help Gekko make money in an illegal fashion. Eventually, Bud Fox wants to be in on part of a deal that involves Blue Star Airlines, for which his father is a labor union head. The deal goes sour for Bud Fox when he finds out that Gekko plans to dismantle the company and sell its parts, destroying his father’s and father’s friends’ jobs, rather than the initial plan of changing how the company is run and helping it succeed. This causes Bud Fox to go to Gekko’s enemy, Sir Larry, for help in order to successfully save the airline. With time, our life style has changed so much and even if there are more than seven billion people on Earth we still continue to feel more and more lonely and isolated. Isolation is a theme which inspires a lot of writers. Margaret Atwood in “Death by Landscape” and Herman Melville in “Bartleby, the Scrivener” illustrate the topic of isolation. Lois and Bartleby, who are the two main characters respectively, have created their own isolation, and are negatively affected by it. We will see how they are both physically and socially isolated, the reasons and the consequences of these isolation. First, from the beginning of “Death by Landscape” we can see that Lois is isolating herself physically and socially when the narrator says: “Now that the boys are grown up and Rob is dead, Lois has moved to a condominium apartment in one of the new waterfront developments” (Atwood 25). While thinking about this specific fear, a short story came to mind from high school that may have placed the seed for this terror. Herman Melvin’s Bartleby the Scrivener tells the story of a new employee of a Law Firm on Wall Street. Everything in this story embodies my fear of my future profession. A scrivener is someone who serves as a scribe. Bartleby is a new scribe to this law firm and works day and night handwriting copies of legal documents. ...Wall Street It seems ironic that this film was set in the early 1980’s which was the same time that I was working for a privately owned Fortune 500 company. I gained a lot of experience with this company by learning how to handle different situations that would arise, but mostly how to work with a diversity of personalities. Both Fox and Gekko quoted “it’s another dog with fleas” and that reminded me of my feelings during this tenure of employment which was ‘it’s a dog eat dog world.” Our firm had a group of headhunters that would scour the colleges to bring new talent into the company. Every year we would receive a group of sales trainees and they would work in various departments learning the business from the bottom up. We were privileged to host these young men (there was never a female trainee at that time) for a period of six weeks. Many would start the program ready to tackle the world. ...Occupy Unmasked Occupy Unmasked was a very interesting film. It screams propaganda but there are multiple points that were put into perspective for me. In my last post I made an argument in support of the Wall Street Occupiers. After viewing this film it influenced my opinion in the opposite direction. Before viewing this film I was familiar with the Occupy Wall Street movement, however I wasn’t too familiar with the Occupy movements across the country. After covering multiple riots/protests through the semester, I find the Occupy movement to be comical. However something I take away from it, is the true power we the people hold when in numbers. This movement had no organization and more then half the people involved were not even aware of what they were protesting for. Most protestors were just infatuated with being apart of a rebellion. How can you have a meaningful movement when the people taking part in the protest are uneducated in the goals of the protest? In the film, protestors are interviewed and can not answer simple questions as to what the sign they are holding even means. This was a perfect example of how clueless the people involved were. The protestors couldn’t even read the sign they were holding and elaborate vaguely on what the sign means or why they are protesting. In the face of his brother’s triumph in Alaska, Willy struggles to achieve the same level of unrealistic, exaggerated success as a mere salesman in Death of a Salesman. Similarly, by working under the exaggeratedly cutthroat Gordon Gekko, Bud Fox seeks a hollow life of luxury, stolen through cheating. Both Willy and Bud try to succeed with exaggerated and unrealistic goals due to the pressure presented to them through external forces such as their mentors, society, their families, and the workplace. The pressure that Bud and Willy’s mentors place on them causes them to exaggerate their goals to unrealistic levels. As a result, Willy’s lucidity spirals into a deep depression that leaves him in a delusional mentality that refuses to let him face the reality of his present situation while Bud’s sanity becomes overcome by his hunger for power that is fed by his ego and arrogance.
