The concept of oligopolies aren’t new they have been around since the beginning of trade. Never before now have the oligopolistic competition been so savagely contested across so many industries. One of these industries in the United States of America is the Media industry.Any business that is related to the media such as film production, broadcasting, distribution, movie theatre’s, television, book publishing, newspaper publishing, recorded music, etc. belongs to the media industry. The media industry is a powerful communication tool. The media Industry has captivated many companies however, only a few of these companies has grown big. This gives these businesses huge influence over price and other aspects of the market. Since it is the middle ground, oligopoly examples are abundant in our economic system today. The Walt Disney Company often times is thought of as that company that owns Disney theme parks, however there is much more to the multi-million dollar company than just their theme parks. The Walt Disney Company owns many companies, and it is one of that largest multi million dollar company in the world. The largest operating segment of the Walt Disney company was the media network segment. Which contributed to about 23.6 billion dollars in 2016. The Walt disney company is the world’s largest mixture of media entertainment and produces a large number of movies and television shows. Walt Disney Studios produces films through imprints Walt Disney Pictures, Disney Animation, and Pixar, and its Marvel Entertainment is a top comic book publisher and film producer. In this field, Disney’s top competitors are News Corporation, Time Warner, Dreamworks Animation and Viacom. This market structure is an Oligopoly. This means that there is a limited number of sellers, and the Walt Disney Company’s actions significantly affect the market. Disney is what you would consider a price maker in this market and can both raise and lower the market prices by their actions. Oligopoly is a market structure in which the number of sellers is small. It requires strategic thinking, unlike perfect competition, monopoly and monopolistic competition. Under oligopoly, Walt Disney Company is big enough to affect the market. The Company must respond to it's rivals’ choices, but it's rivals are responding to your choices as well.
