Wanderlust - the insatiable desire to travel the world, to sip on your favorite latte at a local cafe in Paris, or to walk among the ancient ruins in Malaysia. Then, of course, rational reasoning brings you back to reality and you put your travel plans on hold, hoping to visit these romanticised locations eventually, and never actually following through. The thing is, most trips do not require spending an exorbitant amount of money. In fact, I often find that many of the easiest ways to save money while traveling are also the best ways to truly experience the cultural nuances that make each place unique.

While backpacking Europe, I only had one small backpack, which prevented me from buying anything that I could not carry. To this day, I plan my trips around small luggage, allowing myself only enough room for the necessary items and a few small souvenirs.

3. Sight-Seeing
The best way to sightsee on a budget is to plan ahead. Often, cities and museum associations have package deals that can be bought online in advance. Students generally receive discounted rates when traveling, so if that’s you, be sure to have your student identification card with you on these excursions.

4. Meals
One of the best ways to save money while traveling is to eat like a local, and that does not mean eating every single meal at a local cafe or diner. Instead, hunt down a local grocery store and indulge in the unique variety of foods the culture has to offer. I find I always appreciate the subtle differences I discover when preparing similar dishes from around the world. You do not need to be a gourmet chef either - in fact, some of my favorite travel meals include simple sandwiches, stuffed with local dairy, meats, and condiments. Homemade sandwiches are cheap, and they also happen to make for some perfect on-the-go meals. Similarly, for nights out on the town, enjoy a couple homemade cocktails before hitting the local watering hole - this will undoubtedly help you avoid breaking the

...I am not completely sure whether or not it is because I have lived in the same place my entire life and feel incredibly sheltered from the outside of Mississippi, but I have always wanted to simply go. I suppose one could consider the term “wanderlust” when reading this. Wanderlust is defined as a strong desire to travel. Traveling truly drew to my heart on my first cruise ship with my entire family to the Cayman Islands. The different adventures to go on and the unique people and culture of the place seemed beyond intriguing to me. It was as if I was on a whole new world with all the different characteristics New Mexico had to offer. Traveling has become one of the various things I am passionate...

Genetic Influence on Behaviour

...explain what we are and do in genetic terms, began with the English polymath Francis Galton, who in 1883 coined the term "eugenics" to refer to his proposal that humanity improve itself through judicious breeding. Galton's measurements of the physical and mental characteristics of various groups had convinced him that upper-class gentlemen like himself were innately smarter than poor white men, let alone "inferior races" like Africans. On a trip to Africa, however, Galton was mightily impressed with the physical endowments of Hottentot women, whose bodies he measured from afar with a sextant because he was too timorous to approach them. Galton's ideas were carried forward in the United States by Charles Davenport, who directed biological research at the prestigious Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory on Long Island around the turn of the last century. Davenport believed in the heritability of traits like pauperism, shiftlessness, and the ability to be a naval officer. The latter, he asserted, was composed of subtraits for thalassophilia,...

As a whole, Fleetwood recreational vehicles span the full range of the market, with their retail prices ranging from $3,000 to more than $200,000. The 1970s was a period of rapid growth and expansion for Fleetwood. As the decade ended, the revolution in Iran -- sky-rocketing gasoline costs, and the buying public's fear of a recession, along with rising interest rates -- created an across-the-board slump in sales. Since most of Fleetwood's production line were vehicles, gasoline shortages, along with the spiraling costs of fuel, shook the RV market to its foundations. Value Creation: In 1990, Fleetwood produced about 35,000 houses in 26 plants in 13 U.S. states....

Environmental Changes Associated with Mass Urban Tourism

...The Environmentalist, 20, 233 247, 2000 2000 Kluwer Academic Publishers. Manufactured in The Netherlands. Environmental changes associated with mass urban tourism and nature tourism development in Hong Kong C. Y. JIMU Department of Geography and Geology, The Uni¨ ersity of Hong Kong, Pokfulam Road, Hong Kong Summary. Hong Kong’s tourism is overwhelmingly urban-focused. There is a heavy concentration of tourist and ancillary facilities in a small core urban area. A well-defined tourist business district has evolved with imprints on urban morphology. Hotels and the travel industry have limited direct environmental impacts; recent efforts have reduced energy and water consumption and waste generation. Changing preferences and market diversification call for countryside and resort types of tourism. The mainly young visitors are increasingly interested in the scenic countryside with a well-established country-park system, the tourist potential of which has been neglected. Hitherto rural excursions have been confined to ‘honeypots’ with little penetration away from main roads. The varied possibilities of nature tourism with ecotourism ingredients can be tapped as an adjunct to the city-based counterpart. New tourist nodes such as scattered resorts and a resort island can bring visitors close to nature. The changing patterns of consumption and the increase in rural visitorship demand measures to forestall environmental degradation. Keywords: tourism, environmental impacts, landscape...

Third Girl

...to speak scathingly of Edgar Alien Poe, he had complained of the lack of method or order in the romantic outpourings of Wilkie Collins, had lauded to the skies two American authors who were practically unknown, and had in various other ways given honour where honour was due and sternly withheld it where he considered it was not. He had seen the volume through the press, had looked upon the results and, apart from a really incredible number of printer's errors, pronounced that it was good. He had enjoyed this literary achievement and enjoyed the vast amount of reading he had had to do, had enjoyed snorting with disgust as he flung a book across the floor (though always remembering to rise, pick it up and dispose of it tidily in the waste-paper basket) and had enjoyed appreciatively nodding his head on the rare occasions when such approval was justified. And now? He had had a pleasant interlude of relaxation, very necessary after his intellectual labour. But one could not relax for ever, one had to go on to the next thing. Unfortunately he had no idea what the next thing might be. Some further literary accomplishment? He thought not. Do a thing well then leave it alone. That was his maxim. The truth of the matter was,...

...Praise for The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down “Fadiman describes with extraordinary skill the colliding worlds of Western medicine and Hmong culture.” —The New Yorker “This fine book recounts a poignant tragedy…It has no heroes or villains, but it has an abundance of innocent suffering, and it most certainly does have a moral…[A] sad, excellent book.” —Melvin Konner, The New York Times Book Review “An intriguing, spirit-lifting, extraordinary exploration of two cultures in uneasy coexistence…A wonderful aspect of Fadiman’s book is her even-handed, detailed presentation of these disparate cultures and divergent views—not with cool, dispassionate fairness but rather with a warm, involved interest that sees and embraces both sides of each issue…Superb, informal cultural anthropology—eye-opening, readable, utterly engaging.” —Carole Horn, The Washington Post Book World “This is a book that should be deeply disturbing to anyone who has given so much as a moment’s thought to the state of American medicine. But it is much more…People are presented as [Fadiman] saw them, in their humility and their frailty—and their nobility.” —Sherwin B.
