I have not written to you for a long time, but I have finally managed to drop you a few line. It has been a real struggle since I enlisted. No day passes where I am not contemplating when I can forthcome to you and the family. It is very dangerous to even send this, I can't tell you much because all news outgoing is censored by our officers. Orders from officers are very strict at the moment, I will write to you in the future, if I survive this nightmare called war. Although it has been a almost three months from the tragic day I left you, but it feels as if a century has passed since i've seen you. As we reached the destination of the war in Ypres, Belgium, our battalion met up with the French-Algerian and British troops in the month of February. On 4 p.m. of April 22, the great German attack began. As we were trying to defend the last scrap of Belgium soil and claim "no mans" land. Something new, terrifying, unheard of was brought to the battlefield. The Germans for the first time used chlorine gas something unacceptable weapon in war. Unexpectedly this mysterious green gas was not a force to be messed with. What seemed to be 6000 cans of this gas was over 3m high caused a panic and wave of casualties. From the constant force of this advanced found weaponry, our troops withdrew from the battlefield four days later. And already in that short amount of time we lost half of our troops. My newly found friends have all perished, even Bill. The man that I knew since pre-school. I feel nothing but loneliness when you are not around me. I have lost all wishes of winning the war, but instead wishes to come back to you, mother. I made it back unharmed, but I have got a splitting headache, owing to the use of the gas used against us, I hope it is nothing so I can see you and the family one more
