Even now, they still existed and were still as strong as they were in the past. The thought of them fighting against those mighty creatures frightened the soldiers. They started to believe that they’ll fail the mission of defeating the demon king. Even worse, they worried about their own life and started to fear death. Their morale was below zero. But even so, the soldiers didn’t escape the army and keep advancing. One of the reasons was the fate of those who run away from the army, they’ll become traitors and only death awaited them. Flannery O Connor

...change in the course of the story, remaining essentially the same at the end as he or she was at the beginning.  A dynamic character, in contrast, is one that does undergo an important change in the course of the story.  More specifically, the changes that we are referring to as being "undergone" here are not changes in circumstances, but changes in some sense within the character in question -- changes in insight or understanding or changes in commitment, in values.  The change at stake in this distinction is a change "in" the character of the character. In the stories a soilders home by Ernest Hemmingway and A Good Man is Hard to find by Flannery O connor we see this occur. Many people worry about what happens during war but no one realizes what happens to the young people coming back from war. The young people that go to war will change them dramatically when they come back. In the short story “Soldier’s Home”, by E. Heimingway, he writes about a young man’s after war experience, returning home and into society. In another short story called “Speaking of Courage”, by Tim O’Brien, he too, explores the after effects of war and how it can impact a young person’s life. The short stories, “Soldier’s Home”, by E. Heimingway and “Speaking of Courage”, by Tim O’Brien are more differences than similarities. There are a lot of similarities between the two stories. First of all, both of the stories share the some theme. The theme of both stories is, war makes people engaged at...

Women in War

...During the American civil war lots of men where forced into the battlefield. They had to obey orders. Several men very killed, other turned into cold-blooded murders. Men who used to be good working fathers, where thrown into the war. ”The thing you want” is a short story written by Jack Trammell. The short story deals with the topics; war, desire, madness and power. It pictures a man after the war and the consequences of his participation in the American civil war. The short story is told though a third person narrator and he is using past tense. “At that moment someone else entered the room. Cabe had the sixth sense common to survivors of war…” At some points in the text the third-person narrator seems omniscient, because we have access to the characters feelings and mind. “They assumed it was abandoned…” “No one asked any questions. Something inside of him was dead, though, and at the same time, a tiny spark was flickering.” There is used direct speech in the story “,,Looking for food, sir” ,, You won’t find it in her dress, Private”” This narrative mode gives a “filmic-twist” to the story, because we often connect direct speech with manuscripts. The short story starts in medias res and takes place in the real world, in continuation of the Great War (WW1). It elapses chronological and lasts no longer than 1 hour in the “great brick house”. The language is formal and very describing. “A withered, languorous old woman stared at them blankly.” The sentences are very...

Symbolism And Allusions In Harrison Bergeron

...A heart symbolizes love as white symbolizes purity. Without symbolism stories wouldn’t be as deep or interesting as many are today. Along with symbolism, allusions really help when creating a fascinating story. The short stories named “Harrison Bergeron” , ‘2BR02B” , and “The Lottery consists of many symbolism and allusions. To begin with, the short story Harrison Bergeron written by Kurt Vonnegut symbolizes many dark history moments. For example, the handicapper general symbolizes a dictator whom we can allud with Adolf Hitler back in World War 2. Symbolism also occurs when Harrison breaks and tears off the handicaps of the most graceful ballerina along with his. As he breaks off the handicaps he is symbolizing freedom. He is breaking free from their so called perfect utopia. Before the tearing of the ballerina’s handicaps, there is a moment when Harrison asks if there is anyone who'd dance with him or break away. At this moment the ballerina rises to her feet volunteering herself, which could...

A Rose For Emily Evaluation Essay

...My nomination for best short story will be “A Rose for Emily” by William Faulkner. The reason I selected this is my interest in the Civil War era. This short story is intriguing by the use of changing the chronological order to hold the reader’s attention. The story is broken into five sections and each section has the reader wondering what Ms. Emily Grierson has done. The use of Homer Barron schemes the reader into believing that the two had fallen in love with each other, even though in the end, Homer was poisoned by Emily. The setting of the short story is the historical Mississippi southern town after the civil war. Emily is the protagonist of the story, while Homer is the antagonist. Homer is a northerner or outsider and is seen in the town as someone trying to take over the town. The third element is the point of view, which is the ghostly view of the narrator of the story (Klien, 2007). The use of the characters, historical setting and point of view provide the reader interest of what the plot will...

The Things They Carried By Tim O Brien: An Analysis

...The Things They Carried, by Tim O’Brien, is a short story written and based on his own experiences and trials that he faced in the Vietnam war. Many people remain skeptical about the authenticity of the story, as the short passage does contain horrid details that make people question if this drama should be considered a documentary rather than a novel. While writing this short story, Tim O’Brien did in fact mean to portray his work as a fictional story while at the same time continue to use detailed description and realism to capture the audience's attention and try to draw them into the actual events in the story. Tim O'Brien's overall goal was not to create a novel or a documentary but instead help portray the hardships of the Vietnam war to the reader by creating a gateway that would allow each person to experience and feel the burden of the emotional and physical weight on the soldiers who were desperately fighting for their families, countries, and lives. Some of the major themes that are shown in the novel include the terms hardship and baggage. Throughout the story, O’Brien uses the term “baggage” as a symbol to help portray the hardships that these soldiers had to endure day after day throughout the war. As the story goes on it shows not only the literal meaning of what they carried but also symbolically the burdens that...

Why Do I Read

...news and science articles from the internet, and occasional bed time stories with my son. I enjoy reading news rather than watch or listen to news, mainly because it allows me to gather and analyze information from various sources without the filter or the bias of television or radio networks news anchors. In addition to news and various articles I prefer to read short stories. My fascination with short stories began at around age 12 or 13. At the time, since access to television in Iran was very limited. We had to entertain ourselves and being a mischievous child I spent a lot of time in my room (being punished) either listening to radio or reading. My favorite books at the time were horror books. I remember buying these paperback books and reading them cover to cover in two or three days and be scared out of my wits for a few days. I recall at the end of some of these books were teasers about the next story that was due to arrive next. However, at the end of one of the books there was a short story by Edgar Allan Poe titled “The Cask of Amontillado”, I read that story several times and every time I found something new that I Had missed previously. That was the reason I got interested in short stories. My fascination with short stories always have been with a given writers ability to develop main characters, , story plot, and a that in novels might take chapters to develop, in a page or two. The stories are rich in content and packed with symbolisms that requires multiple...

Reaist Essay

...human history the Artist weren't depended on just drawing what the world looked like. They could leave the world of perfect drawing and pursue a different aspect of art. The realist movement didn't just help artist, it helped authors. Authors didn't have to write about romance, or fictional. Author could just be realistic. they did not need elaborate settings, weird/ attention grabbing stories. they wrote simple stories with extraordinary detail which made the story that much more better. Count Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy also known as Leo Tolstoy, was a Russian writer who primarily wrote novels and short stories. Tolstoy was a master of realistic fiction and is widely considered one of the world's greatest novelists. He is best known for two long novels, War and Peace (1869) and Anna Karenina (1877). Tolstoy first achieved literary acclaim in his 20s with his semi-autobiographical trilogy of novels, Childhood, Boyhood, and Youth (1852-1856) and Sevastopol Sketches (1855), based on his experiences in the Crimean War. 3 questions is another master piece that Leo Tolstoy created. The story starts out with king that wanted to know the answer to three simple questions: What was the right time for every action, who were the most necessary and how he might know what was the most important. the king promised anyone who could this question would get a great reward. many people gave the kind different answer that he did not like. he dismissed the idea of any man answering his question...
