...Case on- US Airways Cost Structure US Airways Corporation (formerly US Air) was formed with the merger of several diverse regional airlines including Allegheny Airlines, Mohawk Airlines, Lake Central Airlines, Pacific Southwest Airlines and Piedmont Airlines. The mergers that ultimately led to the establishment of US Airways did not come without difficulties. US Airways possesses a diverse fleet of aircraft, unlike the much more successful Southwest Airlines, which flies only one type of plane, the Boeing 737. US Airways’ diversity results in higher costs of maintenance and crew training and in a much more complex crew scheduling problem.Because of the traditionally week competition in its Northeast market stronghold, US Airways had the highest yield in the airline industry in 1993. The combination of high yields and very high costs per available seat mile invited competition. With the cloud of a potential bankruptcy hanging over it, US Airways looked for ways to control its costs in order to restore its financial health. Cost control is a difficult problem in any corporation. It is, however, especially difficult in a capital-intensive industry such as this. Case on- Rising Marginal Cost of 747s Boeing and Airbus provide all the wide-bodied jets the world needs. Boeing 747, 767 and 777s typically have a 60-70 percent share of the worldwide market, but Airbus accepted the majority of the new orders in 1994-1995 and doubled their output rate from 126 to 232 planes per year...

...A Good Night’s Sleep It’s a short story written by Brian McCabe about a teacher called Lockhart, who lives on third floor of a tenement building in Edinburgh. He is an insomniac, which is sleeplessness, that’s one problem, but what makes the problem even worse is that his neighbors make a lot of noise, especially the old man from the apartment upstairs and the couple that lives next to him. One night he cannot fall asleep, because he as mentioned before is an insomniac, and then he hears something bumping softly against his door. He is lying, thinking about lots of stuff that night, for example is he thinking about the time where he was young and was going to parties and having fun, and then he’s having troubles figuring out a subject for the nxt mornings discussion with his class. Later that night he walked out to check what it was that was making the noise against his door, and found out that a homeless girl was sitting in his staircase. He talked with her, and asked her to sleep in his son’s bed, but she refused. Later that night came his neighbor couple home from a pub or something, and then they kicked her out of the staircase. Later Lockhart lay in his bed, and could not stop thinking about her, and then he suddenly heard the noise again and knew she was there. The story takes place in Lockharts apartment, and in the staircase outside his apartment in Edinburgh, late at night. Lockhart, the main character is an average man living a almost normal life. He has an apartment...

... Moore Housing Contractors is negotiating a deal with Country Realtors to build six houses in a new development. Countryside wants Moore Contractors to start in late winter or early spring when the weather begins to moderate and build on through the summer into fall. The summer months are an especially busy time for the realty company, and it believes it can sell the houses almost as soon as they are ready, and sometimes even before. The houses all have similar floor plans and are of approximately equal size; only the exteriors are noticeable different. The completion time is so critical for Countryside Realtors that they are insisting that a project management network accompany the contractor’s bid for the job with an estimate of the completion time for a house. The realtor also needs to be able to plan its offerings and marketing for the summer. They want each house to be completed within 45 days after it is started. If a house is not completed within the time frame they want to be able to charge the contractor a penalty. Mary and Sandy Moore, the president and vice-president, respectively, of Moore Contractors, are concerned about the prospects of a penalty charge. They want to be very confident that they can meet the deadline for a house before they enter into any kind of agreement with a penalty involved. (If there is a reasonable likelihood that they cannot finish a house within a 45 days they want to increase their bid to cover potential penalty charges.) ...

...Hamilton Hotel stands its ground in South Laredo, Downtown at an appalling twelve stories high. The hotels prominent location, stylistic beauty, and the community’s determination to keep it preserved uphold the building to a high degree of architectural and historical integrity. Taking a walk through downtown, towards the esteemed Hamilton hotel is as if taking a stroll through history. Right across from the hotel is a pharmacy and a neighboring building that are only a few years younger. On the front, right corner, lays the Jarvis plaza and on its left is the U.S. Post Office/ Court House edifice. The Hamilton hotel is situated smack in the middle of all these historical landmarks. The favorable route is through the Jarvis Plaza and the U.S. Post Office/Court House. It is two o’clock in the afternoon and the sun is out with no mercy, but the green-leafed, willowed trees surrounding the court house provide a sufficient amount of shade. There’s very little commotion. No yelling or running, only pedestrians sitting on benches and taking in the pretty view. At the end of the pathway, on its right, is a sign reminding everyone to cross only at the cross walks. On the left of the pathway, is a fire hydrant whose red paint is chipping off and is leaving an uncovered patchwork of yellow. More significant is the Hamilton hotel at the front of the path. The hotel features a Spanish Renaissance Revival...

...Mental Health Experience Mental Health can be defined as a state of emotional and psychological well being in which an individual is able to use his or her cognitive and emotional capabilities, function in society and meet the ordinary demands of everyday life. (The American Heritage Dictionary. 2009) With that being said, as nurses, we work with many mental health patients. Working in home health has given me the opportunity to work closely in the home of some very “mental” patients. One in particular is M.M. She is a 62-year-old female that lives in a low-income apartment in Harriman, TN. She has been diagnosed with depression and schizophrenia. She attends Ridgeview outpatient clinic weekly and gets all of her medications thru them. The nurse at the outpatient clinic sets up her medications in zip lock bags for three times a day, dosage and labels each individually morning, noon and night and the dates as well. I was called in to perform lab work and to provide educational teaching regarding the medications and to monitor if the meds were being taken right. My first call to the patient was to introduce myself and inform her that I would be coming to visit her and what time I would be there. When I arrived at her apartment she was waiting for me in a chair outside of the building. She led me to her apartment and was fairly quite at first. Her apartment was small but very clean. She was very proud of her apartment and showed me around. I explained to her what I...

...March 10 2014 Living in a house is far better than living in an apartment Living in a house opens up doors that are not available in an apartment. One advantage is the choice of people I have to interact with. When I lived in an apartment just to take the trash out I would have to put on shoulder pads and mow down 8 kids just to get there. As opposed to in my home I don’t have to leave if I choose not to. I am fully independent with all my amenities at my fingertips. Another perk is the space we have as opposed to in an apartment, I was forced to share a wall with someone so if I chose to have company or play my music there would be an overweight security guard knocking on my door hassling me to turn it down. By owning my own home now I sort of feel like my own boss in the sense that I am not regulated by the manager of an apartment. The only rules I have to abide by are my own. I also feel overall safer with my family, and the environment is much more peaceful to relax in. Where as in my apartment I felt if I wanted time outside it would take a pair of head phones and a blindfold to relax. I guess the best thing about a home is coming home at night and not having to to see a bunch of people who have their own agenda and could care less if I had a long day or that I just want to get ton my parking spot that has more than likely occupied by someone else while as in my house I pull in my garage and I’m done. Now don’t get me wrong I understand...

...Applicable Housing in China Abstract The paper is about the research of applicable housing in China. It explains the definition of the applicable housing. There are some data of the research and the main problems that this kind of house meet in China at present. I also will talk about my opinion about whether applicable housing should be continued and how to make the applicable housing really help the low-income families. Applicable Housing is very special in Chinese real estate transactions. It is a government policy that provides the low-income families a house in a low price so that everyone can live in their own house. It began in 1994. It means as the development of Chinese real estate economy, there are still some Chinese can’t buy houses even though more and more Chinese can afford to buy their own house. Wealth is not evenly distributed in China. As one online dictionary said, establishing the housing supply system mainly with the economical and applicable housing was fit for the market economy of socialist and current circumstance of China. The target of applicable housing is very good. But the fact is that it works not very well. Some real estate developers haven’t built and sold the building that meet the standards of Applicable Housing while they enjoy the treatment of this government policy. As the result, here comes many problems, such as the price is much higher, the buyer is not the poor and so on. Here are some data from the research about applicable...

...places (homes) for the employees in which they could live in. Hence, saving the employees money, which some of the Disney employees did not make very much. For example; “Custodians make $23,000.00 a year and Attendants make only $14,000.00 a year.” But, the cost of a “one bedroom apartment was $1,400.00 a month.” So, it would benefit the employees to have SunCal build affordable places to live. But, on the other hand Disney makes their stand too. By building on property that was deemed to be set aside for later projects, it would not be a good move for Disney to turn loose of the land. Also, it would reduce the value of the property in the surrounding area because it would be lower income housing. For example; by building these houses it would lower the value on the existing properties in the area in which the median home price in the community was more than $600,000.00. So, there was a factor of the surrounding properties loosing value. There are a few solutions to this situation. The first would be for Disney to give their employees a raise. That way the employees would be able to afford a nicer place to live and closer to their place of employment. The second would be to offer up another piece of land, maybe one that is not right next to Disney. But, there is also another part to this, rather than calling it low income housing. Why not work together and try to come up with an idea for housing that would be up to the approval of Disney and SunCal. For example;...

...acute housing shortage with a deficit of over 1 million housing units in the midst of rapid population growth and rising urban population. It is common knowledge that the Housing deficit in Ghana now stands well over one (1) million houses. To address this deficit and accommodate new households, there is the need for an annual delivery of about 150,000 units for the next 20 years. GREDA PROBLEM DEFINITION The rate of construction of homes for a number of reasons has fallen behind the growth of population in general and the number of people entering the working class. This has created a big deficit in the country's housing delivery system, particularly in the urban centers. Needs assessment survey conducted in the housing sector in the 2000's was conclusive that the ideal housing properties on high demand are 2-4 bedroom houses in view of the large family size they tend to have. The trend in population growth coupled with the rising cost of building materials has shot up the prices of houses and rent chargeable is exorbitant. The size of the market for residential properties is large as it covers Ghanaian national's resident abroad. The general consensus is that the houses constructed are of poor quality and the finishing fall short of the dream houses that potential homeowners are looking for. Lack of low-income housing compared to demand, the absence of private sector participation, and deficiencies in financing arrangements have made it difficult for ordinary Ghanaians to access...

...NEW YORK – The homeless man lay face down, unmoving, on the sidewalk outside an apartment building, blood from knife wounds pooling underneath his body. One person passed by in the early morning. Then another, and another. Video footage from a surveillance camera shows at least seven people going by, some turning their heads to look, others stopping to gawk. One even lifted the homeless man's body, exposing what appeared to be blood on the sidewalk underneath him, before walking away. It wasn't until after the 31-year-old Guatemalan immigrant had been lying there for nearly an hour that emergency workers arrived, and by then, it was too late. Hugo Alfredo Tale-Yax — who police said was stabbed while intervening to help a woman being attacked — had died. "I think it's horrific," said Marla Cohan, who teaches at P.S. 82, a school across the street from where Tale-Yax died. "I think people are just afraid to step in; they don't want to get involved; who knows what their reasons are?" Tale-Yax was walking behind a man and a woman on 144th Street in the Jamaica section of Queens around 6 a.m. April 18 when the couple got into a fight that became physical, according to police, who pieced together what happened from surveillance footage and interviews with area residents. Tale-Yax was stabbed several times when he intervened to help the woman, NYPD spokesman Paul Browne said. She and the other man fled in different directions, and Tale-Yax pursued the man before collapsing. Authorities...

...Webb Mullin Mrs. Nugent English II September 18, 2012 Contents of a Dead Man’s Pocket Jack Finney starts off the story with Tom Benecke sitting at a desk in the living room of his eleventh floor apartment, typing a memo for work. His wife Clare is preparing to go to the movies alone. With difficulty, Tom opens a stubborn window, and a gust of wind blows his paper out of the window onto a ledge. We see how Finney casually introduces that his apartment is on the eleventh floor of the building, in the great city of New York. Before you even begin reading the story, you get an eerie feeling just from the title of the short story. Then when you begin to read the story, and he introduces the setting and the 11th floor apartment so nonchalantly, you begin to get a feeling of suspense. Finney continues on with Tom seeing Clare off, and him explaining he must work rather than go with her, in the hopes of bettering himself at work. While the door to the apartment is open for Clare to leave, a current of air from the hallway enters the apartment. It blows a sheet of paper out the window, landing it on a ledge below, out of his reach. The paper contains all the data Tom needs for his memo proposing a new grocery-store display method. ]He reasons it would be simple to retrieve the sheet of paper from the ledge, compared to all the work he has put into it. At this point in the story, things begin to pick up, building the sense of suspense. Now that we know he is going to go out onto...
