A hero is someone who is admired for their courage, has achieved outstanding accomplishments throughout their life or their noble qualities, such as honesty and loyalty. At an early age we were taught that Christopher Columbus was a hero, that he sailed across the Atlantic ocean and found a new world with people who were already living there. He was also considered a hero because he brought back some of the natives, and gold for the King and Queen of Spain, who sponsored his expeditions. The most prudent position for me is Columbus is not a hero, because he enslaved the natives, used violence against them, and murdered the ones who didn’t obey him.

In Howard Zinn’s book ‘Columbus and Western Civilization’ he wrote that Columbus didn’t not attain that much gold to send to sway the King and Queen and his Spanish financiers. Instead Columbus sent them slaves, he rounded up approximately 1,200 natives, selected 500, these natives were jammed together and was sent across the Atlantic ocean. 200 natives died on the voyage across the Atlantic ocean, because of cold and sickness. In Columbus's journal, an entry from September 1498, said that some might say the only reason to sell slaves were for the Holy Trinity. What Bartolomé de Las Casas saw in the Americas was horrifying, for sport the soldiers would be stabbing the natives, or be dashing babies heads on rocks. When the natives did resist the soldiers would hunt them down, equipped with killing with horses, rifles and vicious dogs. If the natives ever took something that belonged to the spaniards, they were beheaded, or burned at stake. In 1519 Las Casas and a group of Dominican friars (a man who dedicates his life to God) addressed the Spanish monarchy hoping the government would plead the indescribable atrocities.
