Waste Management, Inc. has grown to be the single largest waste handling company in the world. Data has shown that each person accumulates 4.5 pounds worth of trash each day (p35). Over time, Waste Management has seen a gradual environmental change in their customers. Corporations and households are greatly reducing the waste that they accrue. The main question Waste Management must ask themselves is this: How can our company combat the changes that our industry is currently going through? Waste Management must thoroughly examine their internal and external environmental analysis, along with a detailed SWOT analysis.

Waste Management’s internal culture must have a clear vision for what the company stands for. Does the company want to focus on recycling? Landfill dumps? Zero waste? A combination? What ever it may be, Waste Management’s upper management must be able to adapt to their internal environment to make these tough decisions. One option, as the case described, send upper and middle level managers to a program that teaches the fundamentals in business. The upper management must realize that without the company employees, and clear communication, Waste Management is inadequate. Have an open discussion with all employees to determine what can be improved on within the company culture.

Waste Management’s external environmental analysis shows a trend with customers wanting to recycle, sort at landfills, and ultimately, wanting zero waste. Waste Management is known for their mass land fills, so if they want to compete with companies like Subaru, which has a zero landfill plant, they need to think outside the box scan the environment. So how can Waste Management compete with the other competition? Easy. Listen to the customers. If the company notices an increase in household or company recycling, it is in the best interest for both parties that the company

Waste Management Scandal

...Waste Management, Inc. is the nation's largest waste collector (Feder). In other words, they collect and recycle garbage. They are a known brand and dominate the regions of the country and Canada where they provide services. Grownups and kids alike see their trucks and think, "Garbage". Which could sound awful, but garbage is lucrative. In the early 1990's, Waste Management, instead of just picking up the garbage, provided garbage to their investors in the form of an accounting scandal which cost investors approximately $6 billion (Bloomberg News) and was described by Thomas C. Newkirk, associate director of the SEC's Division of Enforcement as "one of the most egregious accounting frauds we have seen" (SEC). What Mr. Newkirk is describing is a long-standing policy by those at the top of the executive rung at Waste Management to provide their auditors, auditing committee, and the public false and misleading numbers in a variety of ways. First, these highest level executives would set earnings targets without regard to current or recent past results. They would then manipulate the numbers to match the previously set targets. Why? They wished to show tremendous growth in their business which would enrich them personally as they kept their jobs regardless of actual results. They also reaped the benefit of higher bonuses and increased income as they sold off their personal shares of the company at market prices which did not reflect the actual company results. It would be akin...

Historical Research on Waste Management

...Historical Research on Waste Management Sean Depkin Jones International University Abstract Waste management is a necessary industry and has been traced back to 3000 B.C. It originally started off garbage dumps or landfills and has progressed to recycling facilities and incinerators that produce both heat and energy from the burned waste. It has been influenced by both motorized transportation and the advances in technology. The most influential person in the waste management industry in the U.S. has been Wayne Huizenga, who saw how to take smaller, independent companies and acquire them into the largest company in the industry. He was able to do that by using stock in his company to make the acquisitions instead of taking out loans from the banks. Waste management and corruption have always been associated with one another because of mafia ownership and even accounting debacles. It is a business that really did not take much to get into other than some capital and transportation. With the decline of available resources and the demand for fewer issues with hazardous waste, an advanced college degree has been necessary to get into management or in the design of the facilities and treatment of waste. Some countries such as Denmark have even advanced as far as to only use their landfills for about 6% of their waste, recycling and incinerating the rest (Buch-Andersen, 2005). Because of booming populations and economies, as well as the planet running out of room for...

Business Ethics

...TideeKleen Waste Management Inc. (TK) has been regarded as a leader in corporate citizenship within the Canadian commercial waste recycling and disposal sector, with a strong reputation for social and environmental responsibility. The company’s workers are unionized, well-paid, and enjoy a generous health benefits package and defined-benefit pension plan. Unfortunately, TK has been in a financial and reputational slump of late, and its stock price has been sagging. TK operates several facilities for sorting and processing solid waste (some of which, such as fluorescent tubes and electronic devices, containing potential hazardous components). Its newer facilities are state-of-the-art: high-tech, largely automated, and very safe for both workers and the environment. These new facilities employ a small, mostly young and highly skilled work force. They are very profitable. The older facilities are approaching the end of their functional lifespans, and the company will need to replace their capacity in order to continue to fulfill their contracts with waste generators. Many of the workers at the older facilities are themselves older and are approaching retirement. One of the older facilities, though complying with the relevant industry and regulatory standards of the day, has turned out to have contaminated its site with certain toxic substances. The Ministry of the Environment has issued a clean-up order for the site and technical consultants have informed management that the...

Egypt

...Egypt is home to the largest Middle Eastern population and is also the home of a large young population. With this significant young and skilled labor workforce, and high GDP growth potential, Egypt appears to have substantial opportunities for businesses. But with current political revolution and the resignation of President Hosni Mubarak, how will Egypt’s economy be affected, and how should businesses respond? What industries and businesses are best to invest in? Section 1: Business Opportunities Although Egypt has a stable currency, low external debt, and a stable banking sector, the political instability and corruption from the past has hurt the current Egyptian economy. According to the Associated Press, “About 40 percent of Egypt's population of 80 million people lives on or below the World Bank's 2 dollars per day poverty benchmark. Corruption is rife and Egyptians have accused Mubarak's business friends and fellow power brokers of robbing the country blind for years through the privatization process, sweetheart business deals, cut-rate prices for state lands and other kickbacks that came with the trappings of power (What the Future Holds for the Egyptian Economy). Certain industries, in particular tourism, have been beaten by the affects of protests as foreigners fled the country. But, with Mubarak’s resignation, “businesses and consumers” should be convinced “that the turmoil of the past few years is over and that it is once again safe to invest, spend, hire and...

Bio Reactor Landfill - an Overview

...Solid Waste Management: An Overview Of Bioreactor Landfills Anusha John#, Ajay kumar K#, Abdul Shiyas M A#, Sreenath H# Department of Chemical Engineering, National Institute of Technology Calicut NIT Campus P O, PIN 673601, Kerala 1manjalyjohn@gmail.com 2ajaykumar@nitc.ac.in 3shiyas2003@yahoo.co.in 4srinad@gmail.com Abstract--- A landfill is a site for the disposal of waste materials by burial and is one of the most common methods of solid waste management in various parts of the world. Significant environmental and economic benefits can be gained by making small changes in the way the landfills are operated. Bioreactor landfill is a promising biotechnological option for faster stabilization of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW). It changes the goal of landfilling from the storage of waste to the treatment of waste. In a bioreactor landfill environment, the solid waste actively decomposes rather than being simply buried in a dry tomb. This active decomposition is possible because over half the MSW is comprised of organic material (food, paper, etc.), which will decompose fairly rapidly under the right conditions. Rather than being kept dry, the solid waste is actively moistened by injecting leachate into the landfilled solid waste to accelerate decomposition. The anaerobic conditions in a conventional landfill can be replaced with aerobic conditions by introducing air into the solid waste and thus enhancing the biological process. Studies show that a bioreactor landfill...
