I believe that the movie “The Martian” accurately represented life on Mars. The details of the landscape and environment, strategies used to travel in space, and calculations involved in space travel were definite and factual. The depiction of the atmosphere and environment of Mars was accurate. There were several impact craters and red soil that was inhospitable to life on the planet. Mars also has unpredictable weather; Ares 3 had to have an emergency evacuation of Mars because of an extremely violent sandstorm that was likely to destroy the equipment and housing they had set up. Mars’ extremely low pressure makes it a hazard for humans as well. A pressure stabilizer is necessary to ensure that the body can adjust to the different pressures …show more content…
Hermes cannot enter Mars’ orbit without using more fuel to reach orbital velocity. Thus, the MAV has to escape Mars’ gravity in order to intercept with Hermes. In order for the MAV to escape Mars’ atmosphere, it has to reach the escape velocity. To do this, they had to make the MAV lighter to go faster with the limited amount of fuel available on the spacecraft. They said that they needed to make the spacecraft 5,000 kg lighter in order for the MAV to get to a high enough velocity to intercept with Hermes. Using the equation M_1 V_1=M_2 V_2, you can derive the final equation V_2=M_1 V_1/M_2. This means that the final velocity (V_2) is inversely related to the final mass (M_2). Thus, decreasing the final mass would increase the final velocity. To find the escape velocity of Mars, we use the equation v_escape=√ ((2GM_planet)/R_planet ). The escape velocity is 5.03 km/s. Assuming the initial mass is 10,000kg and the final mass is 5,000kg lighter (5,000kg), we can calculate the initial velocity using the equation V_1=M_2 V_2/M_1=5,000kg × 5.03km/s÷10,000kg= 2.5km/s. This is accurate because 2.5km/s is far below the necessary escape velocity for the MAV. Thus, decreasing the final mass should increase the final

What Is Mark Watney's Failure

...When planning, preparation, redundancies and contingencies fail, Mark Watney uses creativity to overcome challenges and stay alive. A problem that Mark faces is not enough food which is solved by planting crops. Mark’s faceplate broke, so he repairs it with his arm sleeve. A final problem that he deals with is a leak, which is solved by burning his hair. The first thing that failed was Mark being left of Mars. This was not the fault of the crew but this brought a lot of challenges for Watney. The first challenge is that Mark does not have enough food. The Ares 3 mission was supposed to last the 6 crew members 31 days. Enough food was provided for each person to last over 50 days. Since he is left on Mars for a much longer period of time, he...

The Martian Synopsis

...comedic botanist and now-astronaut Mark Watney as his mission on the planet Mars goes awry and his 5 crewmates evacuate after a severe storm. Debris slams into Mark and his suit is punctured, so they decide to abandon him behind, assumed dead. But luckily enough, a series of events lead to Mark’s survival against all the odds Mars could throw at him. Personal Response: The Martian is a believable novel dense with scientific explanation but with no shortage of hilarious quips and witty dialogue. Developing the plot of Mark’s Martian mission of survival, I can best describe Andy’s work as a slow escalation to a gripping climax. An insightful look at the...

The Red Planet: A Trip To Mars

...Mars, also known as the “Red Planet”, is Earth’s closest neighbor, which is 225 million kilometers away. A trip to Mars would take 4-6 months. If a trip to Mars is successful as planned, the human would face many different challenges, and troubles. A number of troubles include that they would have to wear a full body suit because Mars's atmosphere is too thin, nevertheless humans would also face the possibility of running low on supplies, while it is possible to grow food with the soil on Mars (desolate) plants would have to be grown inside greenhouses. Consequently water will be a massive problem because of our feeble primitive bodies, we cannot, and will not survive without water running through our bodies. The movie Martian contains many...

Ridley Scott's Alien, Prometheus

...Interstellar and off-world tales are fully engrained in the fabric of entertainment. As consumers, we ingest wide variations of outer space fiction – with the most popular and obvious examples being Star Wars and Star Trek. But, space exploration isn’t always about alien encounters or laser-themed weapon. Sometime it’s simply brings out the finer qualities of humanity. In Ridley Scott’s (Alien, Prometheus) latest directing effort, based on the novel (of the same name) by Andy Weir, Matt Damon stars as Mark Watney – an astronaut that’s stranded on Mars alone when his crew is forced to abandon him after an accident leads them to believe he’s dead. But, it turns out Mark is very much alive. N.A.S.A. also believes Mark to be decease, although...
