Civil Rights Diary - Watts Riots
Sunday August 15, 1965: It has been a few days since I last wrote in my diary. It has been very busy around the entire city of Las Angeles. It started on Wednesday August 11th. I had just got home from working at the Douglas Outlet Co. and was looking forward to writing in my diary about the raise I got from my boss. Then I heard my neighbor Ronald yelling for his mom. He was yelling, “Mom they are going to take the car and Marquette.” I went outside and saw a large amount of people, more than I could count, running down the street toward Avalon Blvd. When I got to the corner of 116th street and Avalon Blvd, I saw Marquette, Ronald’s brother getting a yelling at from his mother Rena Price. Then it started to get wild!
Somehow Rena got pushed and Marquette got hit by someone. The policemen started to fight with Marquette and Ronald and their mother Rena jumped on the backs of the policemen. By this time, the crowd had doubled or tripled in size. The crowd was not happy about the situation. It took about five minutes for the police to put all three of my neighbors under arrest. Once they had them in the back of the police car, they left as fast as they could. There were still a couple of policemen there, and they went to leave but the crowd started to hurl rocks and bricks at their car as they left. The policemen stopped the car and went to arrest another women and man for throwing the bricks at their car. By the time that arrest was over the crowd was out of control and started to riot.
That night the rumors spread all-around Los Angeles, “The police beat and kicked a pregnant woman and then took her to jail.” The story seemed to get worse the farther away it traveled. There was riots starting in neighboring cities such as Long Beach 12 miles south of Watts, San Pedro-Wellington also 12 miles away, Pasadena 12 miles north and more than 100 miles away in San Diego (McCone, 1965). The worst of the rioting was in the Watts neighborhood. The riots went on that night until around three am. The police stood by to make sure it was not too out of control.
On Thursday the Police called a meeting with some of the Negro leaders in the area. They wanted help from the Negro leaders to prevent further rioting, looting, and burning of buildings. I heard that during the meeting one of the high school students took the microphone and stated that the rioting will push further into the neighboring white communities. From that point on the meeting failed and the news stations relayed the words of the high school student all over the country, which started the rioting all over again. There were small groups of rioters on every block. They started to pull white people out of their cars and would beat them. They started to burn buildings and stole everything from baby seats to televisions. I could not figure out why the police were not out in a bigger force. I was getting scared as everyone seemed to be fighting for different reasons. It was another late night but I managed to fall asleep to all the gun shots and yelling going on around my house.
Friday came and I hoped that the rioting was over. The crowds never seemed to go away. The police called in the California National Guard to help with the rioting (McCone, 1965). I think this just made everyone mad. Friday became the worst day of all (McCone, 1965). The rioters were throwing Molotov cocktails into building on Central Avenue and Broadway St. The fire fighters would attempt to fight the fire but people would shoot at them and prevent them from putting the fires out. The police would try to put up barricades to prevent the rioters from fighting back against the fire fighters, allowing them to fight some fires. Then the police became the target, and the rioters would throw fire bombs at the police. The rioting went all day and all night. Finally, the police along with the National Guard started to make some headway against the rioters.
The rioting started to slow down and spread out of the Watts neighborhood on Saturday. The riots started to get smaller and smaller and farther apart. The rioting took place in different parts of town such as Long Beach and Monrovia. Finally, Sunday the riots were mostly over. The Watts neighborhood looked like a war zone. There was National Guard troops patrolling the streets, and there was a curfew in force. There is no power at my house all day. My mother and I had to go to my Uncles house to see the news stories about the rioting. The news stated that there were a total of 34 people killed, including one fire fighter and two policemen. There were 1032 people injured, and the hospitals were full. Of the injured 90 of them were policemen, 136 fire fighters, 10 National Guardsmen, 23 Government agents, and 773 civilians (McCone, 1965). The news predicts over $40,000,000.00 in damage to buildings. The news also stated there was between 2000 and 3000 fire alarms sounded on record (McCone, 1965). Personally I’m glad everything is over. I just want to get back to normal life around here. I talked with my friends and everyone was mad about different stuff. I don’t think the rioters had so much built up anger about everything; they just used it for an excuse to rise up against the government. Well, it’s time for bed. I will write more tomorrow. Good Night!

The Watts Riots

...invites defeat.”-Martin Luther King Jr. The Watts Riots began on the night of August 11, 1965, and lasted until August 16. During this time, 34 people were killed, another 1,032 were injured, and almost 4,000 people were arrested.(Nichols, Casey) The riots were caused by the failed arrest of three members of the Frye family, and a rumor that circulated after their arrests that the police had beat an unarmed pregnant African American woman. While the Fryes were being detained, a large crowd had gathered to watch and police officers that were called in to quell the riots beat, killed, and helped fan the flames of the movement even further into chaos. Almost 14,000 National Guard troops...

The Causes Of The Watts Riots

...Imagine living in the Civil Rights Era where racial tensions between African Americans and White Americans were very high. Your race determined what jobs you could and weren’t allowed to get. If you weren’t dressed nice as an African American restaurants could deny you service. Transportation was much longer since only a few taxi cabs will pick you up if you were African American. Real estate agents would direct you to neighborhoods based on your color of skin. Despite finally achieving equality life was very segregated. This built up anger is one of the few reasons for the cause of the Watts Riots. On August 11, 1965 an African American man by the name of Marquette Frye was arrested for drunk driving by California highway patrolman Lee...

Argumentative Essay: The Watts Riots

...Introduction The Watts Riots were caused by a roadside argument when a black man, Marquette Frye, was arrested for speeding. Frye had been drinking, and was driving with his brother, Ronald, in the car, when the two were pulled over two blocks from their home. While Marquette was being arrested, Ronald retrieved their mother from her house. When Mrs. Frye saw her son being forcibly arrested, she fought with the arresting officers, tearing one officer’s shirt. An officer then struck Marquette’s head with his nightstick, and all three of the Frye’s were arrested. By the time the Frye’s were arrested, hundreds of onlookers had been drawn to the scene. Anger and rumors spread quickly through the black community, and residents stoned cars and beat...

Power Factor Correction Using Boost Converter

...Whitby Hydro Energy Services Corp. Power Factor Correction at the Residential Level – Pilot Project Report to the LDC Tomorrow Fund September 12, 2005 Executive Summary In December of 2004 Whitby Hydro applied for funding from the EDA Tomorrow Fund to carry out a pilot project to determine the impact of installing capacitors at residential homes on system capacitance and generation requirements. The study involved 31 homes within Whitby Hydro’s distribution territory. The houses selected were located in a new residential neighbourhood and were consistent in size, age and type of heating. For the pilot, a bench mark had to be established for the loading of each transformer. The three transformers where metered for a two month period prior to the installation of the capacitors. The information gathered included KW, KVAR, volts and amps. Once the benchmark was established homes fed from two of the transformers where equipped with capacitors providing 3.34 KVAR into there distribution panel. Readings at the transformer continued for an additional two month period after the units were installed in the homes. In addition two homes where equipped with metering devices that allowed the measurement of power factor. The information gathered allowed analysis to be carried out to determine if the additional capacitance improved power factor at the home as well as at the transformer. Power Factor at the transformer was the first value to be analysed. KW and KVAR was measured at 15...

...INTRODUCTION TO POWER FACTOR Your hometown community-owned services provider WHAT IS POWER FACTOR? Low Power Factor in your facility can increase your electricity costs, reduce electrical distribution capacity, cause sluggish motor performance and increase the frequency of voltage drops. That’s why it is important to understand what power factor is and what you can do to improve it. Power factor is an energy concept that is related to power flow in electrical systems. To understand power factor, it is helpful to understand three different types of power in electrical systems. Real Power is the power that is actually converted into useful work for creating heat, light and motion. Real power is measured in kilowatts (kW) and is totalized by the electric billing meter in kilowatt-hours (kWH). An example of real power is the useful work that directly turns the shaft of a motor. Reactive Power is the power used to sustain the electromagnetic field in inductive and capacitive equipment. It is the nonworking power component. Reactive power is measured in kilovolt-amperes reactive (kVAR). Reactive power does not appear on the customer billing statement. Total Power or Apparent power is the combination of real power and reactive power. Total power is measured in kilovolt-amperes (kVA) and is totalized by the electric billing meter in kilovolt-ampere-hours (kVAH). Wyandotte Municipal Service provides generation, transmission...

Changing Your Home for the Better

...“There has been consensus among scientists for years that global warming is a serious problem and that it is caused by human activity” (“Global Warming Solutions A Basics.”, n.d.).I am here to tell you, global warming is a real and serious threat. With the amount of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere the land and ocean temperatures have increased. Over the last 25 years, 11 of the 12 warmest years on record have occurred in the past 12 years. Something needs to be done to change this trend. This is where each and every one of us comes in. You might not think things in your everyday life have an effect on global warming but you are wrong. Here in the Midwest, we are at the center of our global warming problems and can be at the center of our solutions (“Global Warming Solutions A Basics.”, n.d.). Just making relatively small changes in your homes can make a huge impact on global warming if everyone makes similar changes. A new heating and cooling system is one of the biggest upfront costs for a green change, but it has the biggest return as well; in the form of money saved and lessening pollution. “As much as half of the energy used in your home goes to heating and cooling. So making smart decisions about your home's heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) system can have a big effect on your utility bills” (“Heat & Cool Efficiently,” n.d.). Which is why you should start with this change. Although simply replacing your system all together could be the most cost effective...

..., but thinking back on the intro I see there is nothing hooked up in the house; therefore, there is no current. The answer is 0. 2.) What is the voltage drop along the supply wire? To solve you would use the equation V=IR, I is 0; therefore, the voltage drop will also be 0. 3.) What is the amount of power converted to thermal energy (Power loss)? To solve this one, P=IV, I and V are both 0; therefore no power is lost in this Case. My predicted answers were correct in this case. If there is nothing in the house, then no current is flowing through the wires. Exercise 5A, Case 3 Now I’m asked that if I’m using super conducting wires with 0 electrical resistance and we plug in a 100 Watt lamp inside the house: 1.) What is the current through the circuit? I=P/V (100 watts)/(120 volts)= 0.83 Amps 2.) What is the resistance of the lamp? R=V/I (120 volts)/(0.83 amps)= 144.6 Ohms 3.) What is the voltage drop across the lamp? 120 volts 4.) What is the voltage drop across the supply & return wires? There wouldn’t be a voltage drop along the wires because they have zero resistance. The voltage drop would only occur at the lamp. My predicted answers were correct in this case also. Exercise 5A, Case 4 I’m given...

...power rating in watts of your devices. After you find the power rating in kilowatt hour. To find this you divide the power rating in watts by 1000. After you find how much time you use this device and find the total of minutes and then you convert minutes to hours (divide by 60) Lastly you find the cost per kWh. The equation to find the cost per kWh is power x time x rate. You will record this for 5 days and then add all the cost per kWh and this is how you find the total cost for a week. To find the total cost of operating these devices for a year, you take the total cost of one week for each device and multiply that by 52 because there are 52 weeks in a year. (2016) 4. Referring to my own energy audit information, these are the ways I can reduce my families hydro/electricity bill. First of all, when I'm using the hair dryer, I should only blow dry my hair for less amount of time because I can leave the rest of my hair to air dry and this might reduce the cost because I am using less energy. The next way I can reduce energy is when I leave my room, I should turn off my room lights. I usually have a habit of leaving the lights on as I go from room to room. The last way I can reduce my families electricity bill is at night I should unplug my phone from my charger. Phones only take about one to two hours to charge but sometimes I forget to unplug it and it ends up charging all night. 5. Fan 75 Watts Curling iron 90 Watts Radio 100 Watts Blender 110...

...faculty/student committee and their allocation of funds. The issue at hand is that four different groups(a predominantly white religious group, LGBT group, African American group, and Hispanic group- no other groups are mentioned) that represent students on campus are vying for funds to be allocated to them for their specific speaker. Because the LGBT group seemingly presented a better platform for their speaker, they received the majority of the money. The African American and Hispanic groups received less money. The predominantly white religious group was not mentioned as receiving money; however, a white group was mentioned as being at the riot and looking for a reason to loot and vandalize. The issue seems to have the following possibilities as to why the riot is happening: 1) racial/ethnic tensions already happening on campus seem to help spark the riot when certain groups did not get the money they wanted 2) the issue could also stem from a sexuality issue as the LGBT group received the majority of the money, yet the other groups are listed by race, the campus could have problems with sexuality and have issues with accepting 3) pride could...

Detailed Account of the Burma Riot

..."Burma Road” has been described as the very first sign of a popular movement in the Bahamas, and in the 1988 memoir of Randol Fawkes (The Faith that Moved the Mountain), he features the birth of the labor movement to the 1942 riots: "As long as Fort Fincastle rests on that immovable rock in our capital city," he marked, "parents shall tell their children, and their children shall tell their own of the saga of Burma Road." For most of the Bahamians Burma Road refers to the 1942 riots over pay for the men who worked on the wartime air bases in Nassau. Two rioters were killed by the British troops, more than 40 people were incapacitated and hundreds were arrested, but those unmatched events also led to long overdue transformations. Explosives were used to puncture through the limestone hills behind the caves to provide fill for the new airfield. But there are more important parallels between what is going on in Burma today, and what took place in the Bahamas 65 years ago. In those days it was illegal for employees to “pool “against their employer. But when the airfield project began mopping up some of Nassau's unemployment, two proto unions came together to form the Bahamas Federation of Labor, which Fawkes later led. As a teenager he recalled the events of June 1, 1942: "When we reached the corner of Marlborough and Cumberland streets we heard a large shout. On looking toward the hilltop we saw hundreds of ragged black workers moving downhill towards us.. Some walked swiftly, blowing...
