Abstract This paper examines the need for labeling of genetically-modified foods, of GM foods, by researching significant nutritional differences found in conventional and GM foods, long-term studies on the impact on human health, and compounding effects on the environment caused by creating a non-naturally occurring species. In finding no significant nutritional advantages, a lack of evidence to disprove studies on adverse effects on human health, and potentially detrimental effects on the environment, it is believed that the consumer has a right to be informed of the origin or alterations of food made available to them.

...Many years ago, the buzz-phrase “You are what you eat” appeared everywhere. The saying reminded us that the foods we eat break down into elements that our bodies absorb. What we eat becomes part of us. This premise rings true in our non-physical selves as well—the reading, listening, and viewing material we ingest becomes a part of our being. Our physical health requires consistent nourishment of foods and drink; likewise successful living depends on constant nourishment. The quality of what we ingest affects the quality of our health. Each healthy food has a purpose: some improve our immune systems and help us fight off potential illnesses; some foods boost our energy levels; others build muscles, bones, improve eyesight, and even keep us regular (if you know what I mean). If we plan to hike several miles on a weekend, we can prepare by eating foods that will prolong our energy. If a virus spreads at our workplace, or more seriously, our grandkids are coming to visit, we can boost our immune systems by eating certain foods or taking certain herbs. In times of high activity and stress, we can adjust our food intake to better handle the strain. Fad diet proponents teach their adherents to concentrate intensely on a narrow selection of foods (i.e. grapefruit, high carbs, low carbs, pineapple). Yet nutritionists encourage the balanced eating of foods from each food group. If we need to lose weight, we moderately adjust our food balance in favor of foods low in calories...

...What we put into our bodies is our choice. However, have you ever stopped to think about where the food you buy at the local supermarket comes from? When we think we are eating healthy are we really making the right choices? What about where does the food from the supermarket comes from? How did it get to the supermarket before it made its way into your shopping cart? These are all questions we want to think about when we make food choices. Not only do we want to make right choices but we also want our choices to have a positive outcome on our community. Supermarkets are usually stocked via grocery suppliers or grocery wholesalers. One of my local chain supermarkets, Shaw’s, has different vendors that they use. Their website does not list the different vendors but it has access to their policies and how they choose their vendors. A Consumers International report from July 2012 says that supermarkets buy from suppliers and then sell to consumers. Supermarkets have both retailer and buyer power which means they have influence on both suppliers and consumers. “The more supermarkets buy, the better terms they get. The better terms they get, the more they sell.” (Nicholson, C. & Young, B., 2012). If I were to purchase all the items for my meal, chicken, lemon, rice, mushrooms, greens, almonds, wheat roll, butter, milk, and apple crisp, from Shaw’s Supermarket I would not know where any of my items were being sourced from.
