...Michael Mainor EN106 – First Year Writing Seminar II: Academic Research & Writing Date : April 26, 2012 America vs. the World America the Beautiful, The Home of the Brave, words that we often hear as Americans in our patriotic way of life; however, are we as Americans so egocentric and or narcissistic in our way of life that we project our thoughts and way of life onto other countries in a global sense? As defined by freedictionary.com, to be egocentric is to view things from one’s own point of view as the only right. It also defines narcissistic as to be infatuated and obsessed with one’s self to exclusion of all others in a ruthless pursuit of one’s gratification, dominance, and ambition. There is absolutely nothing wrong with being proud and patriotic Americans. Although most people who live in America can agree that it is a great place to live, we should not project our way of life, as the only right way, onto other countries’ cultures, or people around the world, because when we do we take the risk of being viewed as America vs. the world. In the excerpt, Moral Disagreement, by Kwame Anthony Appiah, he discusses how different perspectives to any situation and or word(s) mean different things to others based on a variety of things: culture, religion, and morals to name a few. Appiah is a native of Ghana and because of his different upbringing and perspective he views things different. For example, “Many married women lived with their brothers, visiting their husbands...

...Part A 1. Story and Plot Story and Plot differ from one another. The total world of the story is made out of “diegetic elements”. These elements (such as characters, events, surroundings, sounds and objects) create the world in which the story takes place. In a television series as Baantjer, there are a lot of diegetic elements which the audience can relate to, whereas in the world of Disney’s Wall-E, there are diegetic elements which the audience can’t relate to because it is a whole other world than we know. A story consists of two types of diegetic elements. Firstly, there are elements that are presented on the screen. Secondly, there are elements which are not presented on the screen, but where the viewer (audience) refers to as something that has happened (presumed and inferred elements). Besides diegetic elements, there are also nondiegetic elements. These elements include for example voice-overs, background music and titles and credits and are part of a plot, but not part of a story. A plot consists, beside the diegetic elements of the world of the story presented on the screen, also of nondiegetic material. Apart from (non)diegetic elements, the story also differs from the plot because of the chronological order. Within a story, every event happens in chronological order, but within a plot, events do not necessarily have to appear in chronological order. In Gran Torino the difference between the story and the plot is immediately visible at the very first scene: Walt...

...Assignment 1 “What it’s like to be a Black Girl” VS “Child of the Americas” Joyce Dolford Eng125: Introduction to Literature Instructor: Karen Lawler 10/06/2012 Assignment 2 10/06/2012 “What it’s like to be a Black Girl” VS “Child of the Americas” The literary works that I decided to compare are “Child of the Americas” by Aurora Levin Morales (A Latino) and “What it’s like to be a Black Girl” by Patricia Smith. (an African American). They were both born in America, which is an important fact because Blacks and other minorities in the U.S. experienced extreme racism and prejudice compared to their peers into the countries. The poems tell how two young girls, from different beliefs. These poems are important because they deal with racism and discrimination issues which occurred prior to the Civil Rights Era and still exist in today world. Although, each of them experienced discrimination their perceptions its effect and how they coped were very different. These two young girls from different American minority sub-cultures, views themselves in a totally different perspectives. One of the young girls wishes to identify herself with the culture and image of her African American ancestor’s slave owners; however the other wishes to embrace and celebrate her African Latino heritage. Assignment 2 10/06/2012 “What It’s like to Be a Black Girl” VS “Child of the Americas” In the poem “What it’s like to be a Black Girl” I believe in the mind of a young black...

...1 Percent vs. General Public Upper class vs. the common people and the effects of the upper class interest to keep power; how well does the 1 percent of America represent my interest? I say it is a 50/50 relationship. They like money and power, and they, would do whatever it takes to keep it, so the decisions keep business as usual helps keep people employed but at the same time business as usual can mean the opposite. Money equals power, and I believe that, there (Americas 1 percent) interest to keep making money and to keep power they would do what’s required to keep our economy going witch mean job security for right now. Job security is something scares right now, and economy is not getting better. When the upper 1 percent of America that’s controls large businesses that employee a majority of our community decide to move to another country to save money that is when we (community) have conflicted interest with the upper 1 percent. Interest and conflict is something happening all too much now a day. America’s general public is not much different from the upper class when it comes to interest. The upper 1 percent wants to make money and so do the general public the only difference is that if the upper 1 percent decides to take their assets to another state let alone another country our general public will end -up with conflict. This is just one of the main reasons our economy is hurting, and our general public unemployment rate has gone up. It is a 50/50 relationship...

...For my Memoir/Literary Review I decided to write about The Body by Stephen King. The themes I want to focus on are the coming of age theme, and innocence vs. experience. Both themes can be seen throughout the entire novel as they boys venture on their journey. The gun that Chris brings with him is a symbol with significant meaning under the innocence vs. experience theme. A particular quote that I see fit to analyze is “Love isn’t soft, like those poets say. Love has teeth which bite and the wounds never close.” This quote works well for both the overarching theme as well as the innocence vs. experience theme, because as you grow older you realize that there is more to love than just hugs and kisses, and with experience you learn of the wounds...

...people in the USA, this occasion was not so brilliant because they absolutely despised the idea of black people joining an all-white school which has been desegregated by the law. This is because of the court case named Brown vs The Board of Education. Carrying on, when the nine black students were entering the school, or trying to enter the school, the white people had created a very large mob and insulted, spat on and harassed the students. Even the schools security guard was not letting the nine students enter. Due to this president Eisenhower sent in 1000 paratroopers to protect the students while going inside the school. This showed that the president was very determined to stop segregation in America. Moreover In my opinion I believe that the events of Little Rock were not the most significant event towards the civil rights campaign. In this piece of writing I will be talking about how: Brown vs The Board of Education; the role of the presidents; Martin Luther King and the Montgomery bus boycotts were all more important in my opinion than the events of Little Rock. In my opinion I believe that the court case ‘Brown vs The Board of Education’ is more vital over the events of Little Rock for many reasons. One very major reason to why I believe ‘Brown vs The Board of Education’ is more significant Is because if Linda Browns case was not taken to court and showed how she trekked to a very far ‘black...

...Key Shapers of the American Education System Jennifer Milam Grand Canyon University: UNV 576 Wednesday September 6, 2012 Key Shapers of the American Education System The historical events that have shaped America and contribute to all that is quintessentially “American” can also be seen in the evolution of our country’s education system. There are many key contributors and events in history that have led up to the education system and the challenges and triumphs that we see today in schools all across America. The most significant theme that runs throughout the evolution of our modern education system is the evolvement of attitudes and philosophies that were at times controversial, but without which, the school system we know today would cease to exist. There are four notable shapers to this evolution of attitudes: John Calvin (1509), John Dewey (1916), Brown vs. the Board of Education (1954), and the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLBA) of 2002. These four shapers mark clear delineations in the purposes and attitudes that have shaped our education system at distinct fork in the roads along the path to today’s school experience in America. John Calvin John Calvin was the leading face and voice of the protestant reformation movement. He, along with Martin Luther of the Lutheran reformation, believed that states should sponsor schools and that the general public deserves to have access to schools. His purpose behind this idea was that every citizen should be able...

...American community and being dark skinned is one that has kept oppression alive from within. One might say that this paper is too offensive or bias because of the use of the African American Culture. It is always negative to speak about racism, dark skin or anything that has to do with the African culture and racism normally in any situation. This has been a tainted subject for quite some time now and it travels all the way from the continent of Africa. This is definitely a form of racism and the rules need to change in order to protect, heal and strengthen not only the black community, but the cultural world as a whole. Nonetheless, the origin of racism began some time ago. The first boat that carried Africans to be enslaved was brought to America in 1619. They were bought here by the White man to trade and use for cleaning, cooking, working in the fields and whatever else was needed. It was a business that was flourishing throughout the world. It is said that slavery started with the Africans in the continent of Africa. Slavery was supposed to be abolished in the 1800s but was a very slow process. Although slavery is far behind us, thankfully, there are still after effects and there is a great deal that lingers behind us and is very apparent within the black community among each other. Often this is perceived as being a trend that has been passed along from the ancestors from Africa. The attitude and consistent use of enslavement that is...

...person can walk down a country road in Podunk Alabama in the middle of the night and not be scared then America is on its way to ending racism. When a whit person can walk down a street in Compton strike that any hood/ghetto in America and not be worried about getting beat up, raped or killed then America is on its way to ending racism. When any other nationality/colored person can walk down a street in a neighborhood where they are not prominent and not get messed with then America is on its way to ending racism. Racism is a global issued America doesn’t solely own the rights to it, people hate people that don’t look like they look or act like they act or talk like they talk. Until everybody is of one color or should I say mixed up enough that a dna test can’t distinguish what’s what the world will have racism. You really can’t find to many people today that are full blooded anything in America. You can place one man in front of a hundred women and tell him he can have anyone he wants to sleep with until he has had them all and believe me he will have them all white, black, yellow, green, blue, orange, cyan and brown and vs verse for a woman as long as all of them are sexually attractive to her she will have them all. Racism is stupid and I hate everybody equally nobody gets left out because we are all human same blood and guts and all that on the inside, some of us just got left in the over to long or just right depends on who you ask. ...Culture and Frameworks Years ago, dealing with another country for a product might have been unusual. In today’s world, businesses are becoming more global in enterprise so in order to be successful it’s important to understand how to “talk” to a business or employee from another country. There are different social and psychological frameworks that can be used to help an organization understand different cultures and to better communicate. Kluckhohn and Strodtbeck developed a sociological framework which is made up of six dimensions: time orientation, space orientation, activity orientation, relationships among people, relations to nature, and basic human nature (Ahlstrom & Bruton, 2010, pp. 44-45). Different cultures will have different emphasis in the six dimensions. For example, the time orientation for people from South America may be vastly different than for people from North America. North Americans are more rigid and South Americans are more flexible when it comes to timing. So if you are given a time for something in North America, you’d better be on time if you don’t want to be rude. In South America, being late is the in thing to be. China and Japan are also very time conscious and the Chinese Business Etiquette Instructional Video shows how the two Americans show up early for their meeting with the Chinese section chief thus exhibiting a positive time orientation example (Liu, 2007). When looking at the Outsourced movie, Mr. Todd appears to be totally...

...Brown v. Board of Education The case of brown v. board of education was one of the biggest turning points for African Americans to becoming accepted into white society at the time. Brown vs. Board of education to this day remains one of, if not the most important cases that African Americans have brought to the surface for the better of the United States. Brown v. Board of Education was not simply about children and education (Silent Covenants pg 11); it was about being equal in a society that claims African Americans were treated equal, when in fact they were definitely not. This case was the starting point for many Americans to realize that separate but equal did not work. The separate but equal label did not make sense either, the circumstances were clearly not separate but equal. Brown v. Board of Education brought this out, this case was the reason that blacks and whites no longer have separate restrooms and water fountains, this was the case that truly destroyed the saying separate but equal, Brown vs. Board of education truly made everyone equal. The case started in Topeka, Kansas, a black third-grader named Linda Brown had to walk one mile through a railroad switchyard to get to her black elementary school, even though a white elementary school was only seven blocks away. Linda's father, Oliver Brown, tried to enroll her in the white elementary school seven blocks from her house, but the principal of the school refused simply because the child was black. Brown went...

...Position Power and Personal Power A View of Leadership vs. Management owner 12/18/2020 GM:591: Leadership and Organizational Behavior Instructor: INTRODUCTION In the past twenty to forty years, the face of corporate America has changed drastically from family owned businesses to conglomerates that absorb smaller businesses by the dozens. Those days where a person works for a single company until retirement are long gone. Retirement funds, 401k’s, investment accounts, and high efficiency technology dominate lunch counter conversations, versus our parent’s conversations about family matters and how the kids are doing. Something has been lost from those days where people actually cared about coworkers and each other. I’m sure if you would ask ten people for a reason for the lack of concern, you would get different responses. According to what I have learned through this course in Organization Behavior, all the case studies, and the research on personal and position power, I have concluded that people are not put first. This has lead to and lack of success in business as well as failures. In most recent times, Enron Corporation comes to mind, along with other companies that accepted government bailout money in order to avoid massive layoffs or closing altogether. My group in this course chose to do the group project on position power and personal power. My individual subtopic deals with how a manager with only position power affects his/her subordinates...
