Investor owned healthcare plans are profit driven which means the best care will go to the ones who can afford it and the less fortunate will suffer the cost-effective service. In Farmers Article, he states “In the name of cost effectiveness, we cut back health benefits to the poor, who are more likely to be sick than those who are not poor .” Our healthcare has become a profit driven business and not driven by the need for, or equality of that care. “…where you find no struggle, you find no justice” (Farmer, 1997). We, as nurses, must find the struggle, the struggle being healthcare reform, and social justice. The affordable healthcare act was an attempt to reduce the health care disparities, but needs much work still. We must take an

Income Inequality And Health Care Essay

...relationship between income inequality and health coverage/status is an important area to examine because socioeconomic status has an effect on peoples health and lifespan. There are two theoretical perspectives, conflict and functional, that provide explanations for income inequality and health care coverage/status. Conflict perspective is the idea that social life is shaped by groups who compete with one another over resources. This results in a power struggle over wealth and prestige in society. The conflict theorist might predict that social inequality characterizes the quality of health and the quality of healthcare; that is, people with social disadvantageous are more likely to become ill than the socially elite, and because of their disadvantageous they will receive inadequate health care. The conflict theorist might assume that in order to make more money, physicians will try to self-regulate their practice of medicine in attempts to define social problems as medical problems....

What Is Democratic Socialism?

...socialism has taken root as well- everywhere but in the United States. Because of this, many false ideas about socialism have developed in the U.S. With this booklet, we hope to answer some of your questions about socialism. • Large corporations seem to be an almost permanent fixture in the US, so what is the point of working towards socialism? In the short term we can't eliminate large corporations, but we can bring them under democratic control. Government could use regulartions and tax incentives to encourage companies to act in the public interest and outlaw destructive activities such as exporting jobs to low-wage countries and polluting our environment. Public pressure and trade unions also have a critical role to play in the struggle to hold corporations accountable. Worker ownership of large corporations is another important possibility for democratizing our economy, and one that has recently seemed more and more attainable. Won't socialism be impractical because people will lose their incentive to work? We don't agree with the capitalist assumption that starvation or greed are the only reasons people work. People enjoy thier work if it is meaningful and enhances their lives. They work out of a sense of responsibility to their community and society. Although a long-term goal of socialism is to eliminate all but the...

...Werntoft, E., Hallberg, I., and Edberg, A.(2007). Older People’s Reasoning About Age Related Prioritization in Healthcare. Nursing Ethics 14 (3), 399-412. DOI Older People’s Reasoning About Age Related Prioritization in Healthcare Healthcare Policy, Law, and Ethics July 22, 2011 Introduction Elderly people are a diverse group regarding age, socioeconomic factors, health status and experience of health care. Older people views on age-related prioritization in health care are likely to contrast. The number of older people has enlarged and so has the use of costly treatments and medicines. However the healthcare cost for people who are eighty five and older has gone down at the time this article was written. In Sweden, they passed a law that states regardless of age, everyone has equal access to health services. Prioritization in healthcare is not unique. It happens frequently when resources are inadequate and diverse treatments will become greater in demand. The purpose of this study was to describe the reasoning of people aged 60 years and over about prioritization in health care with regard to age and willingness to pay. In Sweden, the Swedish Parliamentary Priority Commission was based on three ethical principles: the principle of human dignity, the principle of need and solidarity, and the cost-efficiency principle. Many feel that age should be criteria in the prioritization process. The study discusses the fair innings perspective. The fair innings...

According to Medicare’s official website, Medicare and Medicaid started in 1965 under President Lyndon B. Johnson to ensure that the disabled, elderly, and low-income families obtain health coverage. Under Medicare, the federal program can cover hospital insurance (also known as the Part A Plan), physician insurance (Part B), and prescription drugs (Part D) for the aged over the age of sixty-five (Stiglitz and Rosengard; Baker). Challenges and Strategies for Personal Success

...you have to create it.” Definition of success is different from every individual. It can mean wealth, fame, glory, remarkable career, nice house, happy family, good health, and the leisure in life they can imagine. It is not easy to achieve, it requires commitment to hard work and persistent effort, and constant drive for excellence. Les Brown a famous Radio Talk Show Host mentioned in his show that “people who chooses to do only what is easy will make their life difficult, those who chose to do what is difficult will make their life easy.” If they strive hard and work hard they will attain success that they truly deserve. “There are many aspects to success; material wealth is only one component. Moreover, success is a journey, not a destination. Material abundance, in all its expressions, happens to be one of those things that makes the journey more enjoyable. But success also includes good health, energy and enthusiasm for life, fulfilling relationships, creative freedom, emotional and psychological stability, a sense of well-being and peace of mind” (Chopra, 2001).   I love to travel and explore the world to see many beautiful places and experience different cultures of people around the Globe. Some responsibilities include promoting quality, free education, adequate health care, child care, and better public transportation, while a homeless person is free to do whatever he or she wants. Nevertheless, homeless people will usually beg for money in public places and some homeless people will perform by playing musical instruments in subways or on the street, so that they can earn a few dollars. Often, homeless people are otherwise normal citizens who became overwhelmed by mental problems or other emotionally disabling conditions. An average homeless person doesn't have personal wealth or at least the means to access wealth. A homeless person often is born into this struggle to make ends meet from the start. On the other hand, a president has more than enough wealth for an average person to enjoy a comfortable lifestyle. In some third world countries, the President often takes advantage of their corrupt policies and are at times exposed for stealing money from the government or accepting dirty money to fill their personal bank...

Multitasking is the order of the day as we struggle to fulfill our responsibilities to everyone in our lives. They may include employers, parents, spouses, children, clients and many others. In this melee, too often we forget to spare time for ourselves. The stress levels continue to build up until one day a major collapse may make us aware that in all this frenzied activity, we have forgotten to take care of one important thing – our health. As we spend days shuttling between hospital and home, subjecting our body to one test after another trying to find out what has gone wrong, we are forced to remember that Health is indeed Wealth. In earlier days, life was very simple. People worked 9 to 5 jobs, often walked everywhere, ate more of home food, did household chores and enjoyed a healthy balance in life. Now, we have cars and bikes to go around in, exciting varieties of fast food to eat, home appliances to reduce our chores and save time. But the time that has been saved in this manner is now being spent of the workplace. So people don’t have time to exercise which is very essential for good health. Because of this lack of exercise, obesity, diabetes, heart attacks, strokes, hypertension, etc. are on the rise even among the young. This has alarming implications for the nation as a whole. Poverty In America

Poverty is an ever present issue that affects millions of Americans today. It is a societal issue often swept under the proverbial mats of our consciousness. There are numerous things that could be done to combat poverty. Raising the minimum wage is one of them. Further expanding government programs is one. Preventing out of wedlock childbearing is another. There are many reasons people fall into poverty and the solutions to it are as numerous if not more. Why should we care for the poor? It established itself over several decades of mistreatment of immigrants by people from the west, and people of power from the west supporting and “okaying” this mistreatment. This is how inequality is produced. Immigrants, however, were not the only ones being mistreated, women of every social class and race were also regarded in this way.
