...02/07/2013 GOV 100 Paper Assignment #2 Gun Control: - S.150 - Assault Weapons Ban of 2013 Connecticut December 2012, a Bushmaster AR-15 assault weapon was involved in the deaths of twenty children. Colorado, an AR-15 assault rifle was involved in the killing of twelve innocent civilians at a movie theater. A TEC-DC 9, Hi-Point 995 Carbin, and a Savage 67H shotgun involved in killing eleven high school students along with one high school teacher in Colorado. The fundamental question here, is that why are such powerful assault weapons in the hands of civilians? Most Americans are against the possession of assault weapons in the hands of the civilians. Established in 1791, The 2nd Amendment in the Bill of Rights gives citizens the right to bear arms. The founding fathers had intended for American citizens to have the right to bear arms to protect themselves from a tyrannical government regime. Which was a legitimate concern during that time period that does not uphold presently. However, throughout history the American government makes changes to the constitution as the country goes through economic expansion and technological progress. A fine example is the 1965 voting act, which outlawed discriminatory voting. It was indeed a necessary and important act implemented to uphold the ideal of equality among all American citizens. As time and circumstances change, so must the terms and conditions that govern them. Essentially, the interpretation of the constitution must...

...pass gun control laws that limit the right of citizens to own assault rifles? In my opinion, I think they should. Firstly, because times have changed since the second amendment was first issued. Secondly, because these weapons were specifically made for soldiers fighting on the battlefield. Lastly, because people don't realize just how much damage can be done with an assault rifle. When the Second Amendment was created in 1971, it was originally meant to protect people and to help fight against any tyrannical federal government trying to invade the country. Therefore, It made sense to own an assault weapon before, but now times are different. There aren't any tyrannical governments or dictators trying to take over the United States. Now, we have the army and the police to protect citizens from that kind of danger. That is the whole purpose of their job to serve and protect our citizens and our country. If people still feel the need to protect themselves with weapons, they should buy non-lethal weapons. According to an article called " A Brief History of the Assault Rifle", the assault rifle was made to "meet the needs of combat soldiers on the modern battlefield, where the level of...

...Argumentative Essay against Gun Control Argumentative Essay against Gun Control Since 1980, forty-four states have passed laws allowing gun owners to carry concealed weapons outside their homes for personal protection. (Five additional states had these laws before 1980. Illinois is the sole holdout.) A federal ban on the possession, transfer, or manufacture of semiautomatic assault weapons, passed in 1994, was allowed to expire in 2004. In 2005, Florida passed the Stand Your Ground law, an extension of the so-called castle doctrine, exonerating from prosecution citizens who use deadly force when confronted by an assailant, even if they could have retreated safely; Stand Your Ground laws expand that protection outside the home to any place that an individual “has a right to be.” Twenty-four states have passed similar laws. Guns, therefore, are necessary in today's society for our protection There is no point to implement gun control considering the reality that criminals will still find a way to procure guns if they want to do so. Criminals will always make sure to have access to the guns that they need to execute their crimes successfully. They usually have connections to other influential people that can provide them with the guns and weapons that they need in order to execute their crimes. The bottom line is that if the criminals want to have access to guns, they will be able to get them even if there is a gun control policy in place. This law will not stop...

...do. This country would be able to prevent many accidents and have fewer crimes. First of all, no one should be allowed to buy more than one handgun. What would be the purpose of someone owning so many weapons? The simultaneous or rapid purchase of multiple sales is a potential indicator of gun trafficking. If we had better gun enforcement, we would have less crime. Such as, Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), which for several years has been the major federal initiative to combat gun violence, including several elements (such as, gun locks and other efforts to reduce gun availability) that research suggest are likely to have at best modest effects on gun crime. Children at young age seem to be affected by this as well. Kids think guns are cool and play pretend games as if they owned guns. For instance, a little seven-year-old was drawing the other day in class; unfortunately he drew a gun, and ended up being suspended from school. It happened in New Jersey, which also had four kindergartners sent home because of playing "cops and robbers." These incidents show that something has to be changed because are the kids the true cold blood killers? What if one of the kids got in contact with a gun from his father or a family member would he want to play "cops and robbers" with the weapon? The Second Amendment gives us the right to bear arms, in many cases it is not a bad idea to own a gun and they can save your life or someone else's but it's important to have strict gun regulations....

...Gun control is something that has been talked about for many years now with valid points on both sides. In my opinion, we do not need stricter gun control for the simple fact that guns don’t kill people people kill people. If someone gets into a car accident while under the influence of alcohol they don't go out and try to make it harder for someone to get it they simply charge the person with a crime and that is the end of it. When a criminal gets his hand on a gun and kills someone they don't just go after him they go after every law abiding citizens rights! I feel as though if more people exercised their second amendment right with the proper precautions we would live in a much safer place. I believe that people should have to go through safety tests as well as background checks and mental health checks. In somewhere like NewYork, they make it almost impossible to get your concealed weapon permit nor do we have open carry. Our second amendment is there so that we can protect ourselves as well as sometimes protecting others. There have been many times when someone who exercised their second amendment right and stop tragedies from happening. For example, April 24th, 1998 a student showed up to his middle school dance while welding a pistol and began to open fire! The owner of the hall reacted...

...The culture of weapons is the biggest reason for the US be leaders in death by firearms among developed countries. Mass shooting is defined by FBI as incidents which four or more people get shot or kill in a single event, at the same general time and location, not including the shooter. During the year of 2015, there were 372 mass shootings in the U.S. in 2015, killing 475 people and wounding 1,870 (FBI) and those numbers indicate that mass shooting events are also occurring at bigger frequency, specifically with mass public events or places, usually where the victims do not know the shooter. Those attacks are often pre-meditated with the purpose of retribution, mass-murder, terrorism, or mass-hysteria. Additionally, more than one a day is how often, on average, shootings that left people wounded or dead in the United States (Cohen, Sarah, Lafraniere and Oppel)....

...The topic of gun control is perhaps one of the most controversial subjects in the nation. It is known that there are approximately 300 million firearms in circulation in the United States. With that being said, from information gathered from the article by Paul Waldman, those weapons account to the 11,000-12,000 gun related homicides that occur every year. If someone has guns in his or her possession, it is easier to kill many people at once. Bombs, guns, knives, and other weapons can be used against people to harm them. While yes, firearms are a problem, they are not the only problem out there. To many Americans, owning a firearm gives them a sense of security. Knowing that they have a way to protect themselves in a dangerous...

...Arguments on Gun Control Arguments on Gun Control Introduction Gun control is law and policy which has been developed for the purpose of restricting the import, production, shipment, possession, use and sale of the firearms. There are variations in the laws and policies of gun control around the globe. There are strict gun control policies in United Kingdom. On the other hand, the gun control policies in United States are modest. Many people claim that the gun control policies are very effective and there should be strict control on the implementation of these policies. On the other hand, a group of people thinks that the gun control policies are not so effective and there should be no strict policies on the firearms. Thus, the both sides provide their arguments on the issue of gun control. The main aim of this paper is to persuade against the policies of gun control. The paper is comprised of both the arguments in favor and against of the gun control policies. Discussion It is so easy to understand that without guns or rifles, killing of criminals would have been much more difficult to consummate, which is sometimes hard to explain how it is possible that guns are legal in the largest and most powerful democracy in the world. But it is undeniable that easy access to firearms greatly facilitates this sinister task (Amo, 1989). The criminals have committed one of the latest killings with firearms that shook Americans, 14 Dead Colombine students in 1999...

...Gun Control Jose Moreno HUM/114 February 2, 2012 David Radcliff In today’s society the issues regarding gun control have been controversial. Many strict laws have been passed by the federal government to regulate ownership of guns. In an attempt to regulate gun control many people believe that past familiar high profile political shootings have been as a result of the impactful gun control restrictions. In 2008 there was a battle taking place in The Supreme Court that voted five to four in favor of the American people’s constitutional right to keep a loaded handgun at home for self defense. The ruling has made anti gun supporters disagree and angry. Weapons are tools used for a variety of reasons weather it’s for safe guarding material that is highly pilfer able or protection of a family home. Guns are tools that should be treated and handled with respect and should not be abused or misused by any means. It is a privilege as well as a right that a person may own a weapon if he or she should decide to do so. I support the right to own and bear fire arms. I understand that if weapons get into the wrong hands tragedy’s can be as a result. I also agree that crime is low in areas that support the right to carry weapons. Carrying guns may often time deter crime from happening. It is important to educate oneself on the issue of gun control so that the person can make a quality decision on whether or not it is to their benefit to own a weapon. I understand that crime will never...

...able to be armed, due to gun control laws, the outcome would be detrimental. If severe gun control was actually enforced, as a society we would see crime rates increase, and our idea that school shootings would stop would be found out to be false. Many people argue over gun control, but do they truly know what it is? Gun control refers to laws or policies that are put in place to regulate the overall market with guns, including the ownership of them. This is something that has been of debate...

...Gun Control Columbine, Virginia Tech, Aurora and most recently Newtown; these places will forever be known as sites of enormous tragedy. The flames of adults and children were put out, and innocent lives were taken. All some could do was hold back their tears and ask why! Rage began to consume some while they watched the families of the victims break down and become overcome by sorrow. They began to look for someone or something to enact justice upon. The blame quickly went to weapons, guns to be specific. According to many lawmakers, senators and associations, gun debate rages on to this very day. Sen. Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) said, “Until we have such reason to believe that we’d have a different outcome I think the issue is resolved by the Senate”. While some may have some strong feelings otherwise, I believe that completely abolishing guns will not solve our problems. Taking away guns from law abiding citizens will only endanger them more. I believe it is nearly impossible to eliminate guns. Although I am against eliminating our right to bear arms, I do believe that there should be more strict guidelines and procedures for us to be able to own weapons; more comprehensive background checks, mental evaluations and less availability. Imagine this, you are a law abiding citizen and the government just ruled that you may no longer own a weapon. You turn in your gun and two days later, a criminal breaks into your home, armed, and begins to assault you and your family. If only...
