...Individual assignment 1. Yes, I agree with video and Web conferencing will make business travel extinct because it is more convenient than business travel. Recording to the report issued by the Global e-Sustainability Initiative and the Climate Group in 2008. It said that up to 20 percent of business travel could be replaced by virtual meeting technology. It means the number of business travel will decrease. Also, there have a example in the article, technology consulting firm Accenture reports that it eliminated expenditures for 240 international trips and 120 domestic flights in a single month. It was a good example to prove business travel will extinct. Technology (video and Web conferencing) help employers communicate with each other more easily. Business travel is not the only way to confer. 2. Videoconferencing allows individuals at two or more locations to communicate simultaneously through two-way video and audio transmissions. Telepresence strives to make users feel as if they are actually present in a location different from their own.The critical feature of videoconferencing is the digital compression of audio and video streams by a device called a codec. ...Cisco Systems Uses Its Culture for Competitive Advantage Manny Rivelo, a senior vice president at Cisco Systems, belongs to more internal company teams than he can count on both hands. "I'm on a litany of them—three councils, maybe six boards, and five working groups," he says. They're part of an organizational web dreamed up by CEO John Chambers—a structure so complex that it takes 15 minutes and a whiteboard to fully explain. Chambers, however, uses just three words to describe the benefits of the San Jose networking giant's manage-ment system: "speed, skill, and flexibility." It seems paradoxical that a multilayered organi-zational model would actually speed things up. But Chambers, whose company landed on the World's Most Admired Companies list partly for its management prowess, says his system of boards and councils has in-deed made Cisco (CSCO, Fortune 500) more agile—and that it will help the company grow in the recession. Chambers' idea originated at the tail end of the 2001 downturn, after Cisco wrote off $2.2 billion in losses. He realized that the company's hierarchical structure pre-cluded it from moving quickly into new markets, so he began to group executives into cross-functional teams. Chambers figured that putting together managers in sales and leaders in engineering, say, would break down traditional silos and lead to faster decision making. Not all Cisco executives felt the same way. "It took seven years, and the first three years were bumpy,"...

...High Educ (2009) 58:563–584 DOI 10.1007/s10734-009-9216-y Groupwork as a form of assessment: common problems and recommended solutions W. Martin Davies Published online: 20 March 2009 Ó Springer Science+Business Media B.V. 2009 Abstract This paper reviews some of the literature on the use of groupwork as a form of assessment in tertiary institutions. It outlines the considerable advantages of groupwork but also its systemic associated problems. In discussing the problems, the paper considers issues such as ‘‘free riding’’ and the ‘‘sucker effect’’, issues associated with ethnic mix in groups, and the social dilemma problem—in which students face conflicting demands between altruism and self-interest. The paper then outlines several models of effective groupwork and makes suggestions for implementing groupwork tasks. The paper also looks at the key assessment tasks which are commonly employed—namely, additive, conjunctive, disjunctive and discretionary tasks—and assesses which are most suited to groupwork. The paper considers the related issues of task complexity, recognition for effort, and strategies for minimising issues concerning group size. The paper also briefly considers strategies for implementing incentives for groupwork members, and outlines the issue of penalties for unproductive group members. The paper concludes by providing recommendations for how to maximise the advantages of groupwork while trying to minimise the disadvantages. Keywords ...
