DYING TO FIT IN TO THAT WEDDING DRESS
Abstract
Dieting has been a fad for the past few years. People tend to focus on the most popular diets are the ones being flaunted around by celebrities. Women have always tended to go dress crazy when planning their weddings. Women wait until the last minute to want to lose weight before getting a wedding dress. No one seems to do it the healthy way. Exercising would guarantee a normal healthy weight loss before a wedding.

DYING TO FIT IN TO THAT WEDDING DRESS
Dying to Fit into that Wedding Dress

Brides are starting to go on crash diets before tying the knot. They get these ideas that they can lose weight in a matter of days. I believe most diets are really unrealistic. No one has noticed that the cleansing drinks or pill methods never reveal what toxins are in them. Americans tend to not pay attention to themselves but worry about what the celebrities are doing. In chapter 5, it discusses how 66 percent of adults in America are overweight. People aren’t working out nor are they eating healthy. A lot of people tend to not be happy within to change anything. I often wonder if most women only consider losing weight when it comes to only looking good. You never hear about anyone really wanting to lose weight because of health issues. In the article, Bridal Hunger Games, they discuss a woman names Jessica Schnaider who spent 8 days on a feeding tube just to lose weight to fit in to her wedding dress. Brides tend to gain weight a lot during planning of a wedding because they are nervous eating. It’s a new procedure that uses a nasogastric tube to provide all nourishments eliminating carbohydrates, for tend days. The body burns

...Ralph Lauren, dealing mainly with accessories. Due the frustration of limited options that were compatible to her exclusive taste she began to designed her own wedding gown, commissioning a seamstress to assemble it. “This inspired her to launch Vera Wang Bridal House Ltd., in the Carlisle Hotel on Madison Avenue, New York City”.(bridal house, 2003). Vera decided to target upper class clientele, initially offering bridal gowns by designers such as Guy Laroche, Arnold Scaasi, Christian Dior and Carolina Herrena. Her background spawned her birth as a force to be reckoned with in the fashion world: the discipline she learned from competitive ice skating; the trips to Paris for fashion shows with her mother, as a child; her high-priced education; the mentors she acquired during her career at Vogue and with Ralph Lauren, who broadened her knowledge of fashion. Her background and understanding for the need to fill a niche, in the fashion industry, fuels her passion for designing elegant apparel. A major challenge that Vera Wang faced in establishing her business was managing the four million dollar start-up money that she received from her father in order to start up her company. She immediately invested 1 million dollars of her investment into restoration of her boutique, while simultaneously designing and selling wedding gowns from a suite inside...

Connections

...Connections “Fashions fade; style is eternal” - Yves Saint-Laurent Although Yves Saint-Laurent has made made millions in the fashion industry and is a household name, I respectfully disagree. I don't think fashions truly ever really fade. There is always something “coming back in style.” There is one particular style that never really seemed to go away and is still prominent in 21st century high fashion. Greek style dresses have endured the test of time and have become a bit of a staple of modern fashion. The early Greeks made the peplos style famous, but European influence called it the “Empire Waist”; dresses that were long and loose fitting but gathered under the bust. Today, modern wedding dresses are almost always made with some version of an empire waist, and New York Fashion Week's catwalks are littered with remnants of Greek style. No offense to Mr. Saint-Laurent. A peplos is a full-length Greek garment worn by women before 500 BCE. The cloth was manufactured as a tube of fabric that was folded inside out from the top down, then gathered at the waist and fastened at the shoulders in either a strap or with pins. The top of the tube draped down to the waist giving the appearance of a second piece of material. A similar style that would have been worn by both men and women was a chiton[1]. The chiton was a heavier garment made of wool or linen and was held on with a fibula, which was an ancient Greek brooch.[2] Men's styles of chitons were either knee length, or body...

Virgin

...instead of the daunting feeling I’ve lost all the virginally of myself. The definition of a virgin: a person who has never had sexual intercourse, an unmarried girl or woman, or an unmarried girl, religious woman, especially a saint. It’s like all the T.V. reality shows minus the drama and preparations on a woman in her white dress walking down the aisle as her husband awaits her. She’s wearing a white wedding dress to show she has stayed faithful to only one man and is giving up her virginity to him. Right? I can't exaggerate how many TV. shows I’ve watched on women walking down the aisle on their “special day.” The question that always comes to my mind is, “Is she a virgin?”, and “Why is she wearing white if she’s not a virgin!” I can’t help but ask myself those questions even if I’m being morbidly judgmental. As a little girl, I once planned out my whole wedding in my mind--the wedding dress, the veil, the shoes, the corset, the undergarments, and they were all the color of white. I was a virgin, too! I will have to conceal this fact from my parents and myself when I walk down the aisle on my “special” day. It’d be interesting if women had to dress on the color symbolizing how many men they have slept with! Marriage...

Representations in the Media

...The group in society I have decided to focus on for this internal are teenage girls/young women and how they are represented as sexualised/beautified to market a product to a viewer. Also how they are shown as promiscuous, beauty driven people who are obsessed with achieving physical “perfection” based on their favourite celebrities throughout the media. The three media texts I have chosen that I think best portray the idea of teenage girls and how they strive to be physically perfect are; the film ‘The House Bunny’ , the television show ‘Gossip Girl’ and the magazine ‘Cosmopolitan’. (Mainly the cover) My first example is the television series ‘Gossip Girl’ The first image is a photo from the March 2011 Cosmopolitan magazine of Blake Lively portraying her character Serena Van Der Woodsen in the T.V series ‘Gossip Girl’. Serena has been styled based on her character, beautiful and desirable (mostly due to her wealth and social status in the show). She has been dressed in entirely white, surrounded in a completely white background, this allows her skin to be the main aspect of focus, and it portrays perfectskin and skinniness. Most girls who see this aspire to imitate these images and may inspire feelings of failure when they do not achieve the exact image. Her lips in the picture are pouting making her look sexy and draws attention to her lips by also making them look glossy and shiny. Her face has been ‘retouched’ (or photoshoped) giving her a look of perfection and...

Gentlemen Prefer Blonds Navel

...I think Lorelei and Dorothy’s wedding scene is the navel of the movie, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. In this scene, the audience sees that the two women are finally satisfied with their situation. The camera captures the rings of Lorelei and Dorothy. In my opinion, this shot is a good summary of the film. We see that the two women have their loved men and also their different sized rings. These rings represent how important the money is for them. Dorothy’s ring is smaller than the Lorelei’s. This is because money is not that important for Dorothy. Since they get what they want, they seem quite happy. This shot also demonstrates that the two women are still together. The last scene of the movie illustrates that the relationship between Lorelei and Dorothy is so strong that they even arrange a double wedding. This connection between the two makes a part of the audience think whether they are bisexual or not. I claim that this movie contains many bisexual visuals. The shot that shows Lorelei and Dorothy in the wedding dress together as if they are a couple is a good example. In the article, “Everyone’s Here for Love: Bisexuality and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes”, Doty states that the film is in some aspects shows as if Lorelei and Dorothy are getting married with each other (149). “The film even comes close to representing a women-women wedding by eliminating the words of the minister and closing in for that the final two-shot of the women looking at their rings and then each other (149)...
