Facebook Condemns Practice Of Employers Demanding Employee Passwords

Hi class,

I am sure that some of you have heard the recent news about some employers requesting access to an applicant's Facebook account or demanding that the applicant hand over their login and password so the employer can view the private or protected content. Here is a recent article on Facebook's stance on this practice: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/03/23/facebook-employer-employee-passwords_n_1375020.html?ref=technology

What are your thoughts on this? How would you respond during an interview if asked to provide access to your protected/private Facebook account? If you were in a position to hire people, would you request this information? Why or why not?

I have never heard of this but it is good to know since I am looking for employment. I would differently be curious on why the interviewer would need or want my Facebook account information. I would ask a lot of question about this because my husband always tells me do not talk too much because you give out to much information that is one way you can get someone to steal your identity.
If I were in a position to hire people I would not ask for any information about the person, I was interviewing about their Facebook account. If I know the person that was being interview by me, I might ask that person if I can friend them but I differently would ask about anything else to do with his Facebook account. I believe that the reason people have Facebook accounts to connect with love one’s and friends that I lost contact with and/or that it is easier just to get on their Facebook page and contact them through that way.
For a personal example, my husband was getting chemotherapy and he had not been in touch with his family, at that time, for 17 years. My husband which was my fiancé at that time gave his sister name and that is how he got back in touch with his mother, sister and niece; in addition to extended family members.
