Free Will, Truth, Knowledge, and Opinion
Free will, truth, knowledge, and opinion are all intertwined and are thoughts that change depending on each person. The definitions are similar and yet very different for each one. Free will is a person’s thinking that leads to action that is decided based on those thoughts. Truth is a constantly changing and well known piece of information. Knowledge is formed with bits of information each person has to come across and retain over time. Finally opinions are thoughts that, while not proven completely, hold some truth for the person with these thoughts. Each of these 4 parts helps to make up a complete thought that is not forced by any other person.
All four of these parts are needed to form a person’s opinion that differs from the person next to them. We need free will to not have the exact thoughts that everyone around has and is formed by what said person thinks is the truth on the topic. Knowledge is used to add structure to the thought by giving reference points to go off and lastly, opinion is what holds it together as a complete thought and keeps this though his or her own.
Each of these pieces is required to form a complete opinionated thought on his or her free will. As stated in The Art of Thinking, (2009) “To be a successful problem solver, you will need both factual knowledge and proficiency in thinking.”
