Week 3 Assignments, Chapter 7 - 9 In response to chapter seven’s objective, one has to explain how slavery influence life for the African American today. Is there a single person, place, thing or event that has connected past slavery to the now and free present? One could mention the Willie Lynch letter. Willie Lynch was a British slave owner that lived in the West Indies. The letter is said to be a speech on how to make a slave, while addressing other slave masters. In the letter, the making of a slave was a science, because he had boasted about used some of the newest and some of the oldest methods to control their slaves. He even goes on to say his methods were full proof and if applied right, you could possibly control them (slaves) for three hundred years. The first method is to use their differences to created fear, distrust and envy among them. You must pitch the old black male against the young and vise versa. Pitch the light skin slaves against the dark skin slaves and vise versa. Pitch the male against the female slave and vise versa. He guaranteed that the distrust and envy would be self-regenerating and would outlast any adulation, respect or admiration. While crafting the fear distrust and envy among them, ensure that they love, respect, and depend on us, the slave master. The second method is to break the negro slave so there are useful for production for business and pleasure. Pay attention to the female and the youngest offspring because you will need to crossbreed to produce a variety and division of labor. He talks about breaking them like one would a horse.
