...BUS/415 Robert Hedicke Week 4 Scenario 3 Brian McDonald spent his time away from work on his hobby, model trains. His train set was large and consisted of rare and one-of-a-kind trains. One day, while visiting with fellow train hobbyist Harry, Brian said, “When I retire in 2 years from Food mart, I’m going to sell my trains and spend the rest of my life traveling on real trains.” Brian told Harry that he was the only person he planned to offer his trains to, because he knew Harry would take care of them. Harry said he looked forward to the day when he could buy the trains. Harry spent the next 2 years and most of his savings building a new 2,000-square foot room onto his house to make room for the trains. When Harry told Brian he was building the new room, Brian just smiled. Brian also heard that Harry borrowed money from his aunt to buy the trains. When Brian retired, he sold his trains to his neighbor, James. Harry sued Brian, claiming breach of contract, or in the alternative, for promissory estoppels. Who wins? Explain your answer. * * * In this case it seems as if Harry has the right to sue Brian. In my opinion what they had was an oral contract in which the contract was breeched at the time Brian decided not to sell the trains to Harry but to sell them to his neighbor James. This would be the intentions of Harry’s retirement to retire in two years from the Food Mart and spend the rest of his life traveling on real trains, the trains he would buy...

...Behind the Scenes: Deloitte Cathy Benko is the chief talent officer of a company named Deloitte. After going through, “lots of zigs and zags” (Pearson 217) to get to where she is career-wise, Cathy knew the conventional ladder concept was not suitable for every employee. Deloitte and Cathy developed what is called the lattice approach. This intricate approach is more adaptive to the changing standards, requirements, and expectations of the modern-day workplace. Deloitte’s lattice approach helps encourage employees by concentrating on personal career goals, and presenting the opportunity to keep business and personal life in sync. (Pearson 218). This creates job satisfaction, which results in loyal, long-term, and valuable employees. Job security is strengthened due to employee’s ability to keep skills relevant in a fluctuating market. The increase in flexibility at work, along with expanded career options, allows for a better career-life fit. Deloitte’s lattice model, Mass Career Customization, is based on pace, workload, location and scheduling, and role. Employees work at an accelerated or decelerated pace depending on their current situation and needs. A supervisor, who just had a baby and needs to be home due a slow recovery from his wife, may temporarily step down as supervisor and take a less demanding position. Managers can tell the difference between someone working at a decelerated pace and simply being lazy and unproductive. The decelerated employee will still perform...

...Determining Databases and Data Communications Tasha Carson BIS/320 3/14/2016 Professor Rita Solomon-Moore Determining Databases and Data Communications Scenario 1: The methodology of managing a trade show booth is to keep certain things in mind about the components, equipment and each and every item that is to be transported back to the head office, when you are closing the booth. We are in charge of setting up a consumer electronics trade shown which mainly consists of products like dry batteries, cell phones, laptops, computer accessories, phone accessories and monitor LCDs. We need to make sure that these products are safely returned when the trade show is over. There can be a number of ways in which we to categorize these products into their respective fields so we can keep track of them when shipping them to the main office, because we are liable to the security of these materials. By classifying smaller goods, like dry batteries, we can categorize them into one shipment package that can be transported safely back. Other products like cell phones and their accessories, we can pack them together so we have a safety for the products to remain in one carton. Likewise, keeping computer accessories with laptops and keeping LCDs separate, we can ensure that the products do not get damaged during transportation. Data base system is not that compulsory for managing this equipment, although it is a good thing to have it but it gets costly, when we can easily keep...

...blades, and whether or not to introduce composite blades. From our analysis, we have developed seven possible scenarios for the company, and have determined that our last scenario would most effectively utilize the remaining carbide inventory, while progressively entering the composite blade market. Background Leedsworks, Imperial Optronics PLC is the worldwide leader in the dry-cut lens processing equipment. They produce carbide blades made from a special steel alloy that can only be used for these blades. Barry Sullivan, the Leedsworks Division Executive, is now faced with a crucial financial decision due to a new competitor’s composite blade that has a higher quality, a longer lifespan, and developed from a cheaper material than their own carbide blade. There has always existed competition from European, American, and Asian firms; but, the composite blade is the newest technology for the industry that caught Leeds unprepared. Several of the company’s divisions will be affected by the decision on how to transfer over to the new blade. The demand is immediate, though the product will take at least six months to reach the market. Barry Sullivan must closely consider the irrelevant and relevant costs that are involved in his decision to switch from carbide blades to composite blades. Assumptions Leedsworks can produce and sell 10,000 carbide blades per week based on the fact that the company averages 10,000 in sales weekly. Currently, there are 400,000 finished units...

...Pricing strategies of low cost airlines Keith J Mason Air Transport Group Cranfield University K.Mason@Cranfield.ac.uk 1. Introduction Low cost airlines such as EasyJet, and Ryanair have developed quickly in the European market in the last five years. The UK market has seen the most dramatic development where by the summer of 2001, these carriers accounted for over 22% of the short haul capacity from London and were present in 58% of the 128 short haul routes operated from this city (source: OAG, 2001). During a five-year period from 1997, the seat capacity offered from London has risen by 17%, and virtually all of this rise (95.4%) was attributable to the low cost carriers. The low cost carriers have both penetrated and grown these markets, principally by garnering a consumer perception that the fares offered are very low. This perception has been developed in no small part by extensive advertising and effective use of public relations. For example, Ryanair has offered fares as low as one penny (plus taxes), and therefore it is not surprising that there is great media coverage of these carriers, which in turn generates more interest in the services. Both Ryanair and EasyJet have been very effective in using media coverage of their legal wrangles with traditional carriers such as British Airways and Lufthansa to promote their services and low fares. While the media has helped these airlines communicate their message of low fares to the public...
