Questionnaires are a series of questions, prepared by experienced professionals that help the auditor develop a better understanding of the client’s internal controls. The questionnaires are relatively easy to use, and considerably reduce the possibility of overlooking important internal control deficiencies.
The questions are usually so phrased, that a “Yes” or “No” answer is expected, and also additional space is provided for comments. Usually a “Yes” is the favorable answer, and a “No” indicates a potential problem/deficiency.

b. Identify several advantages of using questionnaires to document the auditor's understanding of internal control.
The advantages of using a questionnaire are that they highlight any weaknesses in in the company’s internal controls. They also allow the auditor to focus their efforts on the areas they are most needed. They provide guidance to less experienced staff and reduce the possibility of any issues being overlooked. The questionnaire is an easy way to conduct a thorough audit of the internal controls.
