The purpose of this speech is to get American’s rallied around the fact that they need to aid Britain in stopping Hitler from taking over the last line of defense to our democratic freedom, to stand up for the very freedom that they hold so dear to them. Harold Ickes uses Logs, ethos, and pathos in his speech to the American public. First the uses pathos, starting off calling some Americans “scared chickens” (Ickes), and playing further into the high emotions of times which included nervousness about entering such a war, pride that we have in our own freedom and country, and even selfishness to look at the fact that by entering the war we are actually protecting our own futures, “We Americans know that freedom, like peace, is indivisible. We cannot retain our liberty if three-fourths of the world is enslaved. Brutality, injustice and slavery, if practiced as dictators would have them, universally and systematically, in the long run would destroy us as surely as a fire raging in our nearby neighbor's house would burn ours if we didn't help to put out his.” (Ickes). He uses ethos because he is one drawing on the fact that everyone knows who he is and will listen to what he says as a matter of authority to some degree. Ickes also used logos to appeal to the American public. He states, “If we are to retain our own freedom, we must do everything within our power to aid Britain. We must also do everything to restore to the conquered peoples their freedom. This means the Germans too.” (Ickes). I believe that the Toulmin method of argument is being used in this paper, and not the Rogerian. I base this fact on how Ickes is in no way objective, or neutral to the subject matter.
