The word law is defined as “the binding rules of conduct meant to enforce justice and prescribe duty or obligation, and derived largely from custom or formal enactment by a ruler or legislature” (“Law”, n.d.). Laws are put in place to help regulate and to provide a certain set of structure. ...Individual Assignment – Week One Shanita Evans BIS/220 – Introduction to Computer Application & Systems March 6, 2012 Dr. Xuan Yu Technology has gone from the days of the pony express to advancing at a rate of a mile a minute to now evolving to what seems like the speed of light or faster. With such a fast paced environment of change in technology, policies and laws must adapt to be compatible to those advancements in order to provide the best method to govern the laws and policies and protect its people. This paper will explore how technological advancements have influenced crucial changes in two essential policies: the Electronic Communications Privacy Act (ECPA) and the Electronic Funds Transfer Act (EFTA). The Electronic Communications Privacy Act, an extension of the Federal Wiretap Statute, was endorsed in 1986 (Justice Information Sharing, 2010). This was a necessary implementation with how technology was diversifying ways to communicate and share information. In order to oversee and safeguard technological advancements such as email, cordless and cell phone communications, and electronically stored data the federal government had to amend and sometimes put into operation new policies. These policies, like the Electronic Communications Privacy Act, minimize many ethical issues that came along with the development of these advancements. As technology experimented with ideals such as wireless connection, it gave way to many unethical and at times illegal practices...

...Week 1 Individual Assignment ECO/365 Week 1 Individual Assignment The article that I have read for this week’s assignment was called “Why has US Oil Consumption Steadily Fallen Since 2004” The author, Gail Tverberg; suggest several reasons for the decline in gasoline sales since 2004. The author explains that she used the year 2004 as a baseline because it is the year that America could visually see the significant increases in gas and oil prices. One of the factors the author mentions is improvements in mileage and fuel efficiency on new vehicles manufactured. Another factor decreased usage because of fewer miles traveled for personal and business uses. The author suggests that the biggest reason for the decline in gas use is due to the lack of production for “Other” gas/oil products due to manufacturing material changes, and the overall decline of manufacturing in the United States. (Tverberg, 2013) The author state that between 2004 and 2012 gasoline consumption is down about 347,000 barrels a day. The author further state that of the 347,000 barrels per day 43,000 of those barrels are due to more efficiency in gas mileage on newly produced vehicles (Tverberg, 2013). Included in this figure are hybrid vehicles that use a combination alternative fuel and gasoline. The author goes on to state that outside of improved gas efficiency the majority of the decline in gas/oil usage comes from shrinkage in industrial activity. This has caused a reduction in miles traveled...

...Week Four Individual Assignment Kevin M. Gattas University of Phoenix IS Concepts Richard Bohn Purpose The importance of the OSI (open systems interconnection) model is for networks to communicate within the system. It is a system formed to allow a network administrator to perform trouble shooting in a way that is logical and step by step within the OSI model Scope The purpose of this essay is to break down the seven layers of the OSI model. The seven layer model defines a standard by which to computer share data over a network space starting with application layer. It will break each modeling section to lay out a more detailed explanation of how each layer is operated and how they all work together. Also, it will discuss which level this packet filtering routers and firewalls reside at, how packet filtering routers and firewalls protect the network and the concepts of cryptography. The seven layers of the OSI model are: 1. Physical layer 2. Data link layer 3. Network layer 4. Transport layer 5. Session layer 6. Presentation layer 7. ...1. The willingness to pay is the value that the consumer puts on the good. Every person puts a different value on everything from material things to natural resources. Having money and being able to pay for goods plays a big part in a person willingness to pay. Willingness to pay relates to demand in the way that there is a market curve for the goods that an individual is willing to pay for the goods. First you start with a high price on the good and see how many buyers will be willing to pay for that good at that price. Then you lower the price and see what happens with the consumers. Doing this you can follow the trends and see what price a good is at when a consumer’s willingness to pay is at its peak. Every consumer has a different demand curve and it depends on their wealth and what they can afford to see their willingness to pay. (Field and Field 2009) 2. There are many things to consider when it comes to the cost of manufacturing a product. To determine to cost of manufacturing you need to know the costs required for the business, in production, the cost of selling a product to determine the price and when the product is sold, was there a profit or loss. ...What is your job title? My job title is Senior Counselor. I work for St. Cloud Hospital Recovery Plus. What is the target population? The target population that I work with is women in primary chemical dependency treatment. We also have a relatively new program called Family Unity that targets women who are pregnant or men and women who have children. We allow these women to bring their children with them to treatment and reside with them at the residential housing facility. These women also receive parenting education and classes and meet weekly with a parenting counselor. The age group of women I work with is women ages 18 through approximately age 55. We have adolescent programs that address the needs of younger girls and we also have specific programs to address the needs of older women. I chose to work with adult women in primary treatment because I felt a stronger connection with adult women versus children. I did two internships at Recovery Plus and truly felt like I was meant to work with the women in primary treatment. I felt like I wanted to help adult women and give them coping skills to handle their disease of addiction. I also feel like I have more patience to work with adult women. What is the mission statement at the agency? The mission statement of our agency is: As a Catholic, regional hospital, we improve the health and quality of life for the people we serve in a manner that reflects the healing mission of Jesus What services are provided...

...Accrual-basis accounting is recording transactions as the service occurs, even if cash is not received yet [ (Kimmel, 2009) ]. It makes sense that most companies would choose this way to me as I feel this is the best way to keep track of money that you are going to receive and keep things more up to date. The cash basis accounting is not recorded until the transaction until the cash is received (Kimmel, 2009). This to me would get really confusing if you are awaiting payment for a job already done. If you forget to add it to your financial statements or remember what the incoming cash is for you may get turned around. The main difference between the two to me is the fact that one is recorded with out the cash being paid and the other is not recorded until the cash is actually in hand. I would also like to know in my reports that I am awaiting that cash so that I can account for it in future months. Another reason is that when looking at the numbers laid out the numbers for the cash basis accounting can look misleading for the company. The reason that cash basis is prohibited under generally accepted accounting principles, is that it doesn’t record revenue when it is earned, that violates the revenue recognition principle. Similarly it doesn’t record the expenses when they are incurred which in turn would violate the matching principle. In the end when comparing the differences of the two accounting types it’s easy to see why accrual basis accounting is the chosen method...

...Security Monitoring: The inputs and outputs of business James P. England CMGT/442 April 9, 2012 David Conway Security Monitoring: The inputs and outputs of business Rapidly changing technological advances make computers a part of the every workplace. Companies store important data on computer systems, databases, networks, and workplace communication uses computers and networks. Computers can reduce paperwork, distribute data quickly and stay competitive, but it allows the potential for security issues ultimately affecting business operations (Friend, 2012). The majority of data on computers and almost all communication are on a company’s computer network, and the security of the data is crucial for the success of the business. Monitoring in the workplace of computers uses a variety of software products that monitor computer networks. This software can monitor or track employee activity and productivity for a company. Using a software package for security of data in a system blocks certain websites, alert information technology staff of potential threats, such as computer viruses, monitors computers, and Internet use by employees. Companies should consider using computer monitoring software in the workplace, and do extensive research on different products and services. Some software can be costly, but it may be worth the investment to protect the integrity of a business, and the safety of the employees. Allowing employees to see the software and its capabilities...

...A negotiation is a civil process that takes place to resolve and develop a solution between all parties involved. Negotiations take place between all types of parties; organizational and global. They are structured to resolve the situation in an orderly manner with steps and strategies. In 2003, a global situation occurred that required negotiation between countries. North Korea announced they were withdrawing from the nuclear non-proliferation treaty (NPT). Upon making this announcement, they also stated they do not intend on producing nuclear weapons. This information was revealed from the official North Korean News Agency, NKNA. When this was announced, it raised red flags around the world. Even though North Korea declared the withdrawal immediate, according to Article X, countries must give a three month notice before withdrawal. North Korea made the decision to withdraw from the NPT is based on Bush’s 2003 State of the Union Address, when he declared North Korea to be part of the ‘axis of evil’ along with Iran and Iraq (Global Issues, 2006). Since the United States were preparing to invade Iraq, they felt they needed to create a credible deterrent in case they were next. The non-proliferation treaty was developed to convince countries such as Argentina, Brazil, Germany, Japan, South Africa, South Korea, and North Korea to be non-nuclear countries. The treaty was enforced in 1970 and provided the framework needed to prevent the spread of nuclear...

...from customers, over time, to identify trends that will assist in refining its processes and offerings in order to better satisfy all of their customers. Additionally, the information the Kudler Fine Foods Frequent Shopper Program collects from individual customers will be used to develop targeted offers and high value incentives to participants in the program. Before the design and implementation of this system can begin, there are many potential legal, ethical, and informational security concerns related to the development of the program that must be considered by management. Also, the effect this program will have on the organization’s structure must be considered. As stated previously, there are many legal concerns related to the implementation of Kudler Fine Foods' frequent shopper program that must be considered by management. “Most American and European privacy law is based on a regime called Fair Information Practices (FIP)” (Laudon & Laudon, 2010 p.132). The core principles of the report are already inline with Kudler Fine Foods’ Privacy policy, as outlined on the terms and conditions page of the website. By continuing to follow this policy, Kudler Fine Foods will be able to continue to avoid lawsuits from individuals, or fines from government agencies. Ethics and perception are larger concerns for Kudler Fine Foods, in part because of their customer base. Higher end customers, with delicate sensibilities, will be more concerned about how their personal information...

...Week 2 Assignment from Text – Jamie Oswalt 16-33 a. The payroll procedures at the Galena plant do contain some shortcomings. The first one is that the supervisors in the production department are not approving actual hours. Another one found is that payroll clerk seems to be in charge of most duties, which clearly signifies a lack of segregation of duties. Finally, the employee from the personnel department should not be the one to have access to the payroll checks and hold them until time for delivery. In order to fix these shortcomings and improve the internal controls of Galena’s payroll procedures, there are certain changes that should be made. All employees should sign off on their own time cards and then give the time card to his or her immediate supervisor for approval. There should also be at least two payroll clerks with different duties. One should prepare the information that will need to be processed through the payroll data processing. Another should be the one to reconcile the time cards and the payroll register. The payroll clerk should not be authorized to void and reissue checks. This should be approved at the management level. The payroll checks should be given to the accounting department for safe keeping instead of the personnel department. b. All of the shortcomings mentioned above could lead to material errors and irregularities. The lack of the segregation of duties is a material weakness. The payroll clerk could easily submit false or fictitious...

...remember. One of the most negative message that I have been fed as a female athlete and as a women pursuing a job in the sports industry is that women cannot “survive” and are “not successful” in the sports environment. I have been fed this belief by not only friends and coaches, but by my own family. While I understand their sentiment and the arguments that they present to support their case, it just continues to amaze me how women are still considered lesser athletes to this day. B. These experiences have influenced my outlook on two of the societal values mentioned in chapter one- progress and external conformity. Firstly, my outlook on progress has been taken to a much wider scope that is beyond me as an individual. I believe in the progress of teams and individual athletes that are able to move beyond the standards and stereotypes that are set in front of them. So while the book discusses progress in the light of looking towards the future, I look at progress as facing the norms head on breaking them down so the future generations do not have to deal with the burden. With my team I was able to break the stereotype that cross country was a grueling and horrible sport to participate in. As a professional, I want to be one of the people breaks the stereotype that women can’t be successful in the sports industry. Secondly is the social value of external conformity, which goes hand in hand with my version of the societal value of progress. I have been taught through my...
