...demonstrate how reflection enabled me to make sense of and learn from this experience, as well as identify any further learning developments needed to improve my practice and achieve the level of competency needed for when I qualify as an assistant practitioner. While discussing the knowledge underpinning practice, evidence based literature will be reviewed to support my discussion and for the purpose of reflection the essay will be written in the first person. Spouse, J, et al (2008). Jonhs, C (2009) defined reflection as learning through our every day experiences, towards realising one’s vision of desirable practice as a lived reality. He also added that it is a critical and a flexible process of self inquiry and transformation of being and becoming the practitioner you desire to be. However, Ghaye, T et al. (2000) stated that for the health care professionals to develop a more reflective posture, they must fully embrace both the principles and the practices of reflection. It is about becoming more aware of how we learn and how this affects what we think, feel and do. There are different models for reflection; some are more complex and detailed than others. To help me with my reflection, I have chosen Gibbs (1988) reflective cycle as a guide: The names of the patient, staff members and health care setting will be changed to protect their identity, and to abide by the Nurses and Midwifery Council code of conduct (NMC 2008). Description: Following my two week holiday, I...

...Personal reflections are characterized as learning through experience in gaining new insights and changed perception of self and practices. Reflection can be a difficult experience without the support and guidance of an expert (Johns, 2004). This personal reflection presents an exciting opportunity for me to consider how successful my placement in the intermediate care has been in terms of my own personal learning. By reflecting on the positive aspects of the placement, I will be able to make sense of my personal learning and apply what I have learnt into future careers. At the beginning of my placement I knew very little about intermediate care or services it provided regarding alternatives to hospital care for elderly patients. In preparation for my placement, I visited a local health center and spoke to a therapist who agreed to send me information about intermediate care service. I familiarized myself with the services that are offered by intermediate care, for instance in house provisions and therapist group run services. This helped to alleviate some of my anxiety about the placement that I experienced during my first week, reflecting on my experiences has helped. During my placement I was allocated a mentor who was a knowledgeable and professional nurse. I learnt so much from my mentor, especially what it takes to be a crucial member of a rapid response team of the intermediate care service. Shadowing the mentor gave me the opportunity to observe all the rapid...

...experience of learning from reflection on giving intramuscular (IM) injections, using Gibbs's (1988) reflective model. I demonstrate how practice anxiety, as a student nurse, can be dealt with through effective mentoring. I chose the seminal theory of Gibbs reflection on practice, as it illustrates six significant stages; description, feelings, evaluation, analysis of the incident, conclusion and an action plan Ghaye and Lillyman (1997). Gibbs cycle is used throughout the process of reflecting on the incident to help me make sense of my practice and understand what l could do differently to enhance good practice. I use my experience from a placement simulation as I could not be on actual placement due to unforeseen circumstances. Reflection is a process through which healthcare practitioners and students can learn from experience and use the knowledge to inform and improve practice Schon, (1983). The ability to reflect on one's actions is particularly imperative in clinical practice and discourse. As Jarvis (1992) asserted, there is no consensus on the definition of reflection as it is a broad concept. Reid (1993, p305.) define reflection as; “a course of action reviewing an occurrence of practice to describe, analyse, evaluate and so inform learning about practice” Schon (1983) identified two types of reflection which are; reflection in action, which takes place during the event where the practitioner may not be aware that it is happening and reflection on action, which takes place...

...Making the project the past couple weeks really involved a lot more self-reflection than I initially anticipated. It took a couple of hours to come up with three core values that I truly felt defined me. After finding those values, trying to discover where exactly I learned each one presented its own task as well. I noticed that we have grown up and we very much consider ourselves individuals. We like to think that we are all made uniquely and that being ourselves is a good thing socially because it provides diversity. This term project showed me that I am not as much of a unique individual as I believed. I kept observing my progress and seeing that I am merely a reflection of the important people in my life. If my parents were people who boasted and bragged, I probably wouldn’t value humility so much. If I had never experienced hardships concerning my family’s economic status, I might not have ever developed the sense of compassion that I possess today. I didn’t come out of the womb as some extremely different kid because my environment made me that way. Realizing all of these things made me appreciate the work of Geoffrey Canada that much more. Even though he’s helping out young people in Harlem, New York, I am very grateful for his overall awareness. He has done everything he can to change what those kids are reflected off of. The program that teaches young parents various things about raising a child is crucial. Because of his ability to see the services that will reflect...

...Week Five Reflection Summary MGT/311 Week Five Reflection Summary During week five, diversity in the workplace was the primary focus of our learning objectives. Over the past 60 years, as equality and worker rights have progressed immensely, diversity in the workplace has evolved significantly as well. With this significant change in workforce demographics, managers and employees have made many adjustments to not only accommodate these changes, but find ways to increase the productivity and efficiency in the workplace (Robbins & Judge, 2011). One of the most important elements in ensuring diversity is not only embraced, but capitalized on, is awareness and understanding of its limitless capabilities. Effective managers are able to analyze their workforce accurately and utilize their strengths in a highly productive, collaborative working environment. This summary will provide an overview of the strategies managers often use to manage, monitor and ensure diversity in the workplace. First, diversity management is a way of managing others with an open mind and the ability to know the needs and differences of others. Helping new employees, who are of the minority, become part of the "team" and making sure that the co-workers are helping them will cut down on the high turnover which usually can happen with minorities. There is no reason why they shouldn't feel welcomed and comfortable to stay long-term. Showing fairness to this diverse workforce is a must and cannot...

...Process Reflection of ISLLC Standard 1: Lead with Vision Laura Chavez Grand Canyon University: EDA 534 December 3, 2013 Process Reflection As I reflect on unwrapping the ISLLC Standard 1: Leading with Vision, I am pleased to say I think our team did a good job working together. This was my first experience completing an on-line group project, and it was not nearly as difficult as I thought it would be. Some of us were at a slight disadvantage with the project being assigned over the holiday which caused some group members unable to contribute much to the project. However, other members contributed more and we were able to successfully complete the assignment. What amazed me was how each of us had our own individual contributions that truly added to the finished product. When I submitted my portion of the assignment, I thought it was well done, but as each team member added his or her own input, I realized I had missed some things. The additions enhanced the meaning of the standard and aided in successful completion and met the standards set forth by the rubric. Needless to say, I am quite pleased with my group! This process has made me realize that shared leadership really can work. I tend to rely on myself. That being said, I took it upon myself to get the group started with the “working document.” However, since I was required to collaborate with others, I witnessed the benefit of sharing the task which ended...
