Business Communication Concepts
Life is changing faster than can be imagined and the way we do business is changing as well. Today’s flourishing business community communicates through the continual advancement of changing technology. The major component of running a successful business is excellent communication. In this paper, the role of business communication in day-to-day activities, the communication trends in the workplace, and the results of these trends will be explored. Effective communication skills play a key role in the outcome of day-to-day activities in both the workplace and in your personal life. Effective communication is a priceless trait that can help a person’s business career flourish. Employers know that they benefit from hiring employees with the ability to communicate well. With unemployment at a all time high it is beneficial for job seekers to refine their communication skills, especially since communication is essential in virtually all areas of today’s business world. In my day-to-day activities, the role of business communication helps me with discipline by providing me the ability to stay on track and complete projects without being distracted throughout the course of the day. I am able to take advantage of diverse opportunities, enjoy life, and still be productive. Email for me is one of the best tools ever invented because it assists me with my day-to-day time management. Managing my daily activities with good communication in a business setting and a social setting is almost identical except the business communication is more formal. According to Locker and Kienzler (2008), business communication consists of 10 business communication trends that influence business. These communication trends include changes within technology such as, a focus on quality and customer needs, entrepreneurship, teamwork, diversity, globalization, legal and ethical concerns, balancing work and family, job flexibility, and the rapid rate of change. All of these trends play an enormous role within business communication.
Since retiring from the government over ten years ago technology has made tremendous advancement in communication that has changed the way we do business. In fact, as history has shown business communication trends can change in a matter of a few days with the advancement in technology. For example, Facebook just last week announced some new exciting changes in the way they will conduct business communication. When I worked for the government there was always a communication paper trail, now everything is going paperless and green. In the old business model, time zones guided the way you conducted business and now time does not stand in the way of being productive. Today all cultures and regions are coming together creating one huge global workforce.
In the past, communication took much longer to reach a person; a secretary would take dictation of a letter by hand, manually type the letter using a typewriter, and then literally have to mail the information out. Now a personal assistant can prepare a letter and send via email, a mass-text, or even twitter. Meetings no longer require face-to-face communication. We now have video conferencing services, on-line conferencing services, and the latest Skype trend that allows users to make voice, video calls and chats over the Internet.
The trends of video conferences and personal digital assistants (PDA’s) in today’s workplaces have resulted in the message type trends such as e-mail, instant messages, and text messages even being further expedited. All of these trends have increased the productivity in the workplace. Business communication has moved to social networking sites like on-line business profile web sites, MySpace, Facebook, and Twitter where blogs can be posted for job recruitment and online applications can be received. This technology allows businesses to network more rapidly and on a more personal level. Personal digital assistants (PDAs) like I-Phones and Blackberry’s allow employees to have complete access to their e-mail and the Internet allowing them to instantly make telephone calls and conduct business 24 hours a day.
In today’s business world, communicating timely is particularly important. Trends in business communication have changed from sending memos or writing letters. Today with the technological revolution, business communication has gone global by the utilization of emails and on-line conferencing. Businesses today must keep up with the latest trends in business communication in order to grow. Employees also need training and must maintain current knowledge of the use of these technological devices in order to be productive. An effective communication system today plays an important role in business success.
In this paper, the way in which business communication is dispersed in your day-to-day work activities, the globalization of business interaction and the conservation of time was examined. Discussion of how new technological trends such as shared Skype has literally changed the way in which information is transmitted. Messaging trends such as e-mail, instant messages, and text messages has likewise increased the workplace productivity. Now social networking is the face of on-line technology with the utilization of MySpace, Facebook, and Twitter. Finally, personal digital assistants (PDAs) have revolutionized the business communication world by allowing business to be conducted 24 hours a day.
