Week Four Reflection
This week’s consensus is overwhelmingly a feeling of clarity as compared to last week. Our team feels much more comfortable with statements of cash flows and financial statement analysis than with dividends, bonds, etc. The following are individual reflections on what we learned during week four.
I think this week was easier for me than others because of the simplicity behind the terms. The statements of cash flows include operating activities, investing activities and financing activities. Operating activities include cash flow from business operations, things like sales. Investing activities includes assets, and financing activities include stockholders equity. We learned about direct and indirect cash flows this week. Indirect cash flows are the most commonly used by business and consist of three major steps: (1) determine net cash, (2) figure changes in asset and liability accounts, and (3) compare the figures on the statement of cash flows to the balance sheet.
The second topic of this week was in regards to financial statement analysis. What this means is using financial statements in three different ways of comparison. The three ways are intracompany, industry and intercompany. The analysis of financial statements can be viewed horizontally, vertically or with ratios. Horizontally refers to over course of time, vertically refers to the change in figures, the difference between current and base amounts. The different ratios will help when determining a company’s profitability, liquidity and solvency.
This week was little easier for me than the previous weeks. Bonds have always been confusing to me, and I am still a little confused about them. It was interesting to me to learn about the different types of payroll deductions. I never actually knew what took place in payroll

Successful Students

...Tips for Successful Students Throughout my whole life, I can always remember time management being a strong point, whether it be in school or work. The statement, “you will either control time or be controlled by it” (Lake, A. & von Baeyer, C. 2005) has always lingered in the back of my mind, as my parents would say this to me often when trying to balance life, school, and work. Having a strong sense of time management has given me the ability to balance whatever it is I am confronted with. Whether it be finding time to do school assignments while working full time and also continuing my busy life, or whether it be passing meds, doing dressing changes, placing a foley, and admitting a patient all within a busy hour, time management is essential. Not only does it allow for a less-stressful flow, it also allows me to accomplish my tasks in a timely fashion and feel organized and in-control of what I am doing. I feel having this characteristic as a strong point will help me in this course because not only do I work full-time at night, but I also- like most other students- have a busy life surrounding me as well. Being able to manage what is laid out in front of me will assist in me being a successful student, without neglecting work or my personal life. Procrastination isn’t in the equation for being successful, as leaving tasks for later can lead to mistakes or to be forgotten. Scheduling your time can only be done by you; Do it wisely. (Richie S. & Alspaugh, L. 2011). ...

Anime/ Bad Influence on All Children Under 13

...Since the 1960s anime has boomed into a world wide label for cartoons. However, these cartoons can be a bad influence for children of a certain age, poor examples for viewers to follow, and has not established any creative guide lines. During the past decade or so anime has boomed into entertainment for many different age groups. From a giant robot battle in space to fighting ninjas with deadly weapons, ninjutsu, and giant foxes fighting giant snakes and frogs, anime reaches out to many audiences. When children under the age of thirteen see this stuff they may attempt to try it them-self, and with no parent to tell them what is real and what is not, then it may be attempted by the viewer. If a child under thirteen reads the manga (anime books) and some one is reading it with them, then that adult supervision can protect them from bad influences that might see. An adult needs to be with the child while watching the anime series or reading the book. Without parental viewing then the child will not know that the violence in the anime, or manga books should not be imitated in the real world. In fact a child died while mimicking Gaara. (from what I know, his friends burried his head in a sand box) this is off of a show called Naruto other anime such as this are know as Bleach, Inuyasha, Death Note has a warning, but is not strong or specific. If a child can imitate this there is no telling what else will happen next. If a child under thirteen watches these shows and does not imitate...

National Enquirer is a supermarket tabloid founded in 1926; founded William Radolph Hearst. In 1926 the paper was known as New York Enquirer and then purchased in 1952 by Generoso Pope, Jr. Pope purchased the paper and used strategic marketing skills by establishing the paper into supermarkets racks across the country in the 70's. Pope knew the paper to be successful he needed to pay the highest pay to top notch reporters and editors to produce, write, and manage the paper to be the best in its field. This practice may not result in writing what always measures up to the journalistic standards of a magazine such as People, it does allow the Enquirer to cover a broad range of topics, and it enables timely responses to events that often result in news scoops . The success of Pope's strategic marketing skills not everyone found this paper to be tactful and find it offensive; however, the papers success is successful from being an attention grabber, loud and graphic. Jonathan Livingston Seagull Reflection

...Jonathan Livingston Seagull Richard Bach The novel Jonathan Livingston Seagull is a very fantastic novel. I have judged this novel very wrongly because I really thought that’s it’s all just about a dump of boring seagulls that search for enlightenment and predictably ends finding it. But it wasn’t! It suddenly became one of my favorite novels of all time. Living in this world full of people, pretending to be something they’re not, I realized that every one of us is trying to fit in. For me, this novel will really help out those people who fear to be uncovered and I should know. This novel is all about creativity and individuality. To stand up for something you strongly believe in is really brave indeed. Creativity, I should say, makes us smarter. Routine living dulls our mind. Creative expression gives our brain a workout, activating new circuits in our grey matter. Creativity does not necessarily require an act of will or sweat on the brow. It’s about getting beyond logic and to see more than meets the eye. Creativity asks us to change the way we live our lives, to turn away from the “normal” way of doing things and express individuality. Conformity isn’t creative. Neither is routine. Jonathan did exactly the same. He turned away from the norm and started up all on his own as an outcast. Later, he found out the true meaning of life which is to touch perfection and show it forth. All this he learned in a very dramatic way. He meets this powerful seagull, Chiang...

Seagull

...------------------------------------------------- Plot The book tells the story of Jonathan Livingston Seagull, a seagull who is bored with the daily squabbles over food. Seized by a passion for flight, he pushes himself, learning everything he can about flying, until finally his unwillingness to conform results in his expulsion from his flock. An outcast, he continues to learn, becoming increasingly pleased with his abilities as he leads an idyllic life. One day, Jonathan is met by two gulls who take him to a "higher plane of existence" in that there is no heaven but a better world found through perfection of knowledge, where he meets other gulls who love to fly. He discovers that his sheer tenacity and desire to learn make him "pretty well a one-in-a-million bird." In this new place, Jonathan befriends the wisest gull, Chiang, who takes him beyond his previous learning, teaching him how to move instantaneously to anywhere else in the Universe. The secret, Chiang says, is to "begin by knowing that you have already arrived." Not satisfied with his new life, Jonathan returns to Earth to find others like him, to bring them his learning and to spread his love for flight. His mission is successful, gathering around him others who have been outlawed for not conforming. Ultimately, the very first of his students, Fletcher Lynd Seagull, becomes a teacher in his own right and Jonathan leaves to teach other flocks. Part One Part One of the book finds young Jonathan Livingston frustrated...

Jonathan Livingston Seagull

...This is a story for people who follow their dreams and make their own rules; a story that has inspired people for decades. For most seagulls, life consists simply of eating and surviving. Flying is just a means of finding food. However, Jonathan Livingston Seagull is no ordinary bird. For him, flying is life itself. Against the conventions of seagull society, he seeks to find a higher purpose and become the best at doing what he loves. This is a fable about the importance of making the most of our lives, even if our goals run contrary to the norms of our flock, tribe or neighbourhood. Through the metaphor of flight, Jonathan’s story shows us that, if we follow our dreams, we too can soar. ‘Richard Bach with this book does two things. He gives me Flight. He makes me Young.
