STUDENT REPONSE FOR WEEK

The two words emergency and disaster do send shivers down my spine, when thinking about them. After reading your post I was able to break down the word emergency even more. So I am sure we can agree emergency could be anything that is posing a risk to someone’s life. These specific emergencies require a response team to take immediate action, whereas for example an emergency pertaining to the environment would not. There are specific authorities that may not respond to the danger of a persons or animals life. Fires and tornados are not considered an emergency. There is something called a state of emergency which is when the government declares an emergency in a specific state. An example of this, back in 2011 there was heavy rains in the state of New York. Due to water rises long the river there was mass flooding. The water was coming well over the flood walls. This was a danger, so a state of emergency was called. People were being evacuated, and sent to shelters that were being run by FEMA. There is management of emergencies agencies and is divided into 4 possible categories: state of preparedness, quick response, recovery, and mitigation. When comparing emergency and disaster I have brainstormed additional defenses, one can prepare for an emergency when disaster one cannot. Emergencies can be on a scale from small to large whereas disasters are always large. If there is an emergency like a small fire that can be handled by the local fire department, but when there is a wildfire that requires more action from the administration because serious damage can occur to property and people’s lives in this specific circumstance. The closest related word to disaster is phenomenon, and impacts a large number of people as a whole.
