...CASE STUDY: CHALLENGES OF CHOOSING A NEW BOARD CHAIR 1. What issues does this Board have? The major issue which the Board of Welcome Communities is facing is that they do not have a strong leadership Board Chair to lead and make strategic decisions for the organization. There are several internal weaknesses of the Board that causes this problem. Many other things need to be considered as well. First, the structure of the Board and the responsibilities of the seats are not clearly defined. Based on the case, we can see that the organization did not develop a board structure to guide the job distribution right from the beginning. This should have been done in order to be sure that the board members will not be confused about the job responsibilities. A well-structured board should include at least five branches: a Board Chair, and four Committees specializing in Finance, Development, Human Resources, and Funding. However, in this case, Umberto took on the job of seeking donors’ support instead of supervising each committee’s duty. Furthermore, because he did not set a good example of a Board Chair, and the other members on the board are not able to fully understand what the job responsibilities consist of. Therefore, the members grow concerned about what the job entails of, which leads to only one member willing to step up for nomination. The unclear job definition also causes a passive attitude in the Board. Each member seems to want to cut back a little on their involvement...

...Brown V Board Of Education May 17, 1954 was a date that had an impact on the board of education and our lives. There was an African American girl named Linda Brown, she was a normal girl in the third grade. Linda went to a school that was a mile away even though there was an all white elementary school, seven blocks away. Her father, Oliver Brown, tried to enroll her in the white elementary school, but the principal of the school refused to let her in due to her race. Mr. Brown then took this problem to the NAACP ( National Association for the Advancement of Colored People), they agreed to help him. As this case became more known it was then later brought up to supreme court. Other cases have led up to this case, these cases included, Sweat v. Painter (1950) and McLaurin v. Oklahoma Board of Regents of Higher Education (1950). The cases leading up to Brown Vs Board of Education featured African American people dealing with segregation problems. Brown argued segregation is seen as antithetical to our whole culture. If a particular class of people are forced to stay in their own neighborhoods, have their own schools, parks, stores, restaurants, movie theaters, and not welcome in 'mainstream' places, they are not equal as citizens. This is a violation of the 'equality' provisions of the 14th amendment. One of the most basic founding principles of the US is that we have only one class of citizenship, every citizen is entitled to exactly the same rights and privileges of citizenship...

The story of Oliver brown whom her daughter was denied admission to a white school blocks from her home rather than attending a black school couples of miles away from her home. Thus, Brown stood up and strived to eradicate this system of segregation between whites and black in schools. This specific issue was treated seriously and it led to what is known as Brown v. ...Cerrillo, as the new Chief executive officer of Tomorrows Products, the Accounting Department would like to welcome you to the company. We would also like to stress how important it is for our company financial statements to be accurate as possible for our Board of Directors meetings at the end of every month. As the Chief Financial Officer, I would like to extend any help from the Accounting Department to assist you at anytime you feel you have any discrepancies in our statements. The owner brought to my attention in our last board of directors meeting that you were having minor issues with the reports; I want to setup a meeting with you to show you specific tools that you can use to analyze the companies financial statements. I would like to point out the three main ratio analysis we use for analysis of primary financial statements, the profitability, liquidity, and solvency ratios. Profitability ratios measure the income or operating success of a company for a given period of time. For example, from the last income statement I emailed to you Wednesday, you will notice that the companies sales increased by net income decreased during the period. To evaluate the companies profitability we will use ratio analysis. The liquidity ratio measures the short term ability of the company to pay its maturing obligations and to meet unexpected needs for cash. In this case you will use one liquidity ratio, current ratio, which is computed as current assets divided by current liabilities...

...Professor: Gooding Students and welcome. Today we have Officer Derrick Stogner visiting us from our local state penitentiary. He and I will be doing a little Q & A on some questions that were provided and selected from you guys earlier in the week. So without further ado let us just dive right in and get started. Professor: How does the prison environment influence security and custody in your prison? Me: Hello everyone and hello professor. Well the prison environment is unlike anything a person not affiliated with the correctional institute has experienced. You must always at all times be on guard and vigilante because you never know what a person will do who is in that type of situation. With that being said we have implemented security features to help us combat and prevent attacks both on other prisoners and guards. We have daily inspections, security cameras almost everywhere, security checkpoints at everywhere entrance to any part of the building both inside and out, armed guards in towers, and along the perimeter of the building, dogs on standby, SWAT like teams in case something happens that needs to be controlled, a minimum of two guards per person being moved anywhere as the prisoner will be in both hand chains and leg chains, as well as spit mask if necessary. It is a hostile environment and must be treated as such at all times. We are outnumbered in there and the prisoners know it. They live there day in and day out and they learn everything they...

...Gorby Case Study: IT Project Implementation Failures The case study of the Memorial Health System and their CPOE implementation poses many issues that contributed to their IT failure. The first issue I noticed was the unrealistic timeline developed by the original champions Dryer and Roberts. Dryer and Roberts planned to execute their new IT among eight hospitals in less than eighteen months. With their failure to respect uncertainty from members of the discussion board, they demanded and rushed results from their clinical and IT team. This resulted in a rushed out requirements analysis, request for proposal quickly issued, and a rush to select the vendor and signing the contract. When the original champions were replaced by Lu and Sparks, I initially thought they were capable of successfully pulling off implementing this system even in the short timeframe. They would probably have been successful if Sparks did not lack candor. The executive project manager, Martin, had a perfectly thorough and detailed a project plan that most likely would have guided the organization to success if they followed her suggestions. Spark’s lack of candor and anger to Martin’s project plan lead her to lie about the truth and withhold important progress information on the project. At the end of the eighteen month timeline, the go live date resulted in failure due to all of these issues. With an organization like ours, there are several ways to reduce an IT failure like the case study...
