The article, “Welcome to Skateistan” by Kathy Wilmore is about children who are living in places of war being able to have fun. Oliver Percovich is running the Skateistan program to give children more opportunity and a chance to live like kids. A central idea I found was despite the war going on in Kabul, kids have found sanctuary within the Skateistan program. Another central idea I found was Skateistan is a program for all types of people. The central idea, despite the war going on in Kabul, kids have found sanctuary within the Skateistan program can be backed up with evidence. In the article, it states, “Shrieks of laughter mix with the rattle and clack of skateboard wheels...” (Wilmore) This shows that the kids are enjoying themselves even in the war-struck Afghanistan. There is more evidence to go along with this. This is the first time most of the kids have seen a skateboard, the article says, “Until five years ago, none of them have ever seen a skateboard, let alone ridden one.” (Wilmore) This shows that they are not exposed to much beyond the war. They likely don’t have many toys so when they saw the skateboard, their faces brightened. It must be hard to raise a family in Kabul during the war and Skateistan helps with that too. The article says, “Once a Skateistan student, she’s now a paid instructor and able to support her family.” (Wilmore) This shows that Skateistan is helping in more ways than just making the kids happy. Another central idea developed across this text is Skateistan is a program for all kinds of people. There are…show more content… These are explained through the central ideas that kids have found sanctuary in Skateistan, and that all people are accepted in Skateistan. Both of these ideas show how families and kids are being affected by Skateistan in a positive manner. They are finally getting the chance to be kids
