...Summative Assessment The Secret Sharer and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time Rationale For my English course we studied two texts, The Secret Sharer by Joseph Conrad, and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon. I decided to write on The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time because I think the book has an interesting and unique plot. I have chosen to write three diary entries. This text type is appropriate because diaries are personal and reveal feelings that contribute to the furthering of the plot. The purpose of my characters diary entries is to reveal their inner emotions and feelings. The intended audience for the diary entries are the characters themselves, as only they will read their diary. I will write three diary entries in the characters of Christopher, Father and Mother. I have deliberately used swear words in Father’s diary entry as he swears a lot throughout the book, and it reflects his personality. As Mother misspells many words in her letters to Christopher, I use clumsy spelling in her diary entry, to present her the way the reader knows her from the book. Father’s Diary Hello Dairy, I can’t believe Christopher is still poking around in other people’s business after I told him several bloody times to mind his own f*&%ing business. I have to think of something fast. He’s a clever boy. He could find out, he could find out about everything. I can’t let that happen. Maybe if I hadn’t killed...

“a Great Reforming Home Secretary”: Discuss This Judgement on Peel

...“A great reforming Home Secretary”: Discuss this judgement on Peel: INTRO: Sir Robert Peel was Home Secretary between the years of 1822 and 1827, under Lord Liverpool’s premiership, and then served in the cabinet of the Duke of Wellington from 26th January 1828, until November 1830. There is no doubt that Robert Peel’s performance as Home Secretary was remarkable in many ways, although the nature of his role and his successfulness has been questioned and analysed by historians and politicians alike, even Canning, who did not agree with Peel on many issues at the time described him as “the most efficient home secretary that this country ever saw”. An judgement of Peel’s performance as Home Secretary can be accurately reached when his performance in three main policy areas is analysed: these are, his amendments to criminal law, the law and order system, and his performance during the Catholic Emancipation crisis. To reform, one must make changes to something in order to improve it, and in this sense Peel has to be mostly credited. In law and order is where Peel seemed to make his most significant improvements, this can also be said for amendments to the existing, illogical, criminal laws in Britain, many of which he saw as unnecessary and so changed them. It was in the midst of the Catholic Emancipation crisis, however, where Peel was forced to defy his principles and lost a number of allies in the process, all to a largely politically detrimental effect. Napoleon and the Battle of Waterloo

...under the command of the Duke of Wellington, and the other a Prussian army under the command of Gebhard von Blücher. Many people say that the Battle of Waterloo was the culminating battle of the Waterloo Campaign and Napoleon's last battle ever. When he was defeated at Waterloo, he lost his title as Emperor. Waterloo itself is just a small town a few miles south of Brussels, Belgium. It's an inconspicuous town, with a church, some inns, and a few homes and old stone farmhouses with lots of open fields. The Battle of Waterloo, as it has come to be known, is always included on lists of battles that changed the course of history. Napoleon was considered one of the greatest generals ever, yet he is often defined by this one terrific loss at the end of his career. The word has entered our language: when someone has met their Waterloo, it means they’ve been finally defeated. The Battle of Waterloo began with Napoleon being declared an outlaw by the Congress of Vienna. They did not like Napoleon because he had declared himself emperor. Also, he was marching on Paris, in his bid to solidify his role as Emperor. Waterloo, it turned out, was not only a strategic point on the road to Paris, but it was built such that it made a good battlefield. That Sunday, the generals of the two armies didn’t seem to head to battle with much urgency. The Duke of Wellington rose around 02:00 or 03:00 on the morning and wrote letters until dawn. After 06:00 Wellington was out supervising the deployment...
