Wendell Mendell gives us a great explanation of how space exploration has transformed from being a race to the moon and back, to being commercialized for telecommunications. The motivation that got the ball rolling on this was a presidential speech that was given by John F. Kennedy. There was much speculation of how things would progress after successfully landing on the moon and how we could use the moon as a place to learn to "develop a human space flight program" (Wendell). Budgets made things much harder to progress and opinions of whether or not NASA could manage such projects was in question.
