Wernher Von Braun: This scientist was a former member of the SS in Germany, or a translation of Protective Echelon. They served as Adolf Hitler’s bodyguards and were one of the most feared groups during World War 2. After the war, Braun engineered the surrender of 500 of his best rocket scientists and they were scooped up via Operation Paperclip, installed in Fort Bliss, Texas. Von Braun was the leader of the rocket mission in the United States for developing the V-2 rocket, the first ballistic missile ever made, which initiated a lot of the missions not only in the US but in the Soviet Union as well as ideas were exchanged. He later became the director of the Army Ballistic Missile Agency. Here, he developed the Jupiter C rocket, used to launch America’s first satellite, as well as being heavily involved in the moon mission. Additionally, Braun became director of NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center and chief of architect of the Saturn V launch vehicle, which would boost Americans on their moon journey. Under the authority of Wernher Von Braun, Werner Dahm contributed greatly to American research after being recruited via Operation Paperclip. This included work on the V-2 ballistic missile, Saturn V booster rocket, aerothermodynamics, and liquid hydrogen propellant systems. The team proceeded to help launch America’s NASA program once developed and Dahm worked on Marshall as well where he continued to work on the Saturn V rocket which a decade later sent Americans to the moon. The Soviet’s failure to build a comparable launcher played a role in the abandonment of putting humans on the moon. He continued to work on projects like the space shuttle and Skylab.
