...Description: Lt. General Sidney Berry, Superintendent of the United States Military Academy at West Point has been faced with a series of difficult decisions after being notified of underclassmen at the campus where caught cheating, a violation of the Cadet Honor Code with the Academy. All cadets that are found guilty by the Honor System are subject to expulsion. The decisions Berry is faced with raises issues concerning ethics, organizational adjustment and change, and action planning to tackle the arising conflict. Through acting in the best wishes of West Point’s standards, Lt. General Berry must also heavily consider the interests of the Department of the Army, Congress, West Point alumni, current cadets on campus, and the public with the gaining acknowledgement of the incident. Diagnosis: Throughout the incident, questions arised in a variety of avenues regarding West Point’s standards and the possibility of misalignment of the discipline displayed versus the objectives of the Academy. Questions such as whether the Honor Code was to general to the extent of not being able to evenly and fairly enforce conduct or whether constitutional guarantees of due process were considered during the adjudication of disputes arising under the Honor Code. This incident could also be simply a result of cadets pushing the limits of the Academy of what they are and aren’t able to get away with; much like a child is with his or her parental figures. ...June 9, 2013 A study by Dufresne and Offstien, 2012 highlighted the application of ethical training in developing students in becoming model citizens of society. The authors undertook a qualitative research of West Point, an institution based in the United States of America that focuses mainly on training cadets to be commissioned into the United States Army (Dufresne & Offstien, 2012) . The article presented a background on ethics and highlighted a number of cases involving companies that have been cited for ethical breaches. In developing the background to the research, landmark court cases were cited and the relatedness to the research was presented. Included in the background discussion is a brief summary of West Point. This gives the reader an opportunity to understand the rational for selecting the institution of the research. The primary research question; “to better understand how West Point engages in character development of its students to inform how schools of business may learn from this model” was noted (Dufresne & Offstien, 2012). The methods employed in doing the qualitative research were established. The authors indicated the use of an anthropological and phenomenological orientation. The purpose for using these methods was explained and reference cited. The data collection methods included observation, interviews, and documents as primary data sources and involved an integrative and iterative data analysis using triangulation as well...

...My review was based on different smart phones and its effect or importance. I did my review on the iPhone and BlackBerry which are two major players in the smart phone market today. The BlackBerry was catered more to the business customers while the iPhone was catered more to the media seeking demographic. Articles that were reviewed by me were written by West & Mace, Groggin, and Middleton. Each article dealt with different smart phones and different effects it has on our lives. With the introduction of mobile devices such as smart phones, the work place is now taken home. According to Middleton “The BlackBerry does give its users a mechanism to exert control over the management of daily communication tasks, but by virtue of its always-on, always-connected nature, it is also reinforces cultures that expect people to be accessible outside normal business hours”.(Middleton 2007) Since the introduction of the device in 1999, the BlackBerry has made a name for itself as a mobile e-mail device for business. The study done by Middleton was to see if using the BlackBerry device in the context of work-life would lead to increase in work-life conflict, and would result in detrimental organization outcomes. The research method that was used was qualitative a qualitative interview with 13 Canadian BlackBerry users. The respondents were chosen through a network of business contacts. They come from different industries, level of job seniority, and their age ranges from mid-20 to...

...Clash of Civilizations In 1993 Samuel Huntington wrote an article titled “Is there a clash of civilizations”. The thesis was very much born in the context of the end of the cold war. The idea of “clash of civilizations” suggests that twenty-first century global order will be characterized by growing tension and conflict between rival cultures or civilizations, as opposed to the political, ideological or economic conflict of old. Huntington furthermore argued that the world was split into 9 different civilizational orders, and the West would clash with all of them, but in particular it would clash with the Islamic world, Japan and Russia. The realists have given little attention to the issue of identity or cultural politics. They focus on the behavior of states. However the liberals have recognized this thesis to some extent. Huntington’s view that the West would clash with the Islamic world was vindicated after the September 11th terrorist attacks, neoconservatives looking for a response distanced themselves from Huntington’s rhetoric. Neoconservative George W Bush was keen to emphasize that not all Muslims were to blame for 9/11, and indeed it was just a tiny minority of extremists holding the Islamic world back. Whereas Huntington had argued that the Islamic world was hostile to western ideas of liberal democracy, George W Bush ignored this insight and fought two wars to try and bring democracy to the Middle East, ignoring Huntington’s claim that there would be a backlash...

...CASE 3.4 Rumstad Decorating Centers (B) Rumstad Decorating Centers was an old-line Rockford, Illinois, business. The company was originally founded as a small paint and wallpaper supply store in 1929 by Joseph Rumstad, who managed the store until his retirement in 1970, at which time Jack Rumstad, his son, took over. In 1974, the original downtown store was closed and a new outlet was opened on the city’s rapidly expanding west side. In 1996, a second store was opened on the east side of the city and the name of the business was changed to Rumstad Decorating Centers. Jack Rumstad’s review of 1997 operations proved disconcerting. Both stores had suffered losses for the rear (see Case 2.1, Rumstad Decorating Centers [A]). The picture was far more dismal at the west-side store. Losses at the east-side store were 80 percent less than the previous year’s, which was partially due to some major organizational changes. Further the east-side store had experienced a 25 percent increase in net sates and a 25 percent increase in gross profits over 1996. The west-side store, in contrast, had shown a 21 percent decrease in net sales and a 31 percent decrease in gross profit. Some preliminary research by Rumstad suggested that the problem at the west-side store might be traced to the store’s location or its advertising. Was the location perceived as convenient? Were potential customers aware of Rumstad Decorating Centers, the products they carried, and where they were located...

...It's all about setting the table right. There's no point making a mistake and then overwhelming the guest with a flurry of apologies. All this may sound trivial, but this emphasis on systems has probably lead to Indian Hotels being chosen as a case study by Harvard Business School. It all began last September when IHL's senior V-P (human resources) Bernard Martyris took part in a 12-day HBS executive programme on HR management with 80 participants from 26 countries. While most of the participants shared notes on common issues, the cultural aspect of HRD often came up for discussion. Using the experience of his own company, Martyris talked about how IHL had moved from a work ethos, which was relationship-based (especially during the Kerkar days) to one which now depends on solid systems and is more task-oriented. According to Martyris, IHL has been selected as a case study because the evolution of systems in aspects like work ethos, leadership and cultural change can be traced from its relation-based roots to its current systemic form. The IHL case study will be introduced in the Strategic Management Course and will be a part of the core MBA programme and not just the multiple short-term courses which HBS offers. Professor of organisational behaviour at HBS Thomas J Delong said that though he rarely takes up a case study in HR with a participant, this time he saw the opportunities and processes to unite a case. Apart from being able to trace the evolution of systems, HBS...

Lee & co., 1878. Summary Henry Ossian Flipper was the first African American to graduate from the U.S. Military Academy (West Point). Born March 21, 1856, in Thomasville, Georgia, Flipper was the son of Festus Flipper and his wife Isabelle, both of whom were enslaved. Flipper's parents' master took the family to Atlanta where, after Emancipation, Henry Flipper was educated. In 1873, following his studies at American Missionary Association schools and Atlanta University (now Clark Atlanta University), Flipper obtained an appointment to the U.S. Military Academy. While African American cadets had been admitted to West Point previously, Flipper was the first to graduate from the Academy, receiving his degree on June 14, 1877. Finishing fiftieth out of a class of sixty-four, Flipper was given the rank of 2nd Lieutenant and assigned to the all-African American Tenth Cavalry. While serving in Texas and what is now Oklahoma, Flipper was involved in engineering and mining projects, including draining swamps, building wagon roads and installing telegraph lines. In 1880, he fought against the Apache chief Victorio and earned a commendation. ...wasn’t much of an effort put into this issue at first and it was overwhelming for NJ because this service all depended on county sheriffs and his constables and more often not this burden was too much for the local sheriffs. Legislation for the creation of the New Jersey State Police came in 1914 but it was not until March 29, 1921 that the State Police Bill was passed, stating that a Statewide Police force was intact. The man who passed the bill was Senator Clarence I. Case who was nicknamed the “Father of the State Police”. NJ would hire Norman Schwarzkopf, Sr. as their first superintendent of the New Jersey State Police who would have the biggest impact on the first State Troopers. Schwarzkopf was a graduate of the military academy West Point and his style of training of the first State Troopers was heavily influenced by his time at West Point. In fact, the motto of the State Police was taken on from West Point Academy’s motto. The State Troopers motto which you can on the uniform says “Honor, Duty, Fidelity” and West Point’s was “Duty, Honor, Country". Also the father of superintendent...
