Question
What advice would you give Cassidy about how communications to employees are structured as Westwood?
Response
Cassidy has been given a difficult situation that must be dealt with. This issue not included a major announcement about voluntary severance and early retirement, but the fact that the CEO Linda Bosworth would not be present when the announcement of this new program would be made. Communication is the center of both of these issues. While Westwood Publishing obviously has forms of communication; memo’s and an intranet site; updated forms of communication would be helpful in both these cases. Stated in the case is that the intranet site is not updated on a regular basis, therefore town hall meetings and memos are used to deliver messages to the employees. The first issue is the fact that this program would force some employees into early retirement, a change that would not be received well by the employees and the fact that the CEO Linda Bosworth would not be present when the announcement would be made. It is said that large companies are already perceived as being faceless and unfeeling, and this is compounded when there is no upward communication from employees to management. (Argenti, 2009) Part one of the advice given would be to improve upon updating the company’s intranet site, as well as investing in new ways of communication. The advice given to Cassidy would be to ask CEO Linda Bosworth to reconsider being present in some form during the announcement of the voluntary severance and early retirement plan. Cassidy could suggest that Bosworth be present by venue of a web conference, in which she could be seen by the employees as well as being able to view the employees. In an article written by Char Booth, concerning VoIP, it is stated that “ Digital communication has advanced to the degree that (some) participation in (a few) professional organizations is no longer (totally) limited by physical distance.” (Booth, 2010) This means Westwood Publishing would do well to invest in the VoIP or possibly another form of video conferencing. According to an article in Mechanical Engineering manager should consider using today’s web conferencing tools, which are useful for team meetings when you have members of the team that don’t work in a traditional office, but may work from a home office. (Thilmany, 2008) Most employees, while not completely satisfied could be placated by the fact that the CEO cared enough to “show her face” so to speak during such a monumental announcement.
Biblical Integration
In life one is often taught to look after ones own self interest, to put oneself first. By using newer communication tools in which Bosworth could be virtually present would show concern and would also adhere to the scripture found in Philippians 2:4, which says, “ Let each of you look out not only for his interests, but also for the interest of others”. Being present would be a sure sign that Bosworth is concerned about how the voluntary severance and early retirement announcement would affect the employees.

Subcultre Essay

...SUBCULTURES AND STYLE Here I am going to be discussing design through subcultures mainly focusing on Punk and Skinheads and the design of a Dr Marten boot displayed in the Museum of London. Between the years of 1945 and 1985 right after World War 2 there was a lot of changes in how different people grouped themselves in cultures and styles. People formed an almost cult of whom had interests and views which where similar and showed this by making a some what territory of a certain street or area. This was called a subculture. Teddy Boys originated around the 1950’s after World War 2 when there was no longer a uniform had to be worn; it was a way to rebel against it. The style was more common among the wealthier society who could afford smart clothing; they were often associated with American rock. Next came Mod’s, they were all about pure style, dressing smart and sharp with bold haircuts. Around the same time rockers and the grunge style was popular which caused a lot of controversy with the Mod’s and the Grunge scene and known to fight frequently. In the 1960s skinheads formed from an influence of Jamaican rude boys who were known for the edge and anti mainstream desire. Skinheads were all about being cool, known to wear doc martins and have very short-shaved heads, even the girls. Later on in the 80s this culture rose again but this group were much more racist and violent than the original skinheads. Influenced by mod’s then came the soul boy in the 1970s, known...

Agent Provocateur

...luxury lingerie the world over. It has become the epitome of upmarket couture lingerie - Agent Provocateur. The company had very humble beginnings and set out to do something completely different than what it has become today a ‘brand’. Founded in 1994 by Joseph Corre and his ex-wife Serena Rees, Joseph Corre saw that the state of fashionable or ‘sexy’ lingerie was pretty much non-existent in the UK market and as he says that he was absolutely disappointed after a visit to an Ann Summers store and thought the state of fashionable or sexy underwear could be changed altogether. What is intriguing I would say is that Joseph Corre having come from a very illustrious background, being the son of Vivienne Westwood and music manager Malcolm Mclaren, Joseph Corre worked for Vivienne Westwood previously before deciding to identify this potential gap in the market. The initial idea of the founder was to start a store that stocked creations from other brands, things that were too erotic for mainstream and at the same time acceptable by women. Having travelled to Paris and Los Angeles Joseph realized that even if he wanted to stock the lingerie he had the vision for there was nobody that was making it during this time period. Design and manufacturing or for that matter creating their own line was never really part of the plan for the now leading player in its niche. They set up their first store on December 8th 1994 on Broadwick St, Soho in London. Joseph recognized that women were just recovering...

Quirky Chic

...this season of deciding which styles would be a total knock out and those of a fashion faux pas. Besides tartan, I found the ultimate alternative look this season. Perching along fashion’s front row, peering among the silk dresses and the sinister furs, Vivienne Westwood struck me the most with her distinctive styles; some so distracting and embellished, they completed the entire show. The admirable retro appearance re-born back from the 80’s when the fashion influences were, Dynasty and Dallas, big hair, gold, glamour, glitz and shoulder pads. As the models strutted their way past the audience, I found the styles seemingly sensuous but in fact artfully constructed skirts and dresses that hung beautifully from the coat-hanger figures; Grecian dresses complimented smeared red lipstick with heavy black eye shadow, it felt like one had gone back to their teen days and stumbled upon a massive rave. Deprived of the modern wardrobe staple - the elegant skirts, subtle shirts and slender sleeves that have become so worn out over the years - the revived ‘rock chick’ look is back where anything above the knee is pleasing and peachy keen. The ‘punk’ look, founded by the extraordinary lady I’m so familiar with, Vivienne Westwood has been boasting this new trend in Fall 2010 RTW. In essence, they’re delinquent, yet...

...casual but chic look perfect for day and night. Trickle up A good example on the trickle-up trend in fashion would be the “Punk Style” trend which originated with the punk subculture of England who often sported dark black leather jackets, military style combat boots, and piercings; they were a subculture based on rock music. The punk phenomenon has become a huge fashion trend amongst the upper class and is still a relevant trend as seen and referenced by many other designers to this day. But one well known and popular designer who is often credited with this is the designer Vivienne Westwood she is often cited as Punk’s creator, but the true origin of Punk is found in England’s depressed economic and sociopolitical conditions of the mid-1970s (The Metropolitan Museum of Art , Price, S., & The Costume Institute, 2004) most prominently on the youth of that generation. I think Vivienne Westwood can definitely be credited as commercializing the “Punk style” into the mainstream and that is a good example of the trickle-up trend because it shows how a designer can take a subculture’s way of dress from the streets and make it popular for the mainstream and the masses and not just popular amongst the subculture where it originated from. Trickle-up fashion trend is based on...

What Are the Advantages of Going to Westwood College

...ADVANTAGES OF ATTENDING WESTWOOD COLLEGE With the recent downturn in the nation’s economy, many businesses have downsized, relocated or just shut down. The results of this downward trend are high unemployment, and shrinking numbers in our job pools. Employers have become more selective in their hiring practices due to the high number of applicants. A job that once took only a high school diploma or GED now requires a bachelor’s degree or at the least some college coupled with experience in that specific field of work. The demand for a more educated employee has caused colleges from all over the nation to solicit individuals to become a part of their institution. One of these colleges vying for the attention of serious applicants is Westwood College. Two advantages that make Westwood the higher learning institution of choice are its fast track system to obtaining a bachelor’s degree and the commitment to Westwood alumni after graduation. Westwood has adopted a system of learning in which a student can acquire a bachelor’s degree within three years. To the student hungry for success, the appeal of gaining a bachelor’s degree in such a short period of time serves as a catalyst that drives them to graduation. This system is particularly appealing to those who are currently employed and are seeking advancement in their present field. It is equally advantageous for the student fresh out of high school seeking an edge into the job market. Westwood prides itself in getting...

Workplace Law

...Identification the legal issue/s After examining the facts and circumstances of the case, June did not breach the contractual terms and she is allowed to claim legislative protections in relation to Malcolm’s conduct. June answered to an advertisement written by Westwood University Library. She went for an interview where she met Malcolm, her immediate supervisor and get to know the company’s policy, rules and regulations. At this case, June is not considered as a staff of Westwood University because she did not sign a contract, including the social networking policy that was implemented a month before she entered the company. Relevant Legal Principles There is a distinct difference between and offer and an invitation to treat. Accepting an invitation does not come into legal bindings. An invitation to treat is a mere declaration of willingness to enter into negotiation. Advertisement usually forms no part of the employment contract and the discussion in interviews will not automatically become part of the contract. For a contract to be form, an offer must be made and stated as it was an offer, not through mode of job advertisement. Element of a contract includes offer and acceptance, intention to create legal relations, certainty, consideration, capacity and legality. It is stated in both State Legislation (Equal Opportunity Act 1984 (WA)) and federal legislations (e.g. Race Discrimination Act 1975 (Cth.)) prohibit discrimination in relation to employment. Workplace Law

...The first issue is to look at whether June is considered an employee of Westwood or an independent contractor. This can be determined using the five common law tests. Firstly, using control test in Yewens v Noakes (1880), it was held that ‘a servant is a person subject to the command of his master as to the manner in which he shall do his work’. Secondly, the integration/organisation test is an alternative test to determine if an employee is “part and parcel of the organization”. In Stevens v Brodribb Sawmilling Co Pty Ltd (1986) 63 ALR 513, courts held that the timber worker, Gray was not an employee of Brodribb but rather independent contractor due to the control test, as the degree of control was minimal. Thirdly, the business/economic reality test checks if the worker has engaged him or herself to perform the services, performing them as a person in business on his or her own account. In Market Investigations Ltd v Minister of Social Security (1969) 2 WLR 1, the court found that the extent of control exercised by the company was so extensive as to be consistent with the interviewer being engaged under a contract of service. The fourth test is the ready mixed concrete test which is a different approach to identify employment. However, this test has not generally been accepted because of the third consistency which states “the other provisions of the contract are consistent with its being a contract of service” provides no insight. Lastly the multi-factor test, in the case...

...health of the operating aspects of the business. And Westwood, Inc. was Morgan Manufacturing’s major competitor. According to the financial statements, Edward Drewery, controller of Morgan Manufacturing, stated the reason why their operations were less efficient than Westwood’s might be their different method to account for inventory. Over 2006, Morgan Manufacturing implemented significant productivity improvements over Westwood. But these improvements were not reflected in the financial statements (Exhibit 1). Morgan Manufacturing used LIFO as its inventory costing method, while Westwood used FIFO. Additionally, comparison of three key ratios indicated relative differences between these two competitors: gross margin percentage, pre-tax return on sales, and pre-tax return on assets. And calculations of these three ratios are below: Ratio | Calculation | Gross margin percentage | Gross margin/ Sales | Pre-tax return on sales | Income before tax/Sales | Pre-tax return on assets | Income before tax/ Total assets | Based on the two different methods they used to account for inventory, here is the 2006 comparison of the three ratios between Morgan Manufacturing and Westwood: Ratio | Morgan Manufacturing | Westwood, Inc. | Difference | Gross margin percentage | 44.5% | 45% | -0.5% | Pre-tax return on sales | 14.5% | 15% | -0.5% | Pre-tax return on assets | 13.4% | 13.4% | 0 | Since Westwood uses FIFO as its inventory accounting method, conversion...

The Art of How to Be Alwas Right

...of punk] [Considered one of the most unconventional and outspoken fashion designers in the world, Westwood rose to fame in the late 1970s when her early designs helped shape the look of the punk rock movement.] 1. She came from humble beginnings, working-class parents. As Vivienne would later recall, her childhood years were far from London's high life. By the early 1960s Vivienne's life seemed established, embarked on work as a teacher. Then, however, everything changed. Her first marriage dissolved and she met Malcolm McLaren, an art student and future manager of the Sex Pistols. Through her new partner, Westwood, who'd begun making jewelry on the side, was introduced to a new world of creative freedom and the power art had on the political landscape. “I latched onto Malcolm as somebody who opened doors for me," Westwood said.” 2. In 1971, McLaren opened a boutique shop at 430 Kings Road in London and started filling it with Westwood's designs. It proved to be an important fashion center for the punk movement. When McLaren became manager of the Sex Pistols, it was Westwood's designs that dressed the band and help it carve out its identity. But as the punk movement faded, Westwood was hardly content to rest on her laurels. She's constantly been ahead of the curve, not just influencing fashion, but often times dictating it. After her run with the Sex Pistols, Westwood went an entirely new direction with her Pirate collection of frilly shirts and other attire. Her styles...
