The students will have to round two-place decimal numbers to the tenths place or nearest whole number. In doing this, the student will have to focus on the ones place and the tenths place number. Some common errors include the following:
1.) Reading decimal numbers incorrectly when there are zeros as decimal place holders in the standard form. In order to eliminate the first common error, I would have the student practice by using the place value chart and align the digits with the chart.
2.) Comparing without regard to decimal place values. Incorrectly identifying decimal places when rounding. To help correct the second common error, I would have the student practice using trailing zeros (that is, append zeros so the numbers have the same place values) so you can make a true comparison of their fractional parts.
3.) Incorrectly identifying decimal places when rounding. To correct the last common error, I would have the student practice locating the correct place value to be rounded by starting with the tenths and calling/underlining the name of each place until the one being rounded is
