There are five bases of power that are divided into two separate group. The two groups are formal power and personal power. Formal power are powers that are based on one’s position in an organization. These powers include coercive, reward, and legitimate. Personal power is power that is driven by a persons individuals characteristics. The personal powers include expert power and referent power. Along with the five bases of power there is a behavior known as dependency. Dependency can be described as Person A having a relationship with Person B although Person B has something that Person A requires. Coercive power in an organization is having the ability to instill fear into someone of a lower rankings position because you can bring disciplinary actions on them. Most people in a workplace fear being fired or demoted from their position. Although negative results for Employee 1 aren’t expressed, the thought of not achieving the goal of earning a yearly bonus can impact behavior. Employee 1 knows without a great evaluation from the manager the yearly bonus will not be offered. Since the manager promotes employees to work additional hours the employee is going to do everything in his power to seem like the likely candidate for the bonus. The employee has planned to take a vacation using the money from the yearly bonu and without it the vacation will have to be cancelled. Reward power is when someone can sway another to achieve a goal in order for something to be gained. Basically this power states that a person will perform against their will to gain something that hold value to them. Reward power applies to Employee 1 as well. Seeking the bonus is a reward to the employee. Legitimate power is a power defined by someone that has higher ranking in an organization. Having this power can lead subordinates to obeying orders that are given. Even if orders are not given Employees still will take suggestions seriously. The manager of Employee 1 encourages employees to work additional hours. While this is not a direct order or mandatory for the position, Employee 1 works overtime hours because of it. Employee 2 experiences the power of their manager when his granted his the privilege to work 4 days a week. Expert power is based entirely on one’s experience or skill level. One can gain leverage in an organization depending on the importance of their skill. In the scenario Employee 2 is the only certified public accountant that the organization has. Being that he is the only CPA in his the accountant department his skills are required to complete task that only he is approved to complete. This provides the employee with leverage over other co-workers. With this leverage the employee is able to negotiated a special work schedule. Employee 2 is the only person in their department to have a special work schedule. Referent power is based on a person's influence on others. If a person is well liked, famous, or even wealthy they can easily have power over those that look up to them. We have Employee 3 who is newer to the organization than the rest of their co-workers, however Employee 3 has a positive attitude and charisma that co-workers seem to admire. The personality traits of the employee help with being the new to the company and influencing people. In many cases, newer people to organizations have a more difficult time pitching new ideas that will actually be taken into consideration. Employee 3 delivers a new sales idea for the department that gets implemented. They are also promoted to be the lead of the project. Dependency is a key component of the the bases of power. Dependency is needed in order for the bases of power to hold its validity. There are three ways to classify a dependency; importance, scarcity, and non-substitutable. Employee 3 brought a new idea to increase department sales, as a result he now is a key member of the team. Because of the great new idea Employee 3 now holds importance to the department. Scarcity based dependency is having few resources available to achieve what’s needed. In the scenario Employee 2 is the only qualified person in the accounting department who can prepare financial documents. Because of this, the employee has negotiated a four day work week schedule. And non-substitutable dependency is when a resource is limited and has either few or no replacements. Employee 1 is dominated by this kind of dependency. Employee 1 is going to work extended hours to try and obtain the recognition that he deserves in the form of the yearly bonus.
