“What Achieving a Degree Means to Me”
Reginald B. Williams

When I graduated high school in 1989, college was the last thing on my mind. I had been going to school for 13 years and I could not fathom going for another 4 years. At that time I did not think it was very important. Now that I have been out of school for almost 16 years I wish that I had made a different choice. I have been taking classes since the summer of 2000 and I am finally a junior. I never thought that I would get past my freshman year. I am going to school to obtain a degree in nursing. I truly believe that the children are our future, so when I get my degree I would love to work with children in some capacity. I believe that my personality and my dedication to make life better for other people will be a great opportunity to make a real difference many children’s lives. When I started taking classes, I was at a point in my career when I felt like I had hit a brick wall. I did not feel appreciated and I did not feel as if I was making a difference. I knew that people depended on me to do my job, but I really wasn’t happy. Today, I am still doing the same job, but I know that there is a light at the end of the tunnel and I won’t be doing this for the rest of my life. I work hard every day and do the best I can at everything I do. When I get my degree, I will be the first one in my family to achieve that goal. I know my parents and husband will be very proud of me. I strive to do my best at keeping a full time job, going to school part time, and maintaining a household with two young children. My husband is in the military, so there are many times when he is not with us.
It is difficult at times, but I know that education is one of the most important things in life, so I am determined to achieve my goals. I am very dedicated and strong willed. Starting school again

...Scholarship Essay Q&A 1) List 3-5 extra-curricular activities and tell why they are important to you. Having the experience of playing varsity sports has brought a new light on how I perceived teamwork. What does it mean to be a part of a team? Teamwork is such a vital part of our everyday lives. Without teamwork, on is not prepared to handle situations where cooperation is needed to complete a task. Teamwork and cooperation are two significant qualities that many need to have in their lives to face the daily troubles of the “real world.” Varsity tennis and basketball are two experiences that have taught me to work with others in such a way that is useful and time-efficient. Throughout high school, I have been given several opportunities to go and reach out to those in my surrounding community. Mira Mesa High School has a program called the Outreach Dinner that occurs every year right around Thanksgiving assisting and providing the homeless and less fortunate people of San Diego County with free meals, dessert, and drinks. For two consecutive years, I have participated in this event and held significant positions each time. During my first year joining the Outreach Dinner, I was the head of the waiters/waitresses and their assistants who helped set up, serve the food and drinks to homeless, and clean up the tables and disposable plates. In addition to that, we were encouraged to speak with the guests and provide hospitality. In the second year, I volunteered...

Personal Goals

...their comfort zone. As the adage says, “If you always do what you have always done, you will always get what you have always gotten.” Travelers usually begin trips by first choosing a destination. It allows them to prepare beforehand, so they know what to do upon arriving. Setting goals helps us figure out where we are going and helps us realize when we have “arrived.” Goal setting seems to be the first stop to success. Once worthwhile goals have been figured out, one can take control and shape their careers and futures to facilitate personal enhancement. Goals help set up an action plan and breaks up improbable challenges into manageable steps. My short-term professional goal is to pass the Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN) examination by the end of this year. A study conducted by the American Board of Nursing Specialties on the perceived value of nursing certifications showed that the attainment of such increases empowerment and feelings of confidence, marketability, and professional credibility (Grief, 2007). Patients view it as proof of excellence; that a nurse is competent, knowledgeable and has a certain amount of expertise. This proof of excellence leads to in increased sense of comfort and trust in the patient, and a more fulfilling patient-nurse relationship. “Nurses who are really confident in their skills do not have to act powerful, they are powerful” (Davidhizar, 1993, p.218). Short, as well as long-term goals, need to be set and achieved in a timely fashion. Time management is critical even though it may be enormous concern using the correct amount of thought goals can produce in time. Setting goals is extremely crucial for success both for short and long term goals are needed.  The definition for goals in the dictionary is: “the end toward which effort or ambition is directed.” According to http://unabridged.merriam-webster.com/unabridged/goals. First you would need to devise a plan and put the goals in place. Then using time management and personal responsibility you would achieve those goals. As an example, you would set a short-term goal like earning an associate’s degree so that you can earn a bachelor degree which would be a long-term goal. What Success Means to Me

...What Success Means to Me Being successful can be viewed in many different ways, such as being happy, having a nice house, being rich, being a good mother, or having something to make someone envy you. Many people only look at success in two ways: popularity and money. To me, success means to set a goal for myself, plan the steps to achieve it, carry through with the plan, and finally to achieve my goal. There is no better feeling than when you have finally accomplished your goal that you’ve set for yourself. My first goal is to earn my degree in my chosen profession which is Marine Science. I never really knew what I wanted to do in terms of a career. I knew what hobbies I loved, and so I decided to turn them into something that I would do for the rest of my life. The next objective that I’ve set for myself is to find the perfect job in the career field that I have chosen that is best suited for me. There’s a quote by Confucius that says “Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life” and that is what my aim is for myself. The last goal that I will accomplish is to travel someplace that I’ve never been before every year. I’ve set a few goals for myself in life, and I plan on accomplishing them all. Now that I know what my goals are in life, I have to start planning the necessary steps to achieve them. For me to accomplish my first goal in life I have to decide which University overseas could help me in earning my degree after I have completed...

...Student Survival Guide Gen/105 February 7th Student Survival Guide There are many different ways that I can be successful throughout my journey with Distant Learning. I have chosen this route because dedicating my time to a nearby college means taking away from my children’s needs. There are many people out there that don’t take the time to teach their children the basics but my almost three year knows her ABC’s, numbers to twenty, a variety of animals and can write some letters. I feel that these past nine weeks have taught me to stay motivated so I can complete my degree. It has taken some time to adapt to taking classes online but it’s always good to challenge yourself with something new. Attending classes anytime during the day seven days a week along with help from my graduation team is going to help me achieve my goals. There are advantages and disadvantages to distant learning, but what makes it so manageable is not being afraid to ask for help when needed. I can contact my instructor whether it’d be through email or picking up the telephone. One disadvantage is for the students who are used to being in a classroom setting, learning best by seeing and hearing the instructor. It may take a little while longer for these students to adapt. I feel that being able to review feedback and assignments that have been posted has been really helpful throughout these past weeks, along with discussions with the other students. Being able to discuss with other students...

Date of submission: 8/26/13 WHY COLLEGE IS IMPORTANT TO ME. College education is important to me for several reasons. These days a college degree is something that’s essential to be successful. It will provide an opportunity for a better life by earning a better salary unlike someone without a college education or degree. As said by John. F. Kennedy, “Let us think of education as the means of developing our greatest ability, because in each of us is a private hope and dream which fulfilled can be translated into benefits for everyone and greater strengths for our nation. These makes me want to strive for a better life for me and my family and for a brighter tomorrow for all. We have gone without many things we would love and enjoy today. I would love to purchase a house of my choice, drive a better car, going away for family vacations among other things. Going for a summer cruise is one of my dreams, therefore I know that once I graduate from college I can get a great paying job and start making some if not all of the dreams a reality. A college education for me would provide inspiration for my children and other members of my family that haven’t been to college. Challenges and Success in Graduate School

...Challenges and Success in Graduate School Graduate students who pursue an advanced degree will be faced with many challenges. In order for one to be successful, one must first acknowledge the challenges facing them. Obstacles from changes in health care to burnout all factor into the success or unsuccessful outcome. We as adults must recognize these challenges and implement successful solutions. Personal and Professionals Goals When I obtained my nursing degree, my intent always had been to return to school in pursuit of an advanced degree. However, I thought that I needed to gain practical experience along with a general knowledge of the industry as well as determine my areas of interest. In deciding to return to graduate studies, for the short term I want to expand my knowledge-base of the various skills, traits, and styles of effective leaders as well as return to the evidenced-based of why we do what we do. I have progressed in my career to a clinical manager; however, I have no formal leadership training or mentoring. My growth as a manager has been self-taught or mimicked after another leader I admired and I believe this program will assist me in achieving my short-term goal of solidifying a formal foundation of varying management and leadership styles to provide more effective oversight of fiscal and human resources as well as day-to-day departmental operations. For the long term, my goal is to pursue a clinical directorship with the pinnacle of obtaining a...

Why a College Education Is Important to Me

...EN1106.4 Achieving Academic Excellence Lesson 5: Write and Communicate Well August 1, 2014 For over twenty years, I have been working at dead end jobs. Most of the time, I’ve had to work two jobs at a time just to make the ends meet. A college education will change all of this enabling me to no longer struggle with working two jobs at a time. With my college education and degree, I should have a rewarding career within a few years of studying with limitless possibilities for growth. My advancement opportunities should be great, especially once I continue my college education from an Associate to a Bachelor degree. Even greater if I continue on to earn my Master’s Degree after I complete my Bachelor’s Degree. All in all, the sky is the limit and I am ready to fly. There are many reasons why a college education is important to me. A college education can open doors that has been shut and sealed tight by way of hammer and nails. What I mean is, without a college education, you are limited to certain types of jobs that you can qualify for. For instance, there is an open position for a Superintendent at my current job. In order for me to apply for this position, I must have an Associate Degree in Construction Management. This is a simple cause and effect for me. I want this career for myself so I am attending college to obtain this exact degree. I will accept nothing less. I know what I want to do and I know what salary I want to make.
